I have a hotpoint washing machine. It’s 3 years old and it’s broken. It needs a new digital screen at the cost of £100 for the part and a call out fee of £100.
So my DH thinks we should get it fixed.
I want a new machine but this has happened to every single machine I’ve boughy.
They last out the 12 month guarantee period then they stop working.

Aibu to ask about your machine?
I don’t want to spend more than £200 because the buggers just break!

We bought a Miele at auction for £100, it lasted 18 years. Then bought a refurbished AEG off eBay for around £150 and I would say it's as good as the Miele, perhaps better as the drum is much bigger.

You could get 3 or 4 years with a Bosch, more if you are really lucky. They used to last a lot longer but the new ones are not so good. Have had 4 Bosch ones and each one died earlier than the previous one. Tried Samsung, highly rated on MN and it was horrendous and in the end had to be returned to the shop.

Hotpoint are crap, had Whirlpool, not from choice and that was also crap (are they still made?).

SpringForEver · 23/02/2019 14:00

BTW if you pay more the warranty is longer with some manufacturers.

babycakes1010 · 23/02/2019 14:02

Another vote for Samsung

MuchTooTired · 23/02/2019 14:06

My hoover washing machine is still going strong 9-10 years later, was under £200. Does sometimes not spin out properly so have to put it on spin again, but it doesn’t happen often enough to warrant buying a new one, even though I’d love to get one with a bigger drum.

Alsohuman · 23/02/2019 14:13

Bosch dishwasher was the worst value ever, it died immediately after the warranty expired with a fault that apparently is legendary My Indesit washing machine is seven years old in May, it does about five loads a week and is spinning smoothly right now.

My Bosch has finally given up the ghost (although it's the first and last time it has broken down) after 20+ years of daily washes (large family). It was expensive (£700 in 1996, I think...) but a lot cheaper than buying a new machine for £200 every year or two.

beanaseireann · 23/02/2019 15:59

My Bosch has lasted 17 years. I've had to have two call outs for problems and both fixed easily.
Used every second day.
If I had the money I'd buy Miele the next time but my Bosch has been brilliant.

I had a zanussi last which lasted about 15 years so was going to get another of those when it finally gave up the ghost. However I got talking to a washing machine repair man and asked for advice. He said not to get another zanussi as they are not made the same now as they used to be. According to him the only brands he would buy were Mieile, LG or Bosch. Ended up getting an LG one and am very happy so far.

Hellohah · 23/02/2019 16:13

I have a Bosch. Think it was about £440 with staff discount through work, so expensive (ish).
I had a Bosch before and it was easily 20 years old before it broke (it was a hand me down and meant to tide me over as I'd just bought a house). To be fair, I never cleaned out the filter so the motor went, probably would have lasted longer.

anniehm · 23/02/2019 16:17

My beko is 7 years old, cost £260

Waveysnail · 23/02/2019 16:47

I al2ays buy one with 5 yr guarantee included. John Lewis usually have some good deals. Also catalogue like Very - u can buy extended warranty

Raspberry10 · 23/02/2019 17:00

I’ve had the same Bosch machine for 14 years now and I live in a hard water area. So can recommend them. I think it was £400ish

MitziK · 23/02/2019 17:08

14 year old Bosch. £359 (I think, might have been more as I bought it at the same time as a dishwasher). Told I was stupid for spending so much when you could get a machine for under two hundred.

It's looking old, it's got a couple of cracks and dents and the doorhandle had to be glued back together a couple of years ago - but it's only going to be replaced when it goes bang. With a Miele if I have anything to do with it (which I do because I buy the appliances).

Every one of my friends who opted for the cheaper ones are on about their 6th machine by now, if not more. The ones who didn't are, like me, still on the same machines they had back in 2005.

diddl · 23/02/2019 17:09

" I know they're expensive. First one lasted 7 years,"

I don't think that that's lon at all tbh.

mangolover · 23/02/2019 17:21

Mine is hotpoint - no digital screen though.
It's still ok I've had it 5 years

Thewindsofchange · 23/02/2019 17:22

Our Bosch (basic model £280) has just had a £65 repair after 11 years. Washing machine repair man has the same model. I make that £31 a year and it's still going.

45andahalf · 23/02/2019 17:22

We've just replaced a Whirlpool that lasted 10 years. It was in a flat we rented out for 6 of those, and heavily used by us for another 4 years afterwards too. It was only a cheap one too! We’ve replaced it with a Samsung ecobubble with a massively drum, seems fine so far.

45andahalf · 23/02/2019 17:25

The bearings went in our Whirlpool. Not sure if it was fixable - it only had a 5 kg drum and I’d had enough of taking two loads to do a towel ash, and we just got married so we used some of our wedding present money to get the new one.

MuchTooTired · 24/02/2019 12:27

After smugly posting about my hoover washing machine yesterday, it sadly died overnight and will be going to washing machine heaven in a couple of days time.

I’m now looking at a Kenwood machine from Currys.

7yo7yo · 24/02/2019 12:33

@MuchTooTired
My condolences.
May it RIP in hoover heaven.
I am still undecided.
Apparently Indesit are made by the same people as hotpoint but I’ve seen a Samsung I like.
So I’m hoping to collect one tomorrow if I can find where they have it in stock!
