To wonder if I could be allergic to toilet roll!?

Ansumpasty · 23/02/2019 11:55

I’ve been having awful ongoing issues down there for almost 6 months. Been tested for everything under the sun and the only thing that comes back is b strep. Basically feels like thrush, but with an alkaline ph and no answers!

Right before this started, I had a bad skin reaction to a facial treatment. I then had an allergic reaction to hair dye (tint) for the first time in my life. Been colouring my hair since I was 16 and never had an issue.

Is it possible that non scented and not aloe Vera covered toilet roll could cause a reaction? Anyone else ever had issues like this or AIBU and just clutching at straws in desperation...

Haven't logged in in a long time, but needed to answer this...

I had so many issues with thrush and UTIs (now have a diagnosis of interstitial cystitis) but coconut oil with a tiny bit of tea tree oil worked wonders for me Blush when everything is sore, the coconut oil moisturises and soothes; both are antifungal so assist with thrush.

Due to poor health, I had oral thrush for a year. Whenever i get prescribed anti-bs, I ask for thrush meds. But the best solution I have found is a tampon coated in coconut oil, few drops of tea tree oil, used once a day for approx 6 hours, for no more than a week.

Thrush seemed to cause the cystitis and vice versa (and my period caused both). I really hope you find something that works for you, the hell of swollen, cracked, bleeding labia, with a burning urethra, cannot be underestimated.

I wish all fellow sufferers the very best.

I have looked for a toilet roll that contains no irritants, but the manufacturers don't seem to supply such a thing. Wouldn't this be helpful? No bleach, formaldehyde, perfumes, etc. At least I haven't noticed such a thing in supermarkets and I don't want to have to start buying things like this online.

Instead we get products with even more stuff added, such as shea and aloes. Presumably to soothe away the irritation caused by other irritating ingredients they include.

Is it not possible to have a real hypoallergenic toilet roll?

Ansumpasty · 24/02/2019 19:36

@GinnyLane thank you x

Thanks for all the replies! It’s crazy that the manufacturers can get away with putting so many chemicals all over it.

I’ve managed 24 hours with no toilet roll, just water wipes or old towels. Will keep it up for a week (work is going to be tricky...) and update!

Good luck ansum hope you get some relief.

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 24/02/2019 21:18

I have vulvodynia, never thought it could be loo roll related, will think about that.

Cream wise, I found some stuff on Amazon called Vulva Harmony (what a name for a girl group that would behaha) which has helped things a lot. I also have a steroid ointment but save that for really bad flare ups.

rosiejaune · 24/02/2019 22:16

We use family cloth (though not for the same reason). Organic cotton wipes (made by Imse Vimse). I keep a beaker of water by the toilet to dampen them before use. They go in the normal washing with everything else (just like underwear).

I still use toilet roll when out, but you could take some out with you in a wet bag if necessary.

madroid · 24/02/2019 22:24

Recycled paper loo roll seems a safe Bet
And cushelle

longwayoff · 24/02/2019 22:38

No recycled for me thanks. And I got this from using Cushelle so none of that either. Ouch.

longwayoff · 13/03/2019 21:34

Seamstressfromtreaclemineroad, the Dermol cream has been wonderfully helpful, thank you so much for recommendation. OP, I hope you and other itchers have all found some relief.

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 16/03/2019 18:06

@longwayoff I'm so glad that it helped Smile I've recommended Dermol to several people with itchy skin (in various places..!) and they've all found it helpful

Thisismadness · 16/03/2019 18:28

It hasn’t occurred to me it could be loo roll. I’ve had this going on for a few months and I was convinced it must be a product I’m using, I’ve been cutting out bath stuff, shower gel etc. But loo roll would explain why it’s mainly ‘down there! I’m so glad I found this thread it’s been driving me mad.

longwayoff · 16/03/2019 18:29

Grateful thanksHalo

YANBU, I've had similar issues, constantly sore, itchy, recurrent thrush, redness.

I blamed certain lube & types of condoms DH had bought. Then twigged it was the loo roll. My DM recently asked if I had any issues with the same loo roll not flushing away properly and felt 'plasticky' - which I had alongside my other issues.

I wouldn't care but these particular brand is in association with the woodland trust & helps with trees being replanted Hmm

BigBairyHollocks · 16/03/2019 23:48

For anyone who has irritation below that doesn’t clear up,insist the doctor sends you to a gynaecologist or a dermatologist,as this can in rare cases be a symptom of a cancer.A family friend who thought she had recurrent thrush or allergies was recently diagnosed (pagets diesease) and it will be life changing for her.Obviously in most cases it won’t be that, but worth following up with doctors in any cases where an ailment won’t clear up with over the counter prescriptions.

aspoonfulofyourownmedicine · 16/03/2019 23:48

I've also switched to reusable sanitary products and I've not had a flare of thrush around my period since ( about 8 mths). I just keep a lidded bucket of cold water & stain remover in the loo and throw the lot in on a cold wash every couple of days. Some people would find it icky but once I got over the initial 'ewww' I've never looked back. Like a PP said, Always changed years back and looking back, thats when initial problems started with soreness & itchiness around TOTM.

