Should we be buying air conditioning units in preparation for the a 40c summer?

It was 25c in my car earlier.

I put the air con on in FEBRUARY!

Anyone else slightly freaked out?

OP posts:
RiverTam · 26/02/2019 12:59

it really doesn't.

Tippexy · 26/02/2019 13:01

Does anyone remember the ice age? The planet has been around a lot longer than we have and it is actually quite ridiculous of us to think we can somehow influence things!

Hotterthanahotthing · 26/02/2019 13:03

It might be warm in the day but I was scraping frost off my windscreen this morning.
Make the most of it,this maybe it for the years warm weather.I rains in a few days.

Tippexy · 26/02/2019 13:03

22 years ago it snowed in May.

PortiaCastis · 26/02/2019 13:08

I can't hang my laundry out because the gulls shit all over it so from that point of view doesn't matter if the sun shines or not

lubeybooby · 26/02/2019 13:16

interesting post I found on it yesterday, well it was a whole thread which I won't copy but the gist was that climate change means greater extremes of cold, heat, wind and flooding and that mini events like this aren't necessarily a direct indication EG the position of the jet stream is causing this right now, I believe el nino and la nina years also affect our weather somewhat

one of the posts... "Just a note that while global climate change is very real, and a massive problem now and more so in the future, there are natural fluctuations that cause/ contribute to this kind of thing. My worry is that if the advocates for the universal recognition of man-made climate change as the enormous disaster that it is, get too attached to this kind of "mini-heatwave" as our evidence, then the next time we experience a longer cold-snap, we'll get even more of the "WhErE's yOuR gLoBaL wArMiNg gOt to nOw tReEhUgGeRs?" shtick

In fact there is evidence that climate change may actually cause a mini ice-age in the UK due to a weakening of the gulf stream.

Don't use this to convince people of man-made climate change, because there's a lot more to it and you'll be weakening your position"

bastards Angry

GregoryPeckingDuck · 26/02/2019 13:45

That’s not how it works. Where I come from this would be extremely cold even for winter and our summers are regularly in the 40s but in other places where temperatures go all the way up to fifties they have snowy winters. Just enjoy the warm weather while it lasts.

RiverTam · 26/02/2019 13:45

DH wants to live by the sea but the bastard gulls are one of the very real reasons I don't want to.

PortiaCastis · 26/02/2019 13:55

Wish folk would stop feeding the fuckers though River Tam but in general as I've always lived here I'm so used to the noise they make I don't take much notice unless I do happen to put something out on the line and it gets guanoed

AngelsWithSilverWings · 26/02/2019 14:02

We had a frost this morning and now I'm sunbathing in a summer dress!

My Facebook memory thing did flag up a photo of my son in a t shirt on the beach from this day in 2012 - don't remember much about summer 2012 other than the Olympics - don't think it was a very hot summer though.

shakeapoo · 26/02/2019 14:21

What @Tippexy ???! 'Ridiculous to think we can influence things' really??? FFS

Tippexy · 26/02/2019 14:40

Why FFS? It is faintly ridiculous to think that the planet, which has been doing just fine for millennia, going through hot and cold phases, doesn't know what it's doing! It's a bit "God complex" of humans to think that we know better than nature!

Skyejuly · 26/02/2019 14:55

I live by the sea. Usually stuff gets pooed on every couple of days lol

Whathappenedtothelego · 26/02/2019 15:03

Hate to tell you this Tippexy, but the planet and "nature" aren't actually sentient beings with a grand master-plan for saving the day.

And the argument that "some things happen naturally, therefore it's fine if I make those things happen" is ridiculous. It's like running a load of people over in your car, and then saying "but all people die eventually, it's natural, what's the difference?"

MrsTerryPratcett · 26/02/2019 15:10

It is faintly ridiculous to think that the planet, which has been doing just fine for millennia, going through hot and cold phases, doesn't know what it's doing!

The planet will carry on. Humans could suffer famine, we could wipe out even more species, seas could rise further and drown our cities. But you're right, the planet (and billions of animals) will be fine.

Fuck us and the polar bears. I mean unless you care about us and the polar bears...

derxa · 26/02/2019 15:57

Long may it continue.

Dodie66 · 26/02/2019 16:51

We have had hotter weather in the past. In the Middle Ages it was warmer and they grew grapes in the north of England. If you do a bit of research online you will see that the weather goes through cycles of hotter and colder and that there was a mini ice age. You wait and see we will. Have colder weather soon. I agree with the poster who said why does man think he can control the climate. Saw this phot on FB today 🙂

So should we be worried, re: unusually warm weather?
shakeapoo · 26/02/2019 19:26

@Tippexy - We are changing the climate, destroying ecosystems and wiping out species. Our way of living is not sustainable. If we continue as we are there will be catastrophic effects. Those are just facts. I don't think it's natural, I don't think the earth will be 'just fine' and I don't think there's anything ridiculous about it.

Whyareweallhere · 26/02/2019 19:42

Does anyone feel like they have to rush out because it’s sunny? Incase we don’t have anymore?

Skyejuly · 27/02/2019 11:44

Yes. Every time!

April241 · 27/02/2019 11:56

why yes! I'm nightshift tonight, have been up since 7am with the kids and am waiting in for a parcel but feel like I absolutely must go out even for half an hour Grin. I won't though, once the parcel arrives we're all off to bed for a nap.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 27/02/2019 12:24

If this is global warming, fucking bring it on! (JOKING, for all the pearl clutchers).

I have felt so happy and joyful these past few days and feel very morose that here at least (Yorkshire) it's going to go back to being cold and wet from tomorrow.

I love the sun.

Alaimo · 27/02/2019 12:36

Dodie66 The Medieval Warm Period was indeed a time of warm temperatures in the UK. However, The Medieval Warm Period is thought to have been mostly a regional phenomenon, with the extremes reflecting a redistribution of heat around the planet rather than a big overall rise in the average global temperature.

What is clear, both from the temperature reconstructions and from independent evidence – such as the extent of the recent melting of mountain glaciers – is that the planet has been warmer in the past few decades than at any time during the medieval period. In fact, the world may not have been so warm for 6000 or even 125,000 years.

Alaimo · 27/02/2019 12:42

I think a few hot days in February alone is little to worry about. However, I do think it is worrying that 17 of the 18 warmest years have occurred since 2000 (based on data collected since 1880). A couple of warm days is not a trend, 17 out of 18 years is.
