Appalled at actions of hotel staff

Just back from spending a night in a 5* city centre hotel to visit dd at Uni.
Had a lovely meal out of hotel and came back for a drink in hotel bar ( approx 10pm) we were sitting on sofas near entrance to bar ( which is also adjacent to hotel restaurant) when dh said...there's a mouse under the sofa I was sitting on!...first of all shocked that a mouse was in hotel as floors are all tiled/ marble and no obvious signs of where it could have come from
Anyway we were merely intrigued and were watching where it went....bar staff came over to see what we were looking at...by this time dh and dd had gone to the loo, leaving me with dd's bf having a drink
Barman reappeared with 3 other members of staff, who then proceeded to hunt the mouse....( all this was happening behind our back)....there was suddenly a commotion and one of the staff stamped on the mouse - loud enough for me to hear it squeak ....by time I turned round again he'd stamped on it again ...completely sqauashed it
Dd and dh returned from loo, they missed what had occurred ( all this happened within 5 mins)
I was disgusted by hotel staff's actions but didn't feel like confronting them at the time as I was so taken aback and don't like confrontation . Bar man then came over and said would we like a complimentary drink Shock...I said no thanks and said goodbyes to dd and bf and went off to room ....horrible end to a lovely day
When we were checking out dh mentioned it to staff and they said they'd mention it to management...dh uses this hotel chain for business on a regular basis ( the main reason we'd used it, as he accrues loyalty points) and is asked for feedback...he'll be taking it up with their management but wwyd in these circumstances
Obviously mice in hotel is not desirable but the actions of the staff was barbaric ...I now feel cowardly for not having said anything at the time Sad

Oh my goodness. You are being utterly ridiculous OP.

goodwinter · 24/02/2019 16:58

I keep pet rats and this would have really upset me badly.

I had pet rats and hearing/seeing someone stamp on a mouse would horrify me too :(

No, I don't know what else they could have done in that moment. But it would still be upsetting.

CloudyTuesday · 24/02/2019 17:05

I agree that it would be upsetting. But kind of unavoidably upsetting in the circumstances. Personally I would not be complaining or expecting compo or trying to get staff into trouble for taking the only sensible course of action open to them.

Crazybunnylady123 · 24/02/2019 17:14

I have pet rats and mice. I love animals. I wouldn’t of let them hurt it and I would of gone batshit. People can say what they want but it’s absolutely Diabolical to have no respect for life. Animals have a right to live without us stamping on them. Crueal and unkind- no feeling people hurt animals.

Onemorewonthurt · 24/02/2019 17:15

I can't believe paid think it's ok to stamp on a mouse a few times to get rid of it Shock. Why not use a bucket?? Guide it out of a door with a brush each?? But to stamp on it, fucking hell. Next time I see a dog or cat indoors, I'll kick it in the throat a few times, that should do it 🤷🏽‍♀️

I would have been horrified and would not have gone back.

That is really disgusting. They could have just caught it and put it outside.

goldopals · 24/02/2019 17:37

Have any of you ever lived through a mouse plague? It is the best way to kill them. It's not inhumane; it happens quickly.

lisamac28 · 24/02/2019 17:38

You've obviously never had to deal with catching a mouse. They are so so fast it's almost impossible. I had mice in my house, they were coming from a nearby field...I tried the humane thing, trying to catch them in tubs etc...it was impossible so had to resort to traps.

AfterSchoolWorry · 24/02/2019 17:39

Yabu.

My dh had to bludgeon a baby mouse to death with a bottle of brown sauce once. It was not a nice death, but it was trying to go into the fridge and that was the nearest thing to hand.

It's them or us.

Onemorewonthurt · 24/02/2019 17:39

From where?
It's a hotel, surely there's a back office or a little cleaning cupboard tucked away in the reception area?

Where are these brushes coming from?
Anywhere! Of course the mouse isn't going to wait, but it's likely to avoid people where possible so will probably go in the opposite direction.

Anyway, it really doesn't matter where it's coming from, it's awful people are so ok with it... to the point of advocating for it Hmm

pineappletower · 24/02/2019 17:43

That's grim. WTF is wrong with people.

cdtaylornats · 24/02/2019 17:43

Would the OP be fussing if they had swatted a wasp?

Onemorewonthurt · 24/02/2019 17:44

Well, the closest I've come is having a pet mouse. You say you tried the humane way, in that case who can fault you? The hotel didn't. If I'm honest, it just upsets me that we're so happy to dispose of inconvenient lives.

Bellatrix14 · 24/02/2019 17:47

I completely agree with you OP, I’m surprised that so many people don’t to be honest. Mice might be vermin but they are still alive and feel pain. They are not much different species wise to a hamster and I’m sure people would be up in arms about a hamster being stamped to death! And for all those people saying it would have been quick it obviously wasn’t quick if it squeaked the first time and had to be stamped on again! It’s actually made me feel quite sick reading it Sad

I guess perhaps they were worried that if they didn’t deal with it then you would complain about that, so I do see why they felt obliged to act quickly. I’m still of the opinion that they were in the wrong though.

Lizzie48 · 24/02/2019 17:52

Maybe they were afraid of getting into trouble with the management if they failed to catch the mouse. There could have been complaints, it being a five star hotel.

grinningcheshirecat · 24/02/2019 17:52

I think mice are really cute but the best way to deal with them is a quick death, which it got. Too many "soft" deaths are just foltering the poor thing for days on end. Poison makes them feel ill and die slowly. Catching them and setting them outside makes a lot die from hunger because they're not used to the country. At least this way it was over really quick.

getback · 24/02/2019 18:04

Yes obviously mice are not acceptable, I get that 🙄....but hearing someone stamp on it , and in front of guests was maybe not the way to go about it

Sorry but get over yourself. This is why I think meat shouldn't be sold in nice tidy packets with no resemblance to what it was.... either accept what happens to animals or object to it but don't be a snowflake who just doesn't want to know about it Hmm

WanderingDaffodil · 24/02/2019 18:14

I'm very impressed the barman was fast enough to kill with two stamps of the foot tbh. I've tried to catch mice and never been fast enough.

They are vermin. They spread disease. They shit in your cereal.

The hotel acted quickly and far more humanely than your average trap. No, it's not nice to hear that kind of squidge and I'd definitely have taken the free drink to ease that queasiness.

I feel I live in an alternate reality to many of the posters on here. I kill wasps and flies. I've just had to pause my post to deal with a bastard mosquito in my kitchen. And I do not want mice in my house or hotel.

I'm with AfterSchoolWorry "It's them or us."

OftenHangry · 24/02/2019 18:14

I finally found the people who keep mice infested restaurants in business 😂 Always wondered who eats there

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 24/02/2019 18:35

From reading the comments what most people mean by "humane" is out of my sight. Poison, traps, released far away etc means the mouse will die anyways. But it's humane cause the poor ickle customers aren't "traumatised " by the experience.Hmm
