Anyone had their concert tickets cancelled by the organiser?

We have bought tickets for a concert on viagogo and DH has read that some events are not allowing viagogo customers and are cancelling their tickets. How is this is fair! We paid good money for these tickets and don’t see why some venues think its ok to do this? Has anyone had this happen to them?

In the same situation. Have bought tickets for a birthday present and now worried we will get turned away at the door. It is for a birthday too so would be awful.
I can accept the mark up as I knew what I was paying for but I didn't realise what a bad reputation viagogo had, or that there we would receive tickets with someone else's name on them and there was a risk entry might be refused. Clearly totally naive but this is all new to me as it is 20 years since I have been to a concert.

I just had lunch with a friend who was asking me about Viagogo

I only know stuff about them from social media - she works crazy hours and does live in a bubble of work.

I agree with pp who say "how would you know" - I just looked at Viagogo and it does look like somewhere you could buy legit tickets. I don't go to concerts, but just happen to know from social media that it's a bit dodgy.

I do see how you could genuinely not know, it's really only luck that she mentioned it and I said, don't take the risk.

I went to see Ed Sheehan last year and you had to take photo ID and booking reference and they were all checked and marked if ok and if there was no proof they were cancelled and put on sale at face value at the ticket office.

That's the only gig I've been to where they've been that strict with it but it seems to be more and more artists are trying to fight against touts.

sparklytwinklyfairylights · 24/02/2019 20:28

I can't see the venue caring in the slightest if you're angry with them to be fair.

You said you had no choice other than to book through them so you must have known they were dodgy then so you have to take the risk of getting turned away on the night, solely due to the choice you made

Livedandlearned · 24/02/2019 20:51

The venue my ds went to was more than happy to stamp his ticket as invalid in order for us to.get a refund from viagogo and as pp have said about the Ed Sheeran concert. That doesn't exactly tally with that bullshit mentioned upthread about venues putting a percentage of tickets aside for touts.

LoniceraJaponica · 24/02/2019 20:51

"You said you had no choice other than to book through them so you must have known they were dodgy then"

Why must she have known?

Grace212 · 24/02/2019 20:55

Yes, I took "no choice" as "didn't see any other site selling them" which is exactly what my friend said today at lunch. If the venue website just says "sold out" how do you know other sites are dodgy?

I'm not 100% sure about this, but when Cumberbatch was in Hamlet, I remember colleagues paying over the odds to other agencies and they weren't touts, they were agencies who had been given a separate allocation or something?

yearinyearout · 24/02/2019 20:59

honeymum76 if the venue are cancelling your tickets, it means the barcode on them won't work.

yearinyearout · 24/02/2019 21:02

Lonicera twickets is a genuine reselling site. All tickets are sold at face value and it's endorsed by artists who don't want touts selling tickets. You can register to get alerts for events when tickets become available from genuine fans who can no longer attend and want to sell their tickets.

edwinbear · 24/02/2019 21:17

I really wanted to take DD to see Hugh Jackman. I couldn’t get tickets, so we’re not going. Nobody will die. Not going is a perfectly legitimate choice. I wouldn’t risk buying from a tout personally.

haydnp · 24/02/2019 21:30

I have just bought tickets off a stranger on Twitter for a concert this coming week. It's been a minefield of people asking for insane markups and numerous scammers. We believe the ones we have bought are legitimate but won't actually know until we get to the door.

Have previously bought from Viagogo without a problem. Was happy to pay the markup. Viagogo are not the actual touts, but the platform touts use. They add pressure to buy and high fees though.

Have heard of Viagogo cancelling tickets they were selling for a gig next week but not why. It's not for a big named artist so doubt it's for the same reasons Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift et al take issue with them. Ticketmaster have for unknown reasons sent out the tickets v late which could be a cause.

Livedandlearned · 24/02/2019 21:41

Viagogo are touts, they also sell tickets they don't have www.itv.com/news/london/2018-06-18/itv-news-investigation-viagogo-advertises-concert-tickets-it-doesnt-have/
