Can you have a period three years post menopause?

NC in case I'm being silly, and shamelessly posting in AIBU for traffic.

On Sunday I started with period pains/cramping. Since then I've had quite a bit of discharge, but white, not smelly, not frothy. Now I'm bleeding - not buckets but a lot more than spotting.

Everything I've read says post menopausal bleeding needs a doctor, but this just seems like a (very late) period. Can that happen?

I'm currently talking myself out of making an appointment, not through fear, but because it all seems so...normal.

Well done OP for being sensible about it - fingers crossed it turns out to be okay.

Quick public service announcement for any lurkers - you are deemed to be officially "menopausal" 12 months and onwards after your last period. Any bleeding after this needs a trip to the GP and further investigation.

I'm glad you are getting it checked straight away. My mother ignored for about three months and it turned out to be endometrial cancer so I'm really glad she didn't leave it any longer. She is fine now though (15 years later).

I was like you. In fact I didn't even make an appointment, just mentioned in passing at the doctor's for something unrelated that I'd had a period after 2 years it was more of a whinge. I was fast tracked through some gynaecologist appointments. All was fine, but the speed of the appointments coming through showed me how seriously they take this. Well done for making the appointment. Hoping you get the all clear too.

Sometimes we all just need to be told to get a grip and get on with it, even if it is just a bunch of opinionated vipers!

And fortunately I knew just where to find some!

This is the NHS at its best. I had some post meno bleeding and the speed with which I was seen by a specialist was breathtaking. Mine was nothing to worry about, but gosh they do take this seriously! Fingers crossed for good news for you.

OP

Exactly the same happened to me. Got sent for an ultrasound. They found an ovarian cyst. Nothing to worry about, but just to emphasise it's better to get it checked out, and you are NOT over-reacting.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 21/02/2019 19:17

Thank you all again for telling me how it is. Even in the waiting room there was a bit of me thinking this is just a blip, nothing to worry about, what am I doing here! Then I thought of MN and got over myself you weren't really considering coming back and telling us you didn't go for the appointment were you? ShockGrin

Petalflowers · 21/02/2019 19:22

I was going to echo everyone else and say go to the gp, and then saw you have and been and have been referred. Well done.

marylou1977 · 21/02/2019 19:45

I’m glad you are getting it checked. I had postmenopausal very light bleeding and it still turned out to be uterine cancer. During the operation unsuspected ovarian cancer was found. That postmenopausal bleeding and follow up saved my life.

LiverpoolareplayingBayern · 22/02/2019 11:29

Well, they don't hang about! Letter has just arrived, gynae appointment is next Thursday morning (28th).

marylou I'm glad you didn't do what I was going to do and ignore it, and I'm glad you're still here to tell your story.

I've been thinking - I really hope that if any woman in future is googling post menopausal bleeding, this thread might come up. It's a wake up call.

That's excellent service from the NHS. The odds are everything will be fine but best to find out sooner rather than later.

Try not to worry too much (easy for me to say, I know). Probably just a polyp or something.

LiverpoolareplayingBayern · 22/02/2019 12:57

OHN

I'm honestly not worrying, I'm still convinced it's nothing but I'm glad it's being checked out. I'm going to get a heck of a shock if it does turn out to be serious.

Hi OP.
I've been thinking about you and hoping the appointment went ok.

How are you?
