I am hoping to get your ideas. Feeling woefully unprepared. Help!

Got to admit, if I had no kids I wouldn't bother my arse. Wine and spirits maybe. As it stands I have no alcohol in, just essentials we'll use either way. Budget doesn't stretch to much fun prepping. Butter, custard and jelly is about as fun as it gets.

ValleyoftheHorses · 03/03/2019 21:52

I have only bought things I normally buy in the main.
Wine, Gin, Tonic. I have priorities!
Cat food and litter- ours only eat dry Royal Canin which we order via zoo plus from Germany so have stocked up.
Loo rolls
Toiletries and medicines- mostly otc but have spares of DS inhalers.
Cleaning products and household consumables
Food- freezer full of the usual plus frozen fruit and veg (normally only eat fresh), frozen butter and cheese and a few bread products. We have a bit of flour and self stable wraps/ crackers.
Cereal
UHT Milk but only about a weeks worth.
UHT juice
Biscuits/ chocolate
Sauces eg Nandos sauce (made in Holland)
Tins are the usual stuff we eat eg beans, tuna, chopped tomatoes, sweetcorn, chick peas.
I do have a few things I wouldn’t normally buy- tinned veg like carrots and green beans, tinned fruit, corned beef, tinned hot dogs. It is all stuff we would eat at a push though. We’d rather have a chick pea curry than a Frey Bentos pie, so none of those! Tinned veg I will use up in the slow cooker - it all goes to mush anyway.
I have 30l water which is a couple of days supply, not a long time but better than nothing. Also have a packet of water purification tablets and some squash to take the taste away.
Still to do: buy fresh stuff like onions, potatoes, cheese and butter with longish dates on
I’m growing edibles in all my pots this year rather than flowers and still need to sort that.
I really hope it’s all for nothing, if so I don’t need to shop apart from for bread, milk and eggs for a couple of months.

VanGoghsDog · 03/03/2019 21:52

I don't have a cupboard, I have two large tubs of tins in the shed and an 18 pack of looroll, plus another tub under the bed of stuff that can't be where there might be mice - so, oats and packets of stuff etc.

Then I've got a load of frozen meals which I always have anyway but have added extra frozen veg and fruit. Plus butter and cheese in the freezer.

I've also got extra painkillers and anti histamines, plus bottles of bleach.

I doubt there will be shortages but I think prices will go up. I think this will then cause disruptions in supply as food stores adjust to what people can afford.

CanILeavenowplease · 03/03/2019 21:55

My cupboards are full, my freezer is full, the bathroom cabinet is full. We will eat and be clean for a few weeks. Fingers tightly crossed minimally it will be delayed if not fogotten about altogether. Kind of a Bobby Ewing gets out of the shower moment....

DippyAvocado · 03/03/2019 21:55

Cat food - I've been buying it whenever it's on offer and have got so much I might need to eat some myself!
Tins of fruit/veg/beans/fish
Oat milk for DC
Pasta/rice/couscous
Flour/bread flour/baking powder/yeast
Sugar
Cereal
Marmite and peanut butter which my DC eat every day
Shampoo and shower gel - most stuff is imported, or at least the ingredients are
Olive oil
Need to get wine and chocolate. Ritter sport from Germany is my fave!
Dishwasher tablets and salt
Toilet roll

I have a spare freezer in my garage which isn't usually turned on but I am going to put some meat in there.

I am most worried about cheese, which I love. Apparently the more than 80% of our cheddar is from Ireland so I'm hoping it doesn't get more expensive.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 03/03/2019 21:56

Baby formula and nappies, toilet roll, baby wipes, favourite cleaning products and toiletries, OTC medications, lots of tinned fruit and veg, soups, pesto, jam, peanut butter, custard, pasta, tinned tomatoes, rice, chocolate, biscuits and lots of wine (got my priorities in order!), long life milk, cereals, tea and coffee, snacks for DC, herbs and spices. We have a second freezer in the garage so have pretty much filled it with bread and meat. Have also just gotten a years supply of my contraceptive pill which my lovely GP was more than happy for me to have.

Pocketfull · 03/03/2019 21:59

Nothing, my supplies are all in my secret underground nuclear bunker.

Seriously though, until MNers mentioned it, I never knew I needed to stock up.

BroomstickOfLove · 03/03/2019 22:01

I've got a freezer with lots of batch cooked meals - Bolognaise sauce, butter chicken, vegetable curry, jambalaya, chicken burgers, chilli and frozen fruit and veg and herbs. Also bacon, butter, some meat and grated mozzarella.

In the store cupboard is rice, pasta, instant mash, tins of fruit, tuna, sardines, mackerel, tomatoes, sweetcorn, soup, baked beans, various pulses and ratatouille. There are jars of tahini, peanut butter, jam, olives, preserved lemons, garlic, ginger and gherkins. Various condiments. Salt, sugar, yeast, flour, UHT milk. Cocoa, coffee, chocolate bars, tea. Spares for the first aid kit. Loo roll, toiletries and kitchen paper. Coffee filters.

