Hamilton -expensive show and enjoyment spoilt by uncomfortable seats.

Royal circle £325 for myself and 2 daughters. Seats cut into my thigh. Barely room for my feet and knees . No arm rests. The show is quite long and no way will I to go back and see it again at this theatre. Shame, it was a brilliant show. Really disappointed - any one have this experience?

Actually The Victoria Palace wS pretty much rebuilt from the inside with only the facade retained. The producers chose the theatre due to the size of the stage and backstage area. It was one of the few West End theatres that could accommodate the full scale production (tours are often scaled down)

I sat in the stalls and had no issues but the poor seating and keg room in the circle and grand circle was purely a financial decision by Cameron Mackintosh to pack the maximum number of seats in. I saw Billy Elliot there twice (once in the circle and once in the stalls) and the circle leg room was fine before the refurb for us including my 6ft dad.

PurpleFlower1983 · 03/03/2019 16:51

We saw it this time last year, stalls tickets £200 each ‘premium’ seats. No rake and really high stage meant view from centre stalls was obstructed. Amazing show but really pissed off. The theatre/Delfont Macintosh didn’t care.

MrsChollySawcutt · 03/03/2019 17:08

@anniehm where did you sit for Waitress? Have stalls seats booked for a couple of weeks time and worried now that we will be cramped and uncomfortable as we are all tall!

bruffin · 03/03/2019 17:23

Purple flowers
I sat in row c stalkd and view was great and they are the cheaper seats. DS has sat in R, and C x 2 has no problem.
Dd did the box and had a problem with a pony tail from the girl in the box in front.
Ds is 6ft , his girl friend and I are 5,2 .
We got back of stalls for Dear Evan Hansen. I'm a bit worried about them

We have seen Hamilton in a range of different seats, including front row and centre. In my opinion, always absolutely fantastic and worth the money (and not too long...), but the world would be a boring place if we all thought the same!

Now Cursed Child, those seats WERE
tiny and uncomfortable, and it was a bit like watching ants, but still very enjoyable overall.

PurpleFlower1983 · 03/03/2019 17:51

bruffin My DH works in theatre so we were limited to one particular rare Saturday night that we knew we had off. We never pay premium but we wanted to make sure we had a good view for this one as it was so hyped etc. We were row D and in ‘premium seats’ I would have expected a full view of all the stage. Pic attached shows what we had.

I know it doesn’t look that bad but I really think that stage is too high to justify a £200 ticket for that view.

It just annoys me that the seats in front were £89. My DH bought them on day 1 when they went on sale and had good £89 seats in his basket 4 times before the system crashing. I just disagree with the whole premium pricing thing anyway, it’s extortionate.

whiteroseredrose · 03/03/2019 18:01

Just posted on another thread. Had £37.50 tickets for very back row of top tier. View was fine as were the seats. I'm 5'7 and size 16. DH and DS are 6'0. No problem for any of us.

SoftPlant · 03/03/2019 18:02

Purpleflower I fail to see how that isn't a full view of the stage Confused

When we were front row the only thing that was cut off was the actors feet. In row D... What couldn't you see?

Comefromaway · 03/03/2019 18:03

That annoyed me too. We couldn’t sit high up because of dh’s vertigo but the system kept crashing. That’s why I’ve now paid for membership so I got my Dear Evan Hansen the row behind the premium seats in the circle in 10 mins from start to finish.

Comefromaway · 03/03/2019 18:03

You couldn’t see the lighting effects on the floor of the stage but that was all for us.

bruffin · 03/03/2019 18:04

Nor can I Softplant

Teapot1984 · 03/03/2019 18:13

We went a few weeks ago sat on the top tier of seating 3 rows from the back, the seats were cramped but we managed,I think most of these Victoria theatres are the same tbh.

JustDanceAddict · 03/03/2019 18:16

Eek re HP - we are going to see it in the cheap seats and dh & ds are 6ft!! That’ll be fun for them...
I can’t remdmber the Hamilton seats being uncomfy but it was v hot in there...

GlitterNails · 03/03/2019 18:17

I had a box (one of the disabled access ones at the back) and was really impressed with the service. The butler made a huge difference as trying to get through the people in a wheelchair to get a drink is usually a nightmare. The one flaw was the single disabled toilet which had a large queue at both the interval and after it ended.

We couldn’t see the upper part of the stage at all but I absolutely loved it and am going back this month so it didn’t impact it too much.

MajesticWhine · 03/03/2019 18:42

I am going to watch Hamilton at £100 per ticket to sit almost at the back of the royal circle. I am not particularly large and have short stubby legs so I hope it will be ok.

PurpleFlower1983 · 03/03/2019 22:44

SoftPlant No rake at that point in the stalls means that the view is obstructed by the people in front and you couldn’t see the actor’s feet. I know the view isn’t ‘bad’ but Hamilton is guilty of making loads of seats ‘Premium’ that are really just what should be considered full price. For £200 per ticket (now £250) I would expect a complete view of the stage with a decent rake, just like premium tickets at all others shows.

cardibach · 03/03/2019 22:52

This refurbishment has just copied the airline industry by trying to cram as many seats in as possible
No, if you read about the refurbishment Cameron Mackintosh managed to increase seat size and leg room everywhere except the Grand Circle which has a very steep rake so it’s impossible to increase leg room there. The seats are wider than the old ones. It’s the only thing about the refurbishment he’s not happy with.
I’m 5’10” and overweight and, while leg room was an issue, I wasn’t any more uncomfortable than anywhere else.

cardibach · 03/03/2019 22:54

As an aside, I think Hamilton is more enjoyable from a higher perspective like the Grand Circle as the dancers make interesting patterns and the staging is clever in a way I’m not sure you would see from lower down.

Loopytiles · 21/03/2019 07:50

Saw Hamilton recently - am a big fan - and agree that for the prices the seating/views could be better. Sat at back of stalls £125 a ticket.

View not bad, but a tall man sat in front of me so was tilting round to see past him the whole time. Did feel cramped, I’m 5’6.

As PPs say it’s v obvious that Cameron Mackintosh has crammed in as many seats as possible, to maximise profits.

Also agree with PP that some of the impact of the choreography might be better seen from above.

Loopytiles · 21/03/2019 07:51

Strongly disagree cardibach - the sizes may be bigger than the original 1900s seats - but other theatres have different designs providing more “staggering” and incline to improve room/view. But that would mean fewer seats.

Ihavealwaysknown · 21/03/2019 08:10

Off to See Hamilton in a few weeks in the stalls so will be interesting to see how we get on!

@Underpressureidiot how did you find come from away? My Canadian friends rave about it!
