Can you have a period three years post menopause?

NC in case I'm being silly, and shamelessly posting in AIBU for traffic.

On Sunday I started with period pains/cramping. Since then I've had quite a bit of discharge, but white, not smelly, not frothy. Now I'm bleeding - not buckets but a lot more than spotting.

Everything I've read says post menopausal bleeding needs a doctor, but this just seems like a (very late) period. Can that happen?

I'm currently talking myself out of making an appointment, not through fear, but because it all seems so...normal.

A late period is more like three months, not three years. Go and see your GP and get yourself checked out.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 19/02/2019 20:03

If it's 3 years since your last period, it is best to get it checked out be a GP and not sone untrained randoms ont'internet

mateysmum · 19/02/2019 20:05

You need to see the doc asap. A gap of 3 years is not usual. Get yourself checked out.

justasking111 · 19/02/2019 20:07

As the others have said get checked out. A colleague at work had this they took it very seriously she was seen and checked out by the consultant inside a month. Thankfully all was ok.

DowntonCrabby · 19/02/2019 20:11

Even if it feels normal because it feel like the process of going through your period like back in the day you:

ABSOLUTELY MUST BOOK A GP APP ASAP.

Seriously, no one can diagnose here, just please book and fingers crossed everything will be fine but you won’t know for sure until you get checked.

Good luck FlowersFlowersFlowers

MunchyMunchkin · 19/02/2019 20:13

Please see your gp. This needs investigating ASAP but is still likely to turn out to be nothing.

weegiemum · 19/02/2019 20:25

GP sitting here beside me. Make an urgent appointment!

Disfordarkchocolate · 19/02/2019 20:27

GP appointment needed for all post-menopausal bleeding. Go as soon as you can because it can be serious. Take care.

LiverpoolareplayingBayern · 19/02/2019 20:28

Thanks all. The objective me knows I have to make an appointment. But the 'it'll sort itself out' me was winning.

I thought I'd get a kicking and you've obliged Grin. The appointment will be made.

Get checked out OP.

Hodgehegg · 19/02/2019 20:29

Cross posted! Hope it all goes well.

ForTheLoveOfDoughnuts · 19/02/2019 20:32

Definitely get checked.

Chloemol · 19/02/2019 20:51

I had the same, went to dr immediately. Tests etc, lucky it was just a cyst on my ovary causing issues. But you need to go to the drs it’s not normal

Osirus · 19/02/2019 23:49

This happened to a work colleague and she ignored it. She had cervical cancer which eventually took her life. You must take this seriously.

Not saying you have CV or any cancer. But don’t let it lie.

Murinae · 19/02/2019 23:57

Any bleeding after a year of no bleeding should be checked out by GP. I had this and was sent for a scan and everything was fine but best to get it checked out.

Bluerussian · 20/02/2019 00:01

Go to your GP as soon as you can. It probably means nothing, such things do happen occasionally, a friend of mine had it after couple of years and there was nothing wrong, but better safe than sorry. I'm sure you'll be fine Flowers. Let us know how you get on.

funnelfanjo · 20/02/2019 00:12

I had bleeding like irregular light periods 18 months after my last period, plus a bit of light discharge, and was fast tracked to the gynaecologist as the practice nurse who examined me saw something not right but wasn’t sure what it was. It turned out my cervix had both a cyst and a polyp lurking on there. Both were removed and biopsied and fine, also had a precautionary scan of uterus and ovaries which was all clear.

God bless the NHS.

Make the appointment in the morning OP. Odds are it’s something benign, but you need it checked out. Don’t make us nag you!

Itscoldouthere · 20/02/2019 00:18

Yes get it checked, I had some issues and the last time I saw my consultant he said any post menopausal bleeding should be checked out just incase.

SleepWarrior · 20/02/2019 00:51

Definitely get it checked out. You may be fast tracked for investigation. If this happens then don't panic and assume they think you have cancer - it's just protocol for certain symptoms.

agnurse · 20/02/2019 04:10

This is term postmenopausal bleeding and ALWAYS needs to be investigated. Sadly, endometrial cancer (cancer of the lining of the uterus) is the most common reproductive malignancy among women, and often causes postmenopausal bleeding. Obviously that's not the only cause, but definitely do not put off seeing your provider.

DailyBaileys · 20/02/2019 08:10

GP, ASAP, please!
I see you've posted that the appt will be made--
--please come back and let us know when it has been made!
Don't put it off... 'kay?

Not wanting to scare you, but want to be sure you get it checked.

LiverpoolareplayingBayern · 21/02/2019 10:43

Update:

Saw the GP this morning. I'll be having appointments for an ultrasound scan and with the gynaecologist within two weeks to rule out anything serious.

Thank you all again for telling me how it is. Even in the waiting room there was a bit of me thinking this is just a blip, nothing to worry about, what am I doing here! Then I thought of MN and got over myself Grin

TheFirstOHN · 21/02/2019 10:51

Good, I'm glad you went.

mateysmum · 21/02/2019 10:54

Well done. I hope the appointments all go well. Great that your follow up appointments will be soon. Less time to think about things.

The power of mumsnet . Sometimes we all just need to be told to get a grip and get on with it, even if it is just a bunch of opinionated vipers!

Itscoldouthere · 21/02/2019 11:50

Well done Liverpool I ignored something for ages (years) and it played on the back of my mind. Finally sorted it out last year, I did have a cyst but it shrank on its own, but my gynaecologist has been really firm with me about taking any signs as serious as he is also the gynae cancer specialist at our local hospital.