Crunchymum · 03/03/2019 22:08

Have bought a few bits but mainly as they've been in offer (or cheap anyway)

  • pesto
  • porridge oats
  • pasta (have about 3kg in total)
  • beans
  • spaghetti hoops
  • jam
  • tuna
  • cereal (various)
  • microwave rice
  • frozen veg
  • nappies
  • sanitary towels
  • baby wipes
  • shower gel
  • baby bath

Its not actually for Brexit, it's just my current stockpile.

Want to get some more bits [loo roll, kitchen roll, washing powder and fabric softener - but will wait until it's on offer] and will make sure I get all baby's repeat scripts sorted (daily injection plus several lotions and potions for her skin!)

Crunchymum · 03/03/2019 22:09

Also tea bags and coffee.

TowandaForever · 03/03/2019 22:11

@PrawnOfCreation

Where do you get your £1 butter?

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 03/03/2019 22:15

Those saying they don't know anyone IRL who has a Brexit stockpile, you can't possibly know that. Even if you've asked all your family and friends outright (which would be quite an odd thing to do) I think a lot of people don't admit to having a Brexit Cupboard. I haven't mentioned to anyone that I have a stockpile and I think my family and friends would be surprised. If a discussion came up about it at work or something I would just keep quiet as I couldn't be arsed to defend myself against the inevitable accusations of "remainer scaremongering".

BibbityBobbityEars · 03/03/2019 22:21

My favourite brand of decaff tea
Coffee
Muesli
Beans
Beans and sausages
Tinned tomatoes
Tinned fruit
Pasta
Pesto
Sparkling water
Loo roll
Matches
Toothpaste
Flour
Yeast
Frozen peas
Frozen fruit
Peanut butter

Dorsetdays · 03/03/2019 22:34

Minister. You’re reading a bit much into it, it’s really not that deep. Hmm

No one I know has a brexit cupboard, believe me. I know that because we’re not weird enough to think it would be a problem if one of us did and, unlike you, we talk very openly about things like this. We’ve even gasp talked about Brexit itself and whether we’re remain or leave because, you know, we’re grown ups? Grin

CoastalWave · 03/03/2019 22:39

Christ, what a load of shit!!

NOTHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN! Millennium Bug anyone?!

The head of the Ports has even confirmed nothing will be held up.

VanGoghsDog · 03/03/2019 22:49

I know people in RL who have stocked up who do not read MN.

MN is not what made me decide to stock up.

I've only got a couple of months of stuff and I usually have enough for a month or so anyway. It's not a big deal, just sensible planning.

RosemarysBush · 03/03/2019 22:52

Coastal, that’s reassuring. Do you have a link please?

ChocChocButtons · 03/03/2019 22:55

No bexit cupboard, I don’t live in fear of loosing some Brie and non GM fruit.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 03/03/2019 22:57

NOTHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN!

Hopefully not, no. But on the off chance that it does then I won't have to worry about price rises or getting hold of baby formula. I've only bought stuff we would use anyway, so if everything is fine then I haven't lost anything. Just because people are stockpiling doesn't mean they're panicking, some people just like to plan for the worst and hope for the best.

ineedaknittedhat · 03/03/2019 23:05

Pasta, rice, tinned everything, biscuits, tea, coffee, painkillers, toiletries, cat food, cat medicines, laundry products.

The only thing that I'm worried about are prescription meds because you're not allowed to stockpile those. I'll be ordering scripts from the surgery soon and keeping fingers crossed. Nothing major, but they keep me going.

borntobequiet · 04/03/2019 05:13

Aaaaaargh Millennium Bug
Who is the “head of the Ports”? Is it Chris Grayling? Now that would be a worry.

bellinisurge · 04/03/2019 06:04

What do you actually eat, op?

twofingerstoEverything · 04/03/2019 06:36

NOTHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN! Millennium Bug anyone?!

BINGO!

ArmchairTraveller · 04/03/2019 06:51

My mother was rubbish at planning ahead with food, having edible stuff in the house and a bad cook.
When I got my own house, I found I’d become a person who liked full cupboards, a pantry and a freezer. 30+ years later, I’m the same.
My stores are almost exclusively things we use on a weekly basis, planning for possible Brexit inconveniences just means I’ve topped up my camping stores as well.

PumpkinJuk · 04/03/2019 06:51

I'm not specifically prepping for brexit, I just always have several months of dried/frozen type food in as we live in the sticks and grow a lot of our own but obviously can't grow frozen bits and dried stuff Grin and the nearest supermarket is ages away.
Don't buy things you don't like to eat, if you like pasta buy pasta, you don't want to be stuck with loads of stuff you don't like that you then have to use, also you can freeze things like milk, bread, eggs and cheese.
