Jubilee Line 0730

cantbeb0thered · 26/02/2019 10:03

I am starting a new job on Monday morning and I have to be there early. I have a couple of route options. One is the 26 bus from Waterloo to shoreditch and the other is the jubilee line and then either northern line to old street or the overground to shoreditch. I don't work in London at the moment and I don't live in London.

How busy is the jubilee line at 0730? Is that early enough that I will miss the rush hour? Or should I stick to the bus??? I can't really do a dummy run.

My commute gets me to Waterloo at 7:30 and I get on the jubilee from there, I don’t always get a seat but I very rarely have to wait for a second train, it doesn’t get crazy busy until about 8, I reckon you should be fine. The jubilee is fast and has trains every 2 minutes or so at that time of day. Good luck!

user1471592953 · 26/02/2019 10:17

Where will you be commuting from on the Jubilee line, OP?

Sparklesocks · 26/02/2019 10:19

It’s not normally too bad at that time but it depends which stations you need too, if you’re changing to northern does that mean you’re changing at London Bridge?

user1471592953 · 26/02/2019 10:19

Sorry - just reread your post. I can’t help with a Waterloo start point so will leave others to assist.

NakedAvenger · 26/02/2019 10:25

You'll be fine at that time. I regularly was there at 8 to 8.30 which is peak rush hour and although I often had to wait for three trains to go but given they arrive every 2 to 3 mins the total wait was never more than 5-10 mins. I also did northern line too around same time. Again, no real issues except a squeeze sometimes.

CallMeSirShotsFired · 26/02/2019 10:29

Check Google maps and apps like Walkit to see if you can do a better job on foot - or at least reduce some changes and up and down into the tube network.

You may be pleasantly surprised at the proximity of many places.

NakedAvenger · 26/02/2019 10:30

Sorry was also meant to say the bus is more volatile. Slightest jam or rain could have you in major trouble. Use bus as alternative option if tube is down (rare). Also your bus is going to fighting it's way around Holborn and over Waterloo Bridge in the morning. I wouldn't be trusting that.

Vinorosso74 · 26/02/2019 10:33

You could also get the Waterloo and City line and change to Northern Line at Bank. I'm not sure which is the easier interchange. The tube tends to get busier after 8 so it shouldn't be cramped.
Personally I prefer travelling on buses as it's easier to get off when there's delays and cheaper.
I would try different routes and see what works best. The best route in the morning may not be the same as the evening.

NakedAvenger · 26/02/2019 10:35

Walking will take an hour. Tube takes 24 minutes. Fine for some. I'd prefer an extra 40 minutes in bed frankly.

HighlyUnlikely · 26/02/2019 10:40

Now, I don’t know if this still happens on the Jubilee from Waterloo, but there used to be a ‘queuing in line’ etiquette on the platform during rush hour. I didn’t know this and was physically grabbed and pushed out of the way when I tried to just get on as normal! I’d have thought at 7.30, it wouldn’t be too bad though. Good luck!

MRex · 26/02/2019 10:40

Definitely the tube, it's not too bad at that time of the morning, gets worse later but it's still frequent enough to be much faster than the bus. 15-20 min rather than 30-60 min. Bus routes can be unpredictable in the mornings.

If you get stuck getting on the northern line at London Bridge take the 141 from the start of the bridge, it'll take 20-30 min but it keeps you moving.

I didn't mean OP has to walk the whole way!
There is often a way to get off at a convenient line change or something along the route, given how the Tube map is so tricksy when it comes to actual distances between stations!

GlossyTaco · 26/02/2019 10:42

It's fine at 7:30. I always found that I needed to be on the train by 7:45 to avoid the rush.

cantbeb0thered · 26/02/2019 10:47

Thanks everyone. I am coming from the south about an hour on the train. I have never had to commute for work before so all new to me. I took the bus from Waterloo to the interview which was fine. I think I will take be jubilee line either to London Bridge or Canada Water and then ether tube to old street or overland to shoreditch station.

@cantbeb0thered - when I moved to a new area I checked all the routes from Waterloo. What I forgot to check were the contingencies when a tree fell on the overground line near here while I was at the station on the first day I was going to work! There are 4 other options for a bus to catch a train on a different line, so I was stood like a wally checking every route timing before I went to catch a bus and had then missed several, the trains were rammed once I got to the next station etc etc. Don't be me, check out those contingency routes now too.

TheFlis12345 · 26/02/2019 10:59

Definitely the tube route, the bus will be very slow. And as a previous poster mentioned, there is an etiquette on the Jubilee line that you don’t really have on any other line, people queue in order either side of the doors and woe betide anyone who just wanders and stands in the middle.

MRex · 26/02/2019 11:00

I mean to 4 different train lines on different buses, I wasn't standing comparing route times for 4 buses from the same stop (though to one trainline one bus takes twice as long as another, I later found out).

bedunkalilt · 26/02/2019 11:04

In terms of just pleasantness, I would go Overground to Shoreditch and just use the Northern Line as back up if the Overground is ever severely delayed/suspended etc. Overground is a much more spacious train, and air conditioned in summer, and just generally nicer than being on the Northern Line!

Saying that on the basis that it sounds like there isn’t much difference for you between taking the Northern or the Overground to get to your workplace.

Also as others have said, 7:30am Jubilee will be active but it isn’t normally sardine territory at that point - generally busy in that most seats may be taken and maybe some people standing, rather than full on packed.

cantbeb0thered · 26/02/2019 11:07

This is all good news. I had read horror stories about the jubilee line in the morning. I am going to try and get in for 0730 most mornings and then once settled work from home a few days a week

Londonmummy66 · 26/02/2019 11:07

Its only a mile from Bank to Old Street so 20 min walk max so you might want to consider the Waterloo and City Line to Bank and to walk from there.

ShastaBeast · 26/02/2019 11:11

Your biggest issue will be the train into/out of Waterloo. The tubes are very reliable and there’s always a few alternative routes. However if the trains are screwed you won’t have many options.

Recently southwest trains have been very reliable and hopefully southern has improved too.

reallyanotherone · 26/02/2019 11:18

Rather than travel into waterloo and out again, have you looked at getting a train that links into somewhere like croydon, crystal palace or new cross, or clapham junction? Then you can overground straight round to shoreditch and miss out central london.

I’m not so familiar with it but have you looked at Thameslink straight up to farringdon or kings cross?

cantbeb0thered · 26/02/2019 11:35

#reallyanotherone I hadn't thought if that. I will have a look into it

Amibeingnaive · 27/02/2019 16:31

If it gets overcrowded there can be a massive queue to get down to the jubilee line that goes outside Waterloo station because they shut the main entrance to the tube.

However the 26 bus can be SLOW going up Fleet Street so that's probably worse on balance, I think.

girlwithadragontattoo · 27/02/2019 16:56

Hi OP, i used to get the jubilee line from Waterloo to Canary Wharf every day around 7:45ish. It's busy and you probably won't get a seat, but they are every other minute so I'd say you'll be fine
