AIBU to think that Fathers don't love their sons more than their daughters?

A friend says her husband is adamant that a Father will never love a daughter as much as he loves a son. (They have two boys and a third child of unknown sex on the way) AIBU to think that though this may be true of some men(including her husband) but that it isn't true of the vast majority? She seems to think that it's true of most men.

I call BS.

BackforGood · 01/03/2019 13:37

She is talking rubbish.

PickledLimes · 01/03/2019 13:39

Personally I think he's a dick, I'm not especially fond of him, but I also think that he'll change his mind if his third is a daughter.

Does that mean mums love their daughters more? She sounds like a bit of tit who is trying to make people with daughters feel shit

Singlenotsingle · 01/03/2019 13:40

Oh ffs! My DS loves his son but he adores his daughter!

Jellyonawonkyplate · 01/03/2019 13:42

It's taboo but I do think most men want at least one son.

Jellyonawonkyplate · 01/03/2019 13:42

Whether they admit it is another matter though.

DiscontinuedModelHusband · 01/03/2019 13:43

i love DD15 just as much as DS13 and DS9.

they're all very different, and our relationships are very different, but i want the same happiness for all of them (and strive equally to achieve the same for each)

fulltimeworkingmotherof4 · 01/03/2019 13:44

Dads and their daughters have a special bond I think, different from that to their sons but I don't think they love them any different

happierever · 01/03/2019 13:44

I don't think they love them more they just have more in common. My DP looks football my son plays and they support the same team so it's shared interests. He is less enthused about the gymnastics competition

MarshaBradyo · 01/03/2019 13:45

No way is that true

Catinthetwat · 01/03/2019 13:46

What an awful sentiment. It's only true of people who don't actually love their children for who they are, rather for some superficial characteristic or perceived shared interest.

Condoning this treatment of children is unbelievable, it's emotionally abusive. Although, I've definitely seen this in action, so I know it happens.

MeetMeInMontauk · 01/03/2019 13:46

Top marks to OP's friend for perpetuating the toxic masculinity narrative, though.

2rachtin · 01/03/2019 13:48

@Jellyonawonkyplate it's one thing wanting a particular sex but another think loving them more because of it!

I don't think it's at all true.

Bleurghthatisall · 01/03/2019 13:50

My husband really wanted a son but got 3 daughters instead Grin that’s life. He’s happy and they are as adored (and spoilt) as any children could be.

Catinthetwat · 01/03/2019 13:50

This is so sad though, because it isn't about him. What he likes should be totally irrelevant, because he's there to watch his child.

Completely agree. DH is head over heels in love with our DDs (and they him - very much Daddy's girls) but I think he would have liked a son. He would never admit it though.

Toooldtocareanymore · 01/03/2019 13:56

yet we constantly hear the term a daddy's girl, to describe a dad and dd having a very close and cosseted relationship, not so much a mummy's boy being used in a positive way. Of course her husband hasn't a clue what he's talking about -he's got no daughters, and your friend is presumably reflecting her fathers relationship he had with her.

Angelicinnocent · 01/03/2019 13:57

Disagree, DH has more in common with DS and loves him totally but DD is his baby girl and has him wrapped around her little finger. He adores her.

In my experience, this is true only of men who are obsessed with watching and/or playing sport, usually football.

Jellyonawonkyplate · 01/03/2019 14:04

In some cases maybe but my opinion is that they have more of a need for a 'mini-me' more than women do, regardless of whether they play/like sport or not.

oldfatgreycat · 01/03/2019 14:04

I assumed it may be the other way round tbh.

KidLorneRoll · 01/03/2019 14:04

Bullshit, obviously.

StinkyCandle · 01/03/2019 14:05

you most love the child that is currently the least annoying, it's not gender related.

MaxNormal · 01/03/2019 14:06

Not in my personal experience. My dad adored me. And my brothers. Never felt that there was a favourite.
