To want to sob because of this mouth ulcer

I've got a bloody great ulcer on my tongue and it's so painful. Eating and drinking is agony and I honestly just want to sit and sob. How long do ulcers take to heal?

Photo please for all is sporners out there.

I used to have loads, my dentist used to be thrilled if I had one when I went to see him. Used to drag all the nurses in to have a look. Corsodyl and Bongela work for me. Remember my DF used to paint them with Iodine, now that really hurt.

A dab of Marmite is the best cure for mouth ulcers. Dab it on and forget all about it. Will be gone next time you check it. Obviously a tongue is harder to keep it on tho.

A dab of table salt always works for me!
It hurts soooo much but it's usually almost completely gone the next day.
Also I've use my baby's bonjela before and that was incredibly effective for the pain.

Try Frador. You can buy it on amazon. Amazing stuff

Wow there are some wierd and wonderful suggestions! Forgot to say, Iglu also helps me sleep when i have hideous ulcers as it is the only treatment which works as an immediate physical barrier. All of the other treatments suggested here are ways to sterilize it. Just before bed gargle with Corsodyl to sterilise the ulcer then put a big blob of Iglu on dry ulcer (dry with cotton buds), flatten it with wet tongue (your own :) ) and it should stop your teeth rubbing against it overnight. I normally put some more on during the night.

Put some salt on it. Hurts like a bitch but it'll get rid. Wet your finger and dip it in salt then put it on the ulcer

Firstly mouth ulcers are not caused by germs.
Secondly never ever put an aspirin in the mouth and let it dissolve. Aspirin dissolves in saliva and produces salicylic acid - the same stuff that is in verruca treatments. This causes a chemical burn in the mouth so causing more damage (and pain).Just google aspirin burn in mouth if you don’t believe me.

Oorwulliesbucket · 24/02/2019 09:38

Was just coming on to say the same robin!! Please don't put aspirin on it.

DistressedAndWorried7845 · 24/02/2019 09:40

I put alum powder on for as long as I can stand it, rinse it off and it’s gone by the next day. Just don’t swallow the alum!

Just as an aside, for the last 2 days I've been feeling really unwell, hot/cold, aching etc. Do you think it could be related to this ulcer or is it just a happy coincidence?

Hello everyone my parent is a specialist in oral pathology and mouth ulcers are a specialty which is great as I get them really badly.
They recommend corsydl mouthwash or the boots own brand one used undiluted twice a day after teeth brushing. Frequent rinsing of mouth with hot salty water and paracetamol for pain relief.

Get your vit b12 levels checked and your thyroid levels as well.

Disclaimer- it’s my parent and not me dishing out the advice!!!!!

EKGEMS · 25/02/2019 18:26

Colgate brand Peroxyl mouth wash is amazing for those. You can ask your GP or dentist for a RX oral mouthwash that numbs the pain we call it magic mouthwash in the states

Firstworddinosaur · 25/02/2019 18:47

Be careful putting anything directly in the ulcer. You only need keep it clean with a mouth wash or gentle salt water. Difflam works for me if the ulcer is inflamed. Mine are caused by just being run down or contact with citrus fruit, tomatoes and too salty crisps (all my favourite things unfortunately). If they get really bad please do see your dentist who can refer you to a dental hospital. I got a course of steroids that really took the edge off them and my quality of life was better afterwards. Sympathies!
