This may seem a silly question but since it’s an anonymous forum I’ll ask anyway. I’ve NC.

If you ever experimented or used drugs, what did you use and what made you choose that drug? I want to have an open conversation with my teenage child about why people may use certain drugs and what situations they will come up in but I don’t have a huge amount of experience on it. I know the internet has information but would like some realistic stories from the ladies of MN.

OP posts:

Never tried anything and never been offered anything (thankfully, as I was the sort of idiot who would have bowed to peer pressure). I'm only aware of one person who smoked weed.

KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree · 20/02/2019 18:53

I had a spacecake that dh had baked once a few years ago. In fact I had 2 or 3, one after the other really quickly, and was poorly for the next few hours Grin

That's about as wild as I go, drugs wise! I don't smoke and rarely drink and hated clubbing as a teen/young adult.

Herja · 20/02/2019 18:54

Everything available. Heroin, crack, opium, speed, mdma, ketamine, acid, mushrooms, pills of any discription, weed, 2ci, 2cb, cocaine, most benzos. Probably more, I can't really remember.

I took it because I could and didn't like being aware of the world, it blocked everything out. Some of them were also just very fun. I have never been addicted to any of them, many of my friends have been. Many of my friends ( at least 2 or 3 a year since I was 16) are also dead. I haven't done anything but occasionally smoke weed in the last 8 years (a year before I was pregnant with my first DC) other than one bout of coke taking in an awful situation. Too many people were dying around me for it to seem a good idea, all either suicide or overdose, a couple just their body giving up.

londonrach · 20/02/2019 18:55

Never taken or done any drugs neither has dh. Just didnt like lack of control. Dh said the other day he wished he tried weed when he was a silly teenager. I only knew two people at school that took drugs. One died young in a terrible car accident. However i grow up in the country where we didnt have access.

ShannonRockallMalin · 20/02/2019 18:56

Meant to say also OP, I’ve been completely upfront about my past drug use with my teen DSs. I think it would be hypocritical of me to do otherwise. I know my eldest has the type of personality that will likely experiment, and I would rather he felt able to talk to me honestly about it. Although I’ve only smoked weed myself, I’ve been around enough more serious drug use to be able to give him realistic advice.

CSIblonde · 20/02/2019 18:56

Never tried anything. Smell of weed makes me heave. Drugs & not being in control scare me & back then drink was the issue for my generation. At 19 stopped eating & drank heavily for 2years after my Dad passed. Something clicked & I stopped cold one day & started to eat.

Herja · 20/02/2019 19:00

Oh. Teenage advice. I took the fun ones because all of us were, parties, clubs, friends houses. I took the worse ones and the downers, because by then life had gine wrong, my mental health was shocking and I knew enough people who used everything else to get it easily so I did.

So just pick your friends wisely I guess. Not that I blame them, I made my own choices, but my friends were what enabled me to make them.

Aquamarine1029 · 20/02/2019 19:00

Tried weed 3 times in my late teens, did nothing for me. I've never tried any other drug, aside from alcohol, and I never will.

room32 · 20/02/2019 19:01

Just weed for me, I prefer it to alcohol and if it weren't for pregnancy would still be using. Hoping to see it legalised in my lifetime!

GregoryPeckingDuck · 20/02/2019 19:02

Tried weed with a friend once (Amsterdam so legal) but that’s it. I don’t see the point in breaking the law and potentially facing consequences for a high especially when it’s not as good as other things.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 20/02/2019 19:02

Obviously I get that some people do it as an escape but my life is fine so that’s not an issue for me.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 20/02/2019 19:03

Not much of a drinker either. I don’t like wasting my time except on mn

maddiemookins16mum · 20/02/2019 19:04

Smoked a joint in Goa once, it was vile. Have never tried anything else ever.

Courchevel · 20/02/2019 19:07

I tried weed once on holiday, but nothing else.
None of my friends did drugs much either (very sporty Uni and then I was in the armed forces).
This thread is fascinating though!

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 20/02/2019 19:09

I used to do ecstasy a bit in my twenties. I had a fucking great time if I'm honest.

But after a while I got a bit bored of it and realised that it wasn't "real" if you see what I mean and am just not interested now.

However I do have some very fun memories.

SkaterGrrrrl · 20/02/2019 19:09

Gosh loads. Heavy weed smoker from age of 21 to age of about 30 ( pre DC)

Coke at parties and clubs. It gives you fake confidence but it turns you into an arrogant, selfish a$$hole. Seems to appeal to people with low self esteem. It's not pretty.

Acid - 3 or 4 times. I had a beautiful time but I have huge respect for acid, it's powerful. Only take it with very close friends you trust and somewhere peaceful and safe, like in nature or at home.