Purpleartichoke · 16/03/2019 23:57

I am allergic to many facial tissues and sanitary products. I’m also allergic to almost all soap. So far I have been ok with toilet roll, but I have seen some in stores that I definitely could not use. Thankfully no one I know has stocked their home with it, but it wouldn’t surprise me if I someday have to start adding it to the bag of allergen safe products I have to tote around so I have the option of washing my hands when needed.

Purpleartichoke · 16/03/2019 23:59

Also wanted to add that the first place I break out when exposed to airborne allergens like someone wearing perfume is my labia and low stomach. I don’t need to touch them, just walk past them in a store or get too close to the fragrant detergent aisle and I’m in misery. So you might also have an airborne allergy.

picklemepopcorn · 17/03/2019 06:54

Who Gives a Crap deliver ethical, environmentally sound loo roll. I get the bamboo one.

www.talkable.com/x/SdMl8e#

Will give you (and me) £5 off.

WhereIsMyTVRemote · 17/03/2019 07:30

I get this with all sorts. Can't have bubble bath, god forbid. Have never twigged it might be some toilet rolls but this is a revelation! Thanks op.

Bloody horrible isn't it :(

k1233 · 17/03/2019 07:48

I've got a few suggestions that I've seen online / had friends discuss

  • on ebay you can get a bidet converter (for want of a better word) that can be installed on a normal toilet
  • for sanitary products there are tulip or moon cups that could replace tampons and reusable cotton pads
Octopus37 · 17/03/2019 08:57

I'm watching this with interest, have a UTI at the moment, at first I thought it was thrush, though think it is as well. Have occasionally noticed irritation from sanitary towels. Also have decided to cut back on sugar, even though I dont think that I could follow the candida diet properly as it seems that you have to restrict everything. Does anyone else feel as if they have a massive lack of energy when they have these symptoms, at the moment feel like a knackered out old woman, I'm 44

FTMtobe18 · 30/01/2020 21:59

Hi all, I am hoping that some of you ladies are still active on here.

I shall start at the beginning.

I had my 2nd LO December 2019, normal vaginal delivery with no stitches. Healed well and no problems in that area. Lochia for around 4 weeks then started again for 3 days and then I was done.

Purchased cheap toilet roll from Aldi a few weeks back.

I had been wiping front to back of course but I think I was pressing/rubbing quite firmly inside my vagina each time I went for a wee (I think to check to see if there was any more blood or discharge)

So fast forward and for the last few weeks I have been so uncomfortable up there. I kept saying to my partner I feel like I've got a water infection. No burning when I wee, no itching just uncomfortable. Almost like when you hold a wee in for hours or a whole day and then you go, it leaves you with a bloody awful feeling, well its that feeling I have.

So I did a urine sample which was sent off and it came back fine. However the GP put me on a general weeks course of antibiotics as a matter course. I went back to the GP on day 5 of 7 of the antibiotics and said look I'm no better it feels horrid and the tablets are not working. So I've done another one and that too was fine. I've had a swab done and waiting for the results currently. I have stuck a pessary in just in case and I've been taking cystitis sachets today and tomorrow just in case.

I haven't changed any wash powders or soaps etc. We have had sex once since LO and that was weeks ago (as we want to wait until 8 wks so we can get a formal contraception in place).

I am so worried as to what it could be. It makes me want to hold myself down there if that makes sense? Like applying pressure eases it somehow. It's a jiggly irritated uncomfortable feeling.

Did any of you ladies get any answers if you've had tests done etc? Could it be that cheap loo roll from aldo that I've been pressing into my moo?

sigh I feel the worry has just completely taken me over

Malbecfan · 30/01/2020 22:07

To those reacting to fabric conditioner, try a tablespoon of white vinegar instead of the fabric conditioner. It gets rid of the build up of detergent but also helps to soften the clothes.

Drum2018 · 30/01/2020 22:26

Ha Drum! Got this from Cushelle

Thinking the Cushelle isn't working for me anymore and @TicketyBoo83 I was only googling today and came across the cheeky panda brand so I'll try that.

@FTMtobe18 is the sensation there all the time? I had the most awful sensation down there a couple of years ago, which lasted about 4 months and went to the gp who couldn't find anything. He had a good rummage, tested urine, did vaginal swab. All was fine. In the end after much googling I decided it was irritation of the pudendal nerve. It may not have been but I couldn't come up with anything else. It was like a constant tingle/irritation, not painful though. I thought I'd go out of my mind. Then it just stopped.

FTMtobe18 · 02/02/2020 11:58

@Drum2018 yes it's there all the time and sometimes feels worse than others.
My latest urine sample and swab came back clear, which of course is good and yet I'd hoped it would have show thrush and that would have at least made me know why I was feeling like this.
I've used a pessary and cystitis sachets and still no improvement.
I am just dabbing when I have a wee instead of wiping, as to not irritate it.
I'm so uncomfortable :( it's like I have to old my bits and this is far tmi but even my clitoris feels uncomfortable. I am at a loss really. The prudendal nerve does sound kind of like it I guess. But I'm worrying as to the what's ifs and what is it.
