Gifts for a new first time mum

SiL had baby yesterday. Beautiful little girl, is at home now and mum and baby are both doing well.
I've bought loads of stuff over the course of her pregnancy and we are going to visit this evening.
She has everything she needs for baby (and more!) and I'm sure people will continue to buy stuff.

I didn't want to buy more baby stuff, so was considering getting something for SiL as I feel new mums deserve a treat just as much as baby.

I was thinking of doing a "goody bag" with some nice hot chocolate, snacks and stuff she likes, and some nice bath stuff.
What else could I get her? Any ideas welcome!

Lovely idea! I’m going to have a similar situation in a few weeks and I’m going to do a little M&S food shop with some of her favourite foods, ready meals that will be easy for her and her partner to cook. Anything that takes the stress out of the first few weeks is good

Spiderbanana · 01/03/2019 13:00

Best gifts I got were bath salts which helped soothe the stitches, meals which I just had to reheat, biscuits for the energy, nice squash and juice to make hydration easier.

Babies get all the stuff. Presents for the mum are the best

Whitelisbon · 01/03/2019 13:00

Insulated travel mug.
Hand cream.

PeachPotato · 01/03/2019 13:01

Presliced fruit and a reusable coffee mug

ethelfleda · 01/03/2019 13:02

We had a hamper delivered from an overseas relative with wine and cheese and nice things like that.
Also - especially if breastfeeding - food and lots of it!!

Patr1ckJane · 01/03/2019 13:04

I got a travel cup to help her stay hydrated during feeding (I styfed managing newborn and a drink) chocolates, scented candle, some nice body stuff, fluffy slipper socks

Readytogogogo · 01/03/2019 13:09

Contigo mugs are the best as drip free. Silk eye mask. Ear plugs (for when someone else is looking after baby). Some fancy teas. Slipper socks. Lots of food esp hearty home made meals e g stews. A few novels and magazines.

hellsbellsmelons · 01/03/2019 13:09

Definitely an insulated travel mug with a lid.
She can have a hot drink whilst feeding baby and not worry about scalding.
And it can stay hot for far longer as you often get caught up doing other things and forget about your tea or coffee.

THIS THREAD might give you some ideas as well.

Someone got me perfume which was lovely. But can be very personal unless you know what she actually wears.
Nice slippers?
Lounge wear!

Aside from the practical things, i recently got a friend a necklace with babies birthstone on it. She was really happy with it. Not sure where you'd get one at short notice though.

pushingdaisies · 01/03/2019 13:17

Thank you all!

And thank you @hellsbellsmelons for the link to the other thread

I was thinking of other things like pyjamas (she loves cosy pyjamas so that would be well received), ear plugs are definitely a good idea.
Nice juice is a good idea, I have juice drops that you add to water that I take to work so could get some like that for convenience

I've definitely got some good ideas so thank you all Flowers

Pandora do loads of birthstone jewellery.

Darkstar4855 · 01/03/2019 13:27

Lavender pillow spray for those precious naps, nice lip balm and “The New Mum’s Guide to Self Care”. Also Lasinoh cream if breastfeeding.

olivesnutsandcheese · 01/03/2019 13:31

Nice hand cream and nice non-drying soap for the frequent handwashing. M&S chocolate flapjacks Smile

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/03/2019 13:35

Nice pashmina
Perfume
Body lotion
Voucher for beauty salon

Congratulations on your new niece ❤️

2childrenandout · 01/03/2019 13:35

Someone bought us a bag full of Marks and Spencer ready meals- was by far the best present we received!

Parkinssheet · 01/03/2019 13:37

I've just bought a new mum in my family a voucher for a baby photo session and framed picture. I had my DC photographed professionally when they were about 6 months and I still, many many years on, look at the pictures every day and they make me smile, even when DC are being horrid.

sirmione16 · 01/03/2019 13:37

A flask! I have a 5 week old, and when feeding him I don't want to hold a hot cup of tea over him, but a flask with a closeable nossle is safe and keeps it warm for longer as tea always goes cold by the time I'm done changing and feeding baby

Pixie2015 · 01/03/2019 13:39

A lovely big Easter egg for indulgence - don’t get anything she’ll need to sort out or put away x

Orangedaisy · 01/03/2019 13:46

I don’t agree that bath stuff is a good idea-it sat on the shelf looking at me and taunting me that I never got enough time to have a proper soak.

Handcream, handsoap and shampoo much more practical. And food, definitely food. Someone brought me some of those ridiculous cupcakes with Oreos sticking out the top and about 4 inches of buttercream. 5 years on and I still drool at the thought of them.

katmarie · 01/03/2019 13:50

Snacks snacks and more snacks
A subscription to audible
Warm fluffy socks
Good quality hand cream
Lansinoh if she's breastfeeding
A good book/fave magazine
Do the washing up and tidy the kitchen
Freezer meals.

Spiderbanana · 01/03/2019 13:54

@Orangedaisy that is so sad!

After my first, I had a bath every morning as soon as he was asleep. DH worked from home so could grab him if needed and I had a good hour long soak every morning. Saved my sanity!

StBernard · 01/03/2019 13:57

How about some of those super thick fleecy sock/slipper hybrids? They call them reading socks here. Nothing worse than cold feet while feeding/pacing with baby :-) I would also take some nice biscuits and a travel mug.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 01/03/2019 13:57

Best present I received was about a months worth of ready meals from COOK.

Honestly, ready meals are the bomb when you’re a FTM in the fog of new babydom.

HJWT · 01/03/2019 13:58

Home bargains have insulated cups and bottles £5.99 copies of the chilly ones for £20, they are brilliant for helping with water intake, also keeps drinks hot/cold which you need with baby! 😁

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 01/03/2019 14:01

A good travel mug that locks and doesn't spill, contigo are brilliant (and on offer in Tesco last week not sure if they still are). Hand cream, nice bath oils, an offer to come round and run a Hoover round, do some laundry, make her lunch etc while she has a nap. I've never valued sleep so much....
