This may seem a silly question but since it’s an anonymous forum I’ll ask anyway. I’ve NC.

If you ever experimented or used drugs, what did you use and what made you choose that drug? I want to have an open conversation with my teenage child about why people may use certain drugs and what situations they will come up in but I don’t have a huge amount of experience on it. I know the internet has information but would like some realistic stories from the ladies of MN.

Spent most of my teens doing acid and speed. I only ever had fantastic acid experiences. Spent 20s and 30s recreationally doing coke and tried ket, ecstasy, weed (not a fan). Never tried heroin or crack.

I did drugs because they’re hugely fun. Nothing beats bonding with friends all night having an adventure together then watching the sunrise together all happy and content and feeling the world is full of possibility. I don’t know anyone who I spent those times with that went on to have a drugs or mental health problem. We’re all pretty unscathed.

I stopped because I was getting older, had a child etc. and the health implications started to worry me.

Never taken any form of ilłegal drug
Used to drink a bit but dint really do that either anymore. Smoked about 5 cigarettes in my whole life
Just doesn’t appeal

MsMamaNature · 21/02/2019 19:57

Dabbled with heroin and ketamine on and off for just over 2 years. No needles. Never addicted. Stopped when I got bored. Only 1 friend became addicted but she becomes addicted to practically everything she tries - exercise, food, alcohol, etc. Some people are more predisposed to addiction than others.

@ASauvignonADay whoops!! Must have had something else on the brain 😂😂

MaggieAndHopey · 21/02/2019 21:10

Any former psychonauts read the new Michael Pollan book, How To Change Your Mind? Very interesting. There's a lot of work being done here and in America about the therapeutic properties of psychedelics (particularly psilocybin) for people with drug resistant depression, PTSD, addiction issues and more. One or two states in the US are considering legalising mushrooms again.

Smoked cigarettes from 13, tried weed at 19. Pills from 1994-1996, and then coke at 30.

I still have the odd coke fest, but only about once a year.

I'm going to 90's Fest in April and debating whether to get a couple of pills for me and dh...

KaleidoscopeEyes · 21/02/2019 23:36

Weirdly I've never had trips, as much as I love drugs, I hate the idea of hallucinating.

MrsKoala · 22/02/2019 08:01

Out of my peer group from school - probably about 50 people I grew up with - all of them did coke at parties. None have become addicted. I can't comment on heroin or crack as I only know one person who tried crack and I don't think I know anyone who has tried heroin. (the one person who tried crack also didn't become addicted). All are now in their 40s and living very mundane middle class lives. Even some of my parents friends in their 60s do the odd line at parties.

I don't know how you could afford to get addicted to cocaine. It was £80 a gram 25 years ago when I was earning 7k a year!

MrsKoala · 22/02/2019 08:06

I should have added that out of that number the majority are male, and of those about 20 became the most boring potheads in their late teens and 20s. A few are full blown alcoholics.

Steeve · 25/02/2019 19:40

It often makes me wonder how many people abuse prescription drugs, and how many health professionals have no idea their patients are doing so.

nrpmum · 25/02/2019 19:42

Weed, speed, ketamine, cocaine, pills. All party related between 18 and 22. Stopped because I grew up.

Deadposhtory · 25/02/2019 20:04

Opioids pills and cocaine, both of which I love but very rarely now

dairymilkmonster · 25/02/2019 20:16

never tried anything illegal/recreational

FilthyforFirth · 12/07/2025 17:20

Nothing, not even a cigarette. Drugs never appealed to me and thankfully nor my friends/boyfriends. Why take the risk of randomly dying or getting addicted? I am 40 and Leah Betts was everywhere and scared the hell out of me.

Mimilamore · 12/07/2025 17:40

Weed now and then my teens/ twenties. LSD once, speed once… bloody hated it… so never again. I think I like to be in control…

ClusterFukt · 12/07/2025 20:19

How on earth has this been dug up from 6 years ago?

IwasDueANameChange · 12/07/2025 20:24

I had a few drags on someone's joint (weed) at a student party. It just made me giggly. I had cigarettes offered by others a handful of times, purely socially.Never remotely interested in drugs.

I drink alcohol in moderation - typically its a nice glass of wine with a meal.

IwasDueANameChange · 12/07/2025 20:27

Nothing beats bonding with friends all night having an adventure together then watching the sunrise together all happy and content and feeling the world is full of possibility

I've never needed drugs to do this. I am generally a happy and content person. I wake up most mornings feeling the world is full of possibility.

I often think the issue is when people need drugs to get to that. You shouldn't need it.

Oblomov19 · 13/07/2025 08:28

I have tried to talk to ds's but neither are at all interested. Maybe because they are aware of health, have always played football, gone to the gym, ran 5K with their friends.

I have a very relaxed view of it, mainly based on it NOT being that bad, (apart from the horrible side of the whole drug industry itself obviously), in that most people who don't have very strong addictive personalities, can try something, at least once, and don't have to worry that it will necessarily lead to addiction.

I tried a few things whilst at uni, only a bit, a few minor things, a few different things, some only once. I tried to talk to ds's about it, but both are nonchalant, totally non interested. Ds1 nearly finishing uni, says most people he knows have fun, but don't rely on drugs or alcohol to do so. They do share beautiful experiences, eg pp watching the sun rise. But they seem to do it au-naturale, eg staying up chatting, to see sunrise, running down the beach in Florida ...
