Is this usual with baked potatoes?

DC went to MIL's and had the most amazing baked potatoes and not they want them the same.

It's a right faff. First potatoes need baked then you scoop put the potato and mash it. (at the same time you put the skins back in the oven to crisp them). You mask it with butter and cheese and then take the skins out and scoop it back in...and then grate cheese on top and bake it again.

I am so fed up doing this and it is all they want to eat now. Argh. Do others do this for baked potatoes also as DH says they have always had them like this.

Stuffed potatoes, love them here. Mix the mash with some other veg and top with cheese. Totally worth the faff and even better as the kids can get involved.

PeterPiperPickedWrong · 27/02/2019 18:39

Cheese stuffed baked potatoes- a faff but delicious, especially when the top is really brown. Even more delicious with crispy bacon mixed through before going back in the oven. Calorific though.
Personally I don’t add butter, there is enough fat in the cheese.

ATowelAndAPotato · 27/02/2019 18:39

Could you microwave them to start with so they are cooked quickly, then scrape/mash/re-stuff, then whack them under the grill/or in oven to crisp at the end?
Might be a midweek compromise and then proper way at the weekend?

Grumpbum123 · 27/02/2019 18:41

Nice with onions cooked with some corned beef then all mashed together with the potato then back in oven with cheese

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/02/2019 18:42

It's only an extra 10 minutes work and they are so much nicer done like this. Possible lunch tomorrow for me Smile

recrudescence · 27/02/2019 18:43

You should have claimed that they were some sort of magic that only granny could perform.

TeacupDrama · 27/02/2019 18:45

could you compromise like at MIL's when baked potatoes are main bit of meal but if accompanying something else just normal

havingtochangeusernameagain · 27/02/2019 18:46

I'm with you OP - least work possible! They go into the oven for however long it takes to cook, cut in half, add butter/filling.

Except that ds and dh don't like them so I only ever do them, rarely, for me.

ApplesinmyPocket · 27/02/2019 18:47

My mother-in-law used to do this - bake, scoop, mash with butter and half a teaspoon or so of marmite - sounds weird but it works - top with grated cheese and back under a hot grill.

They really are tasty and definitely a meal in themselves.

Quintella · 27/02/2019 18:48

Sounds ridiculously faffy.

Could you please make one for me. Cos I want one so bad.

NameChanger22 · 27/02/2019 18:49

We call them magic potatoes, but we add spring onion and sour cream to the potato mix.

teainthemorning · 27/02/2019 18:51

Also good with a spoon of Branstons or similar pickle mashed in with the butter and cheese. Cheese and pickle baked spuds. Scrumptious.

Steamedbadger · 27/02/2019 18:52

So yummy and not that much faff

friendlyflicka · 27/02/2019 18:52

I do those. And best of all, with smoked haddock and cream, or salmon and cream cheese and chives. Labour intensive for a baked potato but not for a meal.

Fiveredbricks · 27/02/2019 18:54

Get a systema microwave steamer.

Steam for 12 mins.
Bake for 10 to get crisp.
Scoop and refill and stick back under the grill for 5 mins.
Boom.

Pimmsypimms · 27/02/2019 18:55

Ooh, I always make these when we have bbqs but I add spring onions and bacon in to the mash, they are divine! Batch cook a load and then freeze them.

Sweetbabycheezits · 27/02/2019 18:56

I double bake mine, but only on Christmas Eve! They are a faff...but definitely our fave treat. I add bacon and onion, as well. Never would I do them for anything but a holiday, though...way too much work to be a regular thing!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 27/02/2019 18:56

These are really nice if you add crispy bacon lardons to the potato, butter and cheese mix.

I might make them next week....

Siriismyonlyfriend · 27/02/2019 19:01

I’ve never heard of this but it sounds delicious so I’m going to have to try it.
I’ve given up on the frozen ones, they’re always a grey colour and not very nice

cherish123 · 27/02/2019 19:02

I once had this in a gallery cafe. It was called a "Murphy".

DarlingNikita · 27/02/2019 19:04

Bollocks to that.

In my house they get shown a scrubbing brush, scored on top and then chucked in the oven. Take out about an hour later, bash firmly with a fist, stick in a bowl and add cheese/butter/salt/pepper/tuna/chilli/all of the above. Easy.

onthenaughtystepagain · 27/02/2019 19:06

Bonfire night specials! No matter how many I do there are never any leftovers. Smokey bacon and lots of onions mashed in is delicious.

onthenaughtystepagain · 27/02/2019 19:08

Brush the empty skins with olive oil before putting them back into the hot oven to go crispy, it means they can be held without collapsing.

UrsulaPandress · 27/02/2019 19:09

Do these all the time. In the Aga.

WeCameToDance · 27/02/2019 19:10

These sound delicious but how do you scoop the inside out without breaking the potato skin?
