To think £250 on gas and electric is far too much?

Curiousmum69 · 21/02/2019 20:19

I'm currently paying £250 a month for gas and electricity on a 4 bed semi detached pretty standard house. Aibu to think this is crazy high.

What are others paying and how can I reduce this

I pay £98 for both for a 2 bed house, but I have the heating up HIGH and I have a tumble dryer so no one to blame but myself

scottiesheep · 21/02/2019 20:29

4bed detached new build -£50 utility point

Stressedout10 · 21/02/2019 20:30

Can you smell gas ?
Could your meter be connected to a neighbour's house?

JasperKarat · 21/02/2019 20:30

Ours has just gone up to £156 a month, I'm at home on mat leave with DS so the heating is on more than it usually would be , 3 bed Edwardian semi. We've just re-lagged the loft (cost about £200) and it feels warmer especially upstairs, which means the heating hasn't been on as much

Bunnybigears · 21/02/2019 20:30

In that case yes it's a lot. Put your figures into uswitch and get yourself on a better tariff.

OnlyYellowRoses · 21/02/2019 20:31

I'm 118 a month gas and electric. Large 3 bed detached house. Home most of the day with tv/washing machine going. 1 adult and 4 kids living here

Imissgmichael · 21/02/2019 20:33

Do you have heating on 24/7 because that seems really high.

Lightofday · 21/02/2019 20:34

Crazy high. I'm in a big 3 bedroom flat and its never any more than 55 per month for gas and electric combined. Are you using storage heaters? Because I used to be about £110 per month in a small 2 bedroom and yet the place was always freezing. Storage heaters are gutsy sods.

dementedpixie · 21/02/2019 20:35

Is the bill mainly for gas or electric? Has it always been this high?

Honeypickle · 21/02/2019 20:35

We pay £250 a month but are in debit, last email said it should be £333 a month! 5 bed, 3 floors plus a hot tub.

Curiousmum69 · 21/02/2019 20:36

No. We don't have heating on 24/7. Both work full time. So the house is empty a lot. Teenagers so lots of gadgets.

Apparently my usage has increased 57% since this tine last year.

All my attempt to save money seem to be costing us money!!!

What you pay monthly is largely irrelevant. If you want to work out if you are paying too much you need to find out what unit rates and standing charges you are paying and how many KWH you typically use in a year. You can't compare what you are paying against others as they could just be on a cheaper tariff or using less energy.

Curiousmum69 · 21/02/2019 20:36

No. never been this high before.

175 on electric and 75 on gas.

That's really high as other pps have said. We pay £71 pm for a big 4 double bedroom 3 storey Victorian townhouse and heating on when we like. We do also have a logburner and try to avoid using the tumble dryer too much -because I'm a tight git- and don't leave TV on standby/lights on everywhere etc

We got our bill down to £35 pm in our last house a 1930s 3 bed semi.

mineofuselessinformation · 21/02/2019 20:38

I live in a fairly new, energy efficient detached house. My bills are just over a third of what I used to pay in the previous (also detached) property. It was built in the eighties and there really is no comparison in terms of insulation, no matter what is added later.

Random18 · 21/02/2019 20:38

I would say something is not right.
Is your meter right.
I remember at an old house our water meter was going round and round at some rate.

We were lucky that it was a problem outside our property boundary.

dementedpixie · 21/02/2019 20:39

I wonder what's using all the electric unless its the tumble dryer. What other electrical appliances did you use? Electric shower, electric oven?

Curiousmum69 · 21/02/2019 20:39

Gas

Gas sounds ok but something is eating electricity

littlemeitslyn · 21/02/2019 20:41

£60 for gas and electricity??

Curiousmum69 · 21/02/2019 20:41

Electric says the year sept 17-18 is 8753 kWh

But nov 18 to now is 3735 kWh

Can a new combi boiler do that

OP posts:
0hMyDayz · 21/02/2019 20:42

National average is 1200kwh gas so you are pretty average. How much are you paying per kWh?

dementedpixie · 21/02/2019 20:43

My annual usage from my bill is
GAS - 16522
ELECTRIC - 5519

Curiousmum69 · 21/02/2019 20:43

I'm thinking of getting a smart meter. But now I'm scared to!!

0hMyDayz · 21/02/2019 20:43

That's a lot of electricity! Make a list of all electrical appliances and how often they are being used. Did you say that you use a tumble dryer?
