Momo - To delete YouTube for all

DC watch a mix of documentaries, gaming and family challenge videos on YouTube. The eldest uses it to practice singing between lessons.
Momo has terrified me, my youngest DC8 is very sensitive so I really want to try and protect them.
Eldest DC has known about momo for a while and is a bit hardier but feel like it wouldn't be fair to 'allow' one and not the other.
What have you decided to do about momo?

I asked my 7 year old if he’d seen it and he said no but his friends at school have had

That's what ALL kids will say. There is ALWAYS a kid who has done the thing, seen the thing or whatever. Doesn't make it true.

NotANotMan · 26/02/2019 09:10

one of her friends had posted about her 6 yo dd watching disturbing content about Momo on YouTube kids.

Nobody said that YouTube doesn't have momo videos and all kinds of other nasty stuff. That's why parents need to supervise and not trust the kids app to filter our nasty stuff. That is NOT the same as what people are suggesting that momo videos somehow pop up in regular videos aimed at kids.

BirthdayKake · 26/02/2019 09:12

Can you put security settings on YouTube on a smart TV?

NotANotMan · 26/02/2019 09:15

@gkite0202 can you link it here please?

StopMakingAFoolOutofMe · 26/02/2019 09:18

I spent a bit of time yesterday trying to find even one of these videos, and even after searching and searching, referring to Elsagate and using other sites than YouTube, I haven't managed to find anything horrific other than a couple of videos such as "people react to Momo", or ones that are advertised as Momo Free Kinder openings.

NotANotMan · 26/02/2019 09:19

You can, but you still have to check what they are watching.

IMO the best way to safeguard kids on YouTube is to check out a few YouTube channels that have a lot of subscribers and who post about whatever your kid likes watching, google them and check out their swearing policy etc, and then tell your kids they are only allowed to watch those channels. Obviously you still need to supervise but if you tell them not to click 'suggested videos' and you turn off auto play they should be fairly safe.
The worst thing they can do is click the suggested videos at the side. They are like 6th degrees of separation to some nasty shit.

Meandmetoo · 26/02/2019 09:31

Gkite can you link please so we can all see an example? Thanks in advance!

gkite0202 · 26/02/2019 09:34

The video was posted on Facebook, so I'm not sure how to link it? It could have easily been edited Blush but my 2 year old loves a YouTube binge so I myself am quite worried about this!

MarshaBradyo · 26/02/2019 09:37

Better to avoid YouTube for a two year old, there’s enough for them to watch on safer sites if you want them to watch stuff

Meandmetoo · 26/02/2019 09:39

The title of the video? Or the name of the FB page that's posted it?

Or if it's a YouTube video on FB it opens up the YouTube app doesn't it? So it should be in your recently viewed?

There's a lot of worried parents so it would be great to help them out by showing them an example.

sagradafamiliar · 26/02/2019 09:45

It doesn't pop up. Why say it does? Are you just trying to promote this dangerous, stupid game? It's just the latest 'blue whale' style moral panic/urban myth.
Like slenderman, that 'this girl didn't share this comment so she was killed in her bed' spam, chain mail ect

sagradafamiliar · 26/02/2019 09:46

Gkite why lie?

gkite0202 · 26/02/2019 09:49

This is it

Momo - To delete YouTube for all
sagradafamiliar · 26/02/2019 09:51

So you did lie then. You saw you saw the vid pop up halfway through Peppa. What you've just posted is a screenshot off FB.

Meandmetoo · 26/02/2019 09:53

I'm sure gkite isn't lying, why would someone hype it all up even more? That's just stupid, really immature and pathetic.

I can tell they are as concerned as others are so I'm sure the link or FB page or video title will be posted soon so we all know how this momo character presents in videos so we can all be vigilant. No parent would keep that info to themselves if they have seen it. It's not as if they can come back and say it's been deleted because we all know that/YouTube don't act that fast so they have no reason to lie.

sagradafamiliar · 26/02/2019 09:56

It doesn't pop up in videos.

haba · 26/02/2019 09:58

Who the fuck lets their 2yo bingewatch YouTube? Hmm

I call bullshit on your bullshit.

Meandmetoo · 26/02/2019 10:01

I've just seen that video gkite and you only have the posters word for it that it popped up in a Peppa pig video, the way you wrote your post made it sound like you saw it yourself. I think I that's where the confusion is, easy mistake to make.

It's clearly a fake, just someone jumping on the bandwagon saying they have seen something they haven't to hype it up and keep it going. What sort of sick bastard does that when it involves kids?

Meandmetoo · 26/02/2019 10:10

If you search momo song on YouTube that video is fhe 4th result. Interestingly the person who posted it also cut off the ending right where the credits come on. It doesn't come on halfway through a Peppa pig video.

Thankfully gkite, it's a load of bollocks :)

CRH1 · 26/02/2019 14:36

Unfortunately this thing targets kids. It’s not just unboxing videos...its any episodes of children’s programmes that LOs would typically enjoy for example Peppa Pig on YouTube Kids, Fortnite if you’re children are old enough. Anything innocent that little ones would watch and parents are used to them watching. A Google search will show you the kinds of things these sick people are doing to sully a perfectly innocent kiddies programme. It does this to try and avoid detection. Parental controls cannot filter this. I think the solution depends on the child and how much they can process/understand.

ClaireElizabethBeuchampFraser · 26/02/2019 14:50

NotaMan When I said about Momo- the videos themselves were not about Momo- the little girl was watching peppa pig and three minutes in there were disturbing voice overs and images. The Mum was there but having heard that the video was peppa pig, she switched off. My carers friend had to watch the full videos to see what had been disturbing her daughter.

sagradafamiliar · 26/02/2019 15:33

Really, CR, which ones have you seen?

blueshoes · 26/02/2019 15:46

I'm sure gkite isn't lying, why would someone hype it all up even more? That's just stupid, really immature and pathetic.

Because randoms on an internet would never lie or be stupid, immature or pathetic Hmm

BertieBotts · 26/02/2019 15:50

It's such bollocks, it's always "a friend of a friend" who's seen it or someone claims to have seen it but then won't link to it mysteriously.

The peppa pig ones are real but it's like others have said - if your kids are little enough to be watching peppa don't "switch off" - pay attention. And I really don't think they are made to trap kids. I just haven't seen anything which suggests this.

NotANotMan · 26/02/2019 16:33

I literally saw someone sharing a post to warn people that if your banana is a funny colour it's people injecting them with HIV infected blood Hmm
People love a scare
