I have a hotpoint washing machine. It’s 3 years old and it’s broken. It needs a new digital screen at the cost of £100 for the part and a call out fee of £100.
So my DH thinks we should get it fixed.
I want a new machine but this has happened to every single machine I’ve boughy.
They last out the 12 month guarantee period then they stop working.

Aibu to ask about your machine?
I don’t want to spend more than £200 because the buggers just break!

Maybe spend more than £200 and they won't break so quickly?
Zanussi washing machine owner and been going for a 3 years np issues yet
(Previous hotpoint was crap and always breaking)

CosmicCanary · 23/02/2019 08:35

Mine was £299 big drum high spin speed and it is linked to my phone so I can start the washer from work Grin
I avoided another digital one in favour of a dial and buttons as i found the only digital display ones always break. Even if the display screen on mine broke it would still work as all that is for is to say how long is left.

Hot point and indesit machines are poor quality as you’ve discovered. A family member of mine used to be an engineer for them and they wouldn’t ever buy anything made by them. They recommend Bosch appliances or Miele more expensive initially but will cost you less in replacing them all the time.

Blue5238 · 23/02/2019 08:38

I have a bosch. I'm on my second now but the first lasted about 9 years and that's with kids and lots of washing.

bert3400 · 23/02/2019 08:38

We have a Zannusi which we got with our new build house, 10 years ago. It's used daily . If it breaks I would get another one

DameSquashalot · 23/02/2019 08:39

Can you spend a bit more to prevent you having to constantly replace? (It might be more than 'a bit' but will save you in the long run)

Earslaps · 23/02/2019 08:39

We had a Hoover machine that lasted 15 months.

So we bought a Siemens machine that came with an included 5 year warranty. It was expensive but has worked out much cheaper per year than the rubbish cheap machine.

Don't want to jinx it though by thinking how old it is now! We've only had to have a repair man out once (it was out of warranty) because one of those shirt collar things had blocked the pump.

I regularly do a service wash to clear out dirt and limescale to help prolong its life.

bobstersmum · 23/02/2019 08:45

I think you can interest free credit at some places at you could get a better one? My mum does this and she gets a service plan so it's all covered, no idea how much though although I think it might be from curry's.

llangennith · 23/02/2019 08:45

My LG is on its last legs but is 15 years old so I'll be buying a new one soon. Wouldn't expect to pay less than around £250 or £300 to get a decent washing machine.
Never had one that lasted less than 5 years.

PettyContractor · 23/02/2019 08:50

You seem unlucky. My current Zanussi washer-dryer is about ten years old. My previous Hoover lasted about ten years. The Zanussi I had before that lasted about ten years. I think I've only ever had one repairman visit in 30 years. (Though I did fix the Hoover door hinges myself about a year before it expired.)

PettyContractor · 23/02/2019 08:52

I should point out that for both Zanussi's, ten years underestimates their life, as the current one is still going, and the earlier one was left behind when I moved house.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 23/02/2019 08:53

I have a zanussi that’s been going for five years.

Wakk · 23/02/2019 09:09

Of course get a new one. Don't waste £200 on a repair.

Get a beko or something and it'll still last about 5 years

CastleCrasher · 23/02/2019 09:22

My Samsung one is eight years old and going strong. I'd buy new, but buy decent quality

nutbrownhare15 · 23/02/2019 09:25

Get a month's subscription to Which? Alas they rate makes and machines for reliability. I bought one recommended by them for less than £300. It's still going 18 months later.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 23/02/2019 09:25

We’re happy with our 5+ year old Samsung.

WobblyLondoner · 23/02/2019 09:27

Bosch. Have had two in my entire adult life, and I'm over 50.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 23/02/2019 09:27

I don’t know about their washing Machines but our beko freezer is poor quality and our Beko dishwasher started smoking!

BlueMerchant · 23/02/2019 09:28

Our indesit was around £330 from Argos.Had it 4years so far. Working perfectly. 2x long washes per day.

Loyaultemelie · 23/02/2019 09:29

Another Samsung vote here

DistressedAndWorried7845 · 23/02/2019 09:30

Get a Bosch, theyre the nuts. Mine is going strong and it was born in 2007

Mcclare · 23/02/2019 09:35

Had a Bosch before lasted 10+ years.
Our newer Samsung going 2+ years no problems.
I wash every day. Spend more it’s worth it in the long run.

onalongsabbatical · 23/02/2019 09:48

Bosch seventeen years never a single problem!

WhatNow40 · 23/02/2019 09:57

I've had SMEG for my last 2 washers. I know they're expensive. First one lasted 7 years, second is on year 6. If you are able to afford a more expensive one, they will last longer.

CurcubitaPepo · 23/02/2019 10:59

Have a basic Miele for 14 years. Cost £500 in 2005. Never skipped a beat. In laws have one that’s 25 years old which the door latch broke last year and was repaired.
