Appalled at actions of hotel staff

Just back from spending a night in a 5* city centre hotel to visit dd at Uni.
Had a lovely meal out of hotel and came back for a drink in hotel bar ( approx 10pm) we were sitting on sofas near entrance to bar ( which is also adjacent to hotel restaurant) when dh said...there's a mouse under the sofa I was sitting on!...first of all shocked that a mouse was in hotel as floors are all tiled/ marble and no obvious signs of where it could have come from
Anyway we were merely intrigued and were watching where it went....bar staff came over to see what we were looking at...by this time dh and dd had gone to the loo, leaving me with dd's bf having a drink
Barman reappeared with 3 other members of staff, who then proceeded to hunt the mouse....( all this was happening behind our back)....there was suddenly a commotion and one of the staff stamped on the mouse - loud enough for me to hear it squeak ....by time I turned round again he'd stamped on it again ...completely sqauashed it
Dd and dh returned from loo, they missed what had occurred ( all this happened within 5 mins)
I was disgusted by hotel staff's actions but didn't feel like confronting them at the time as I was so taken aback and don't like confrontation . Bar man then came over and said would we like a complimentary drink Shock...I said no thanks and said goodbyes to dd and bf and went off to room ....horrible end to a lovely day
When we were checking out dh mentioned it to staff and they said they'd mention it to management...dh uses this hotel chain for business on a regular basis ( the main reason we'd used it, as he accrues loyalty points) and is asked for feedback...he'll be taking it up with their management but wwyd in these circumstances
Obviously mice in hotel is not desirable but the actions of the staff was barbaric ...I now feel cowardly for not having said anything at the time Sad

thats awful and would have upset me. Made me feel quite sick thinking about it.

Attitude84 · 25/02/2019 17:44

Im with OP. That’s awful. They could have caught him in a box or something and put him a field. Rats are worse than mice.

ginghamtablecloths · 25/02/2019 17:48

I was unpleasant but at least it would have died quickly, rather than a slower death by poison.

It would have been more diplomatic for them to catch it and kill it out of sight of guests.

mumlost1940 · 25/02/2019 17:49

Let me know the name and location of the hotel and I will pack my tranquiliser gun and offer my services for a free stay - as long as it takes.

EllenMP · 25/02/2019 17:51

Thanks to my cats I can report that a long-handled dustpan and brush is perfect for catching a mouse and carrying it safely outside for release. Restaurants always have those about for sweeping up unexpected crumbs. Stamping on it is gross and horrible. Poorly handled by staff.

covetingthepreciousthings · 25/02/2019 17:51

YANBU, that would have really upset me & put a complete dampener on the time away for me.

I get that it was possibly a hasty reaction from the member of staff, but this kind of thing shouldn't be done in front of guests.

MiGi777 · 25/02/2019 17:54

Id have been upset by that too. They full on killed the mouse in front of everybody which was was cruel and unnecessary. They should have caught it and put it outside. Its common sense.

AleFailTrail · 25/02/2019 18:01

My former workplace had a pest control company that used a humane device to kill rats and mice.
His name was Odin and he was an adorable Jack Russell terrier puppy. Very quick, very efficient. We did make sure the squeamish and the public were out the way when we used him though

BlimeyCalmDown · 25/02/2019 18:03

OP i'm with you I think that is absolutely horrendous :(
There are humane ways to get rid of mice, they should have done that.
Wish I hadn't read this thread....

MondeoFan · 25/02/2019 18:07

That's just awful I'd have been really upset and had to say something.
I've been out with people that have stood on a spider on purpose before and we ended up having an argument about it.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 25/02/2019 18:09

This sounds like a scene from The Witches

I agree op. I was always catching mice the cats brought in and releasing them elsewhere.

Stamping on it twice is horrible. I'd not want to see that and I'd have said something about their obvious lack of pest control which would put me off anyway.

WiddlinDiddlin · 25/02/2019 18:14

No need..

Catch it using a pint glass and a couple of sheets of paper. you make a corridor for the mouse to run down with the pint glass on its side at the end, the mouse sees the light at the end of that corridor and runs down it gladly to 'freedom', is caught in the glass.

Then you take it elsewhere and dispatch humanely.

No need to stamp on mice in a public place and the fact he had to do it twice suggests he didn't do a swift clean job of it at all!

Also those who say they’re good at catching mice their cat has brought in...have you thought that the mice you have are dazed, having babies been dragged in and possibly tortured toyed with, disorientated and are sluggish?

Oliversmumsarmy · 25/02/2019 18:32

Maybe the staff were the ones from this hotel

mumwon · 25/02/2019 18:33

I have not read all the way through (major sin sorry!) but mice don't tend to be single - so killing one is not going to help. & yes you do have to have humane traps in hidden places to catch them - killing a mouse like that would cause me concern on many levels - what are their kitchens like & am I likely to find them playing in my room or is it a sign of carelessness in health & hygiene in the hotel - & surely this would be considered to be inhumane (shudders)

Steamedbadger · 25/02/2019 18:36

Genuinely OP, what way of dealing with it would have made you happy? I'd have been thanking the stomper.

foolishbuffoon · 25/02/2019 18:39

I’ve worked in a kitchen this is how we dealt with them. Except the excuse for our team was the 21 stone guy was the only one to do it...

YoloTF · 25/02/2019 18:40

I'd have felt the same way OP. But im a sucker for animals and "vermin". Personally I think many humans are far more vermin than animals and rodents. Even though my pet rats are bitey little fuckers.

busymomtoone · 25/02/2019 18:43

Omg! Much as I dislike mice ( and wouldn’t expect to see them in a bog standard b&b let alone 5*hotel - obviously a discerning little blighter!) I am also very soppy about animals- and has I seen/ heard them do this pretty sure they would also have been cleaning vomit off the floor!! Unnecessarily cruel and horrible to witness. Having said that, not honestly sure what would be the alternative once they have let the mouse problem in. Sad though!

marvellousnightforamooncup · 25/02/2019 18:44

There were mice in two of my previous workplaces. I'm a total pro at catching them under a glass.

FairyMoppings · 25/02/2019 18:56

Quickest way to deal with it imo.

Very unpleasant to see - of course, I get that. But hotels can't have vermin running around. It can't be released outside as there's a risk it'll just return. Traditional mouse traps and poison cause slow painful deaths, and who knows how long it'll be running around spreading harmful bacteria before it's killed by trap/poison.

Although this seems horrific and barbaric, it really was the fastest way to kill it in the least painful way whilst dealing with a vermin issue in the most practical way. Time is of the essence when dealing with mice.

Sorry you experienced it, but it's a hard fact of life
