To think some people don’t get that working nights mean you need sleep during the day

Started a job working three nights a week from 8pm till 8pm. I then go home have something to eat and go the bed till about 2-3ish.
The amount of people who have said stuff to me like
Can you have my kids during the day in the holidays since you are working nights
We can meet up on such and such a day since you are working during the night
And a couple of people try to ring me for chats after a night shift even though I have told them I am asleep.
My MiL told my DH who is a teacher so off during the holidays that he will be able to help them re decorate the kitchen and living room and hall over half term as I will be in each day with DS
The final straw is that I have found out today the neighbours have told the postman that I will be in all day to receive their parcels
Don’t people get you may be working nights but you still need sleep at some point
Does anyone else have this problem

Night work is shit, its shit for the worker and it’s shit for the family who live half a life around it

Herculesfan Its shit because your husband is taking the piss.

@WeeDangerousSpike yup. North East England. Completely illegal but that's hotel life with a shite boss. Very, very common in hotels. If you complain, senior management usually just said that they've all had to do it in the past so why shouldn't you! It's an endless circle

We used to do the quick changeover. Police also. Used to be 6am finish. Back at 2pm for lates. This was after 7 night shifts. This changed as I joined the organisation so I only ever had to do the 7 night shifts in a row. 10pm-7am.

I still do nights but only 2 at a time. I have blackout blinds, doors shut etc but the sleep quality is not the same. Just coming to the end of my first night shift of the set - I am desperate to get home, fill up my hot water bottles and snuggle up on bed. I just hope I manage to sleep past midday as I can never go back to sleep once I am awake.

@Biancadelrioisback

Sadly, absolutely spot on ime, not to mention the non existent health and safety and the buck passing if something goes wrong. As long as the profit rolls in they don't really care how.

That's right, those shifts and gaps aren't legal. No catering isn't exempt - see PP, even the police aren't exempt. Tourism can be if its high season, but you should still get your breaks at some point, even if they are carried over. That's more complicated and would probably need a call to acas so you can set out your exact circumstances and know where you stand.

You can opt out of the bit that restricts your number of hours per week, but not the bit on rest periods.

Here's the link to the gov website www.gov.uk/rest-breaks-work

I assume they don’t do it now but I don’t know

My friend is Met Alexa- his particular team works 2,2,2 (earlies, lates, nights) and the last night shift leads into his days off (4s, sometimes 3s). So they don't have to do a quick changeover any more BUT that first day is counted as one of their days off, despite the fact that they'll be sleeping...

My husband doesn't 'get it' either. He thinks after a 12/13 hour night shift I can just come home, do the washing up, iron uniforms sort the tea out etc... Will happily take the car to work because I'll be "too tired to drive" though. Arsehole.

@biancadelrioisback I remember working 14 hours straight at a 5* hoyel, kipping 4 hours in the reception back room then back to work. One of the guests was all like 'haha do you not have a home to go to?!' and I nearly cried. Hotel shifts suuuuuuck.
