I am hoping to get your ideas. Feeling woefully unprepared. Help!

Jam!

Hunter037 · 03/03/2019 20:22

@needthisthread

I do have a Brexit cupboard but I also agree with you re weird combinations. I have only bought stuff we would eat anyway, no tinned sprouts around here!
If you're panic buying and smash is the only thing in the shop, I'm sure the pie would be fine, but I wouldn't be planning on it!

Sibsmum · 03/03/2019 20:36

Goat milk Just seems to make DH less bloated, he says the but based ones upset his ibs, and that the oaty one was vile, so I suppose partly personal preference and partly because of his windy issues. Not life threatening like some poor souls on here without epipens. That is so awful. I am so sorry. Can we do a petition or something to help you guys!

I don't have a 'brexit' cupboard. Nor does anyone I know. They only exist in mumsnet world.

Fishcakey · 03/03/2019 20:39

Absolutely nothing. It's all Remainer scaremongering.

Dorsetdays · 03/03/2019 20:40

Another one without a Brexit cupboard and I know not one single person in RL who has one either 😂

Hunter037 · 03/03/2019 20:43

@Dorsetdays maybe they do and just haven't told you. None of my friends IRL know about my stocks, it just hasn't come up.

PrawnOfCreation · 03/03/2019 20:50

I haven't told a soul! It's just there, built up very very slowly on the advice of some of the prepper regulars. I'd rather be wrong than see my children go hungry. I hope I look like a right twat and never see brexit go bad, or my husband lose his job, or see prices rise so high I can't afford good food.

But just in case, I based my stash around fruit and veg, mostly vegetarian, things we'd miss (I love real butter - feels the price goes up every month so my freezer butter at £1 a block will save me money no matter what) and nice things for my children.

You'll never catch me at the corner shop paying £2 for 4 toilet rolls, £6 for calpol or paying over the odds for food because I'm too ill /don't want to take out poorly kids to get to the supermarket.

ShabbyAbby · 03/03/2019 20:59

@Sibsmum
It's an ongoing problem. Many people I know who have to use/keep them have out of date ones but been advised that's better than nothing. I don't know what's causing the shortage but am trying to avoid having to use epipens now, hence stockpiling the things that my family need to avoid allergic reactions and prevent them. I went to get one replaced and was told they didn't have any, so one less unfortunately. Not much choice in using them, but it's a worry that people will avoid using medicines they need because they are scared they won't be able to get more which is very worrying.

I do hope it's all panic about nothing. I used to have a fantastic stock pile (about 6 months worth of food, toiletries, about a years worth of medications etc.) but had to use a lot of it up due to financial difficulties and circumstances beyond my control and don't have the time, money or space to get a stockpile that good again. That wasn't even Brexit based, I'm just a prepperBlush
It's saved us on many occasions though. I didn't get paid one month, and although we didn't have the best diet we didn't go without either. Unfortunately I have had to use foodbanks on occasions too so I am always scared of scarcity.

ShabbyAbby · 03/03/2019 21:01

@PrawnOfCreation

They sell calpol for £6
Wtaf?!
I buy mine from Poundland, or supermarket own brand. People are being ripped off and for kids medicine? That's really sad

PrawnOfCreation · 03/03/2019 21:02

@SibsMum

These are one tablet for adults and half for children over 6. Great reviews and get the thumbs up from hay-fever suffering husband. This isn't an affiliate link, it's amazon and free delivery. 6 months worth.

PrawnOfCreation · 03/03/2019 21:05

@ShabbyAbby in the local keystore type place yes. It's the sachets they sell, branded only, if you've got poorly kids and no car are you dragging them 3 miles to town to Poundland, or up the street? Bus fare probably factors in too. It's not fair, but everything is more expensive in the little shops.

I always have a few bottles in, obviously being careful of storage.

Sibsmum · 03/03/2019 21:14

Thanks Prawn. Abby I really hope things get easier for you soon xxx

I've got tins galore. Probably around 25-30 tins of beans, 20-25 tins of chopped tomatoes, 10 tins of tuna, 5 tins of Mac n cheese, 10 tins of soup, 5 tins of ravioli, 8kg pasta, 8kg rice, 10 packets of pasta n sauce, several tins of stew, a few tins of curry, around 8 tins of sweet corn and 4 peas. I've also got 4 jars of coffee, a huge box of tea, 3 custards, fajita sets, loads of spices, sauces, jars of curry sauce, 5 packs of 5 instant noodles, only 24 toilet rolls (need more), 4 tooth pastes for us and 2 for DS, extra shampoo and conditioner, body wash and tampons (although I want a mooncup...) Deodorant. In the freezer I've got loads of frozen chicken and mince, 4 bags of frozen vegetables, frozen fish, frozen pizza, frozen burgers, fish fingers, strudel, a few meals we've made a frozen, different types of potatoes etc.
I've also bought packets of tomato seeds, cabbage seeds, courgette seeds, coriander, thyme, mint, basil, and something else but I can't remember what. We've got an ecoegg for washing clothes, and a hydrogarden for growing herbs. I've also (only because I got into it) bought sets of clothes for DS for the summer and a nice winter coat for next year. We've also got plenty of blankets and hot water bottles if push comes to shove. Just to save money I mean on things like heating. I tried to buy boardgames but DH drew the line.

All that being said, I suffer from anxiety quite badly, I see death around every corner and even contemplated selling our house to avoid being in a position where I can't afford to pay the mortgage.

Steamedbadger · 03/03/2019 21:22

Nothing, but I do have a lot of gin in the house.

IDoN0tCare · 03/03/2019 21:24

OP, don’t be put off by the usual crowd, that insist that they’ve no interest in prepping while at the same time, coming on these threads to try to goad, on topic that they, apparently ‘have no interest in’. Confused

needthisthread · 03/03/2019 21:28

This is AIBU though, not preppers, so I think it's fair enough.

Anyway, I am totally interested to know why people are stocking up on absolute shite.

bebeboeuf · 03/03/2019 21:32

We don't have much at the moment. A bit of long life milk (isn't our milk produced in England though?!)

Nothing much else.

ShabbyAbby · 03/03/2019 21:34

@PrawnOfCreation of course not which is why I think it's terrible it's not cheap everywhere
I always have it in, thankfully. But my kids have really scary temperatures (over 40) a lot and I think they'd be pretty pissed off in an ambulance/A&E if my DCs had to go in but hadn't even given paracetamol

scaryteacher · 03/03/2019 21:35

I have a huge cupboard stuffed full of things that I have to eat before we come back to the UK for good in October. That said, a friend and I are doing a quick trip back to the UK to ensure our supplies of cheddar, peanut butter, tea bags, custard creams and squash are enough to see us through til the dust settles.

ShabbyAbby · 03/03/2019 21:35

Thanks @Sibsmum

Dorsetdays · 03/03/2019 21:35

Hunter. No, I know they don’t have a cupboard as we’ve been talking about it quite a bit recently with friends/family and with colleagues.

IrenetheQuaint · 03/03/2019 21:40

Coffee, loo roll, oats and sloe gin.

Eek re UHT goats' milk!

PinkiOcelot · 03/03/2019 21:41

I could live on my fat for weeks so I’m not worried.

areyoureallysaying · 03/03/2019 21:44

Nada, there is no such cupboard in this house I reckon if it all goes tits up I'll finally be thin