Ecstacy - some of the most incredible experiences of my life. Feeling at one with music, close to my friends, open with strangers. Pure feeling of joy, love and belonging. It removes the psychological wall between you and other people. It is heaven. But. What goes up must come down. You will feel terrible for a couple of days afterwards.

Shrooms: see acid above.

I'm now in my early 40s and a boring responsible parent with a good job. About twice anyway at a party or a gig I'll have a joint. I am a light weight now!

I know a lot of people who experimented with drugs and walked away happily with nothing worse to show for it but a taste for psy trance. I am aware we are probably very lucky.

Lweji · 20/02/2019 19:09

No drugs or even smoking. Hardly any alcohol and not more than 2-3 expressos a day (often just one equivalent).

Never felt curious or pressured.
And I don't need alcohol to take any edge, relax or have fun.

Lweji · 20/02/2019 19:12

Oh, forgot. Just pethidine for ds's birth. It was kind of weird but it didn't feel like a drug.

Codeine seems to make me feel a bit sick and I stopped taking it even as co-codamol for periods.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 20/02/2019 19:16

I was awful in my early 20s; coke, pills, mdma, ketamine, 2CB, MCAT (to which i was pretty addicted for a time) pretty much anything that was around at the time.
Looking back i can see i was struggling with depression, stress and anxiety and this was my escape. I regret it not only for the fact it is dangerous and expensive (i am still in debt going in to thousands) but also because it set my career back years.
I've had several relapses but been properly clean for a few years now at 32 and my career is going off so fast i just hate to think where i could have been if my brain wasnt mush for 7 years Confused

TheDarkPassenger · 20/02/2019 19:16

Did a fair amount of drugs as a late teen. Enjoyed almost all. Smoked weed til I was about 25 and found out I was pregnant with third child. Drank alcohol a lot (few glasses at night, good whack on weekend)

Been alcohol sober for 2 months now and won’t be going back to it, I’ve discovered I have wayyyyyy more fun without it!!
Probably won’t smoke weed again, my mental health is finally stabilised.
Quit smoking about 4 months ago. Feel amazing. Do vape though but not as often anymore.
Have approx. 1 cup of tea a day and never coffee or energy drinks.
Don’t eat dairy or gluten.

Sounds boring but I feel on top the world, most of the time.

DragonMamma · 20/02/2019 19:19

I’ve a pretty chequered drug past but I stayed off the hard stuff. I was just a party girl.

So, weed, speed, pills/MDMA, coke, ket (a favourite of mine for ages), acid, mushrooms, GHB. Benzos to come down. I dabbled with 2ci but I had the worst night of my life on it so shelved that.

I agree with whoever said avoiding acid or shrooms unless you’re outside, where it doesn’t matter that things are moving, as they are supposed to be. Being inside watching the walls breathe is scary as fuck for the uninitiated. Ditto to having somebody you trust implicitly to talk you down. Acid is the one drug that I’d avoid now - I’ve seen it totally change somebody after a bad trip.

fourquenelles · 20/02/2019 19:20

Back in the 70s I smoked pot a couple of times as it was present at parties in my flat share. Speed was also available but I never wanted to try it as I was petrified of having a heart attack. Pot didn't do anything for me.

I used to live in a town with a lot of trades people working cash in hand so lots of money available for drugs like coke. I had a line of coke about 5 years ago just to see what it was like. Apart from fantastic bogies for 3 days it did nothing for me that I couldn't achieve by having a gin and tonic.

I wouldn't touch anything else with a barge pole. My mum was a Sister on ICU so I heard many drug related horror stories.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 20/02/2019 19:24

Tried weed once when I was 17, was at a party and was offered it. Didn't like it! Just got uncontrollable giggles!

Got with OH 6 years ago who had always been a regular coke user. Must have been together around 3 months before he offered it to me. We used to do it weekly, which we cut down to monthly after DS was born. Unfortunately it ramped up slowly till it was twice or three times a week some weeks. It's no way to live. I was on a constant downer. Weaning myself off it now, down to every other week at the moment but I feel the end is in sight. It's taken over 6 years of my life.

NameChangeNugget · 20/02/2019 19:25

Ecstasy back in the day.

Chickenwing · 20/02/2019 19:32

I took extacy aged 17-22 just occasionally/on weekends at parties or nights out. Tried meow meow, speed and coke but didnt enjoy it as much.

At the time I took this as other friends were as well(so it seemed safe and normal) plus it was exciting and a good feeling. Seems really stupid to me now considering potential death.

I don't smoke weed but believe it's less harmful than cigarettes or alcohol and shouldn't be illegal.
