Walking directions from Oxford Circus tube. Can anyone help ?

I need to walk from Oxford Circus underground to Harley Street tomorrow. I don’t know why but I can’t follow directions from maps or instructions like ‘Head south towards ..... ‘ I have problems navigating that seem to go way beyond just a regular sense of direction.

Please can anyone help me out with some really simple, literal instructions that include landmarks ( eg shop names, Street names, turn left, turn right etc? )Last time I did it I had google maps and city mapper and STILL ended up totally disorientated and getting in a taxi in desperation which is crazy because I know Oxford Circus tube is really near Harley Street.

I can’t find instructions that are literal enough for me to interpret and relate to where I’m actually standing. Whether I went out the wrong exit of the station last time I’m not sure but I was totally flummoxed. Thanks to anyone who can help.

I find the best thing (for me anyway) is to look on google maps streetview first and 'walk' through the route on there, taking note yourself of landmarks and shops along the way. Then allow a bit of faff time on the day so you're not stressed and in a hurry and potentially missing things

Once you're on Oxford Street, head go John Lewis. It's on the same side of the road as the H&M if you're at the crossroads. Go round the back of John Lewis and you'll find some traffic lights opposite the entrance to the food hall (there are lots of flowers immediately inside the door). Cross over and walk straight (I think you have to walk under some building work at the moment) and then. You'll be walking up one side of a square with a garden in the middle and an NCP carpark underneath. These will be on your right. Cross over again (so you're still going straight with John Lewis behind you). You should be at the bottom of Harley Street with Wigmore Street going off to the left. There's a building on the corner which is 1-7 Harley Street. If you look left you should see an Italian restaurant a few doors down.

I hope that helps! I spend a lot of time in the area...

Sorry for random words here and there. I kept going back to add more detail and didn't proof read!

Loopytiles · 19/02/2019 15:41

I used to have this problem and resolved it by practising in advance with the settings on one of the apps so that I have the view that means can see where I’m going on screen.

Switch on location services on the phone!

Or get tube!

Loopytiles · 19/02/2019 15:42

Yes, important to find right exit, so research that too.

AntiStuff · 19/02/2019 15:43

Firstly work out whether you'd be better off getting off at Regents Park. So what number Harley Street are you visiting? It's a relatively long street!

If Oxford Circus is definitely the closest, come out of exit 5, you will be opposite Top Shop. Cross diagonally over Oxford Circus to H&M. Look to your right (if facing the shop), up Regent Street, can you see a dome roofed building? That's the BBC, walk in that direction and keep walking, past the Langham Hotel opposite the Beeb. Then turn left down New Cavendish Street when you get to it, then just walk until you get to where Harley St crosses New Cavendish St. It's all fairly grid like round there, so tricky to get lost. Or just ask someone!

Hi op.
Come out of Oxford Circus station on the oxford street exit. Take a sec and find topshop - it should beacross the road. You need to cross over to that side but you’re heading to the left of it - you want to turn right up by the nike store onto regent street.
Head on up there but cross over onto the left hand side. You’ll come to an all bar one - take a left onto Margaret street.
Keep going straight forwards and you’ll reach cavendish square. You’re really close now! The road sort of branches round in a circle and you want to keep going round to the right. That leads you to the bottom of Harley street
Is that helpful?!

RiverTam · 19/02/2019 15:44

you will want to exit from Oxford Circus tube to Oxford Street West side or Regent Street North side.

bingoitsadingo · 19/02/2019 15:45

Oxford circus tube station is on a big crossroads between oxford street and regent street.
Two of the corner shops on this cross roads are topshop and H&M - these are on the North side of Oxford street.
So when you come out the tube station, look for these two shops.
You need to walk up Regent street with H&M on your left and Topshop on your right.
Take the third left (cavendish place)
There will be a garden on your left (cavendish square gardens) - when you reach the end of this, turn right and you're at the bottom of harley street.

I suggest "walking" it on google maps first so you can get a feel for the landmarks beforehand

WhatwouldRuthdo · 19/02/2019 15:45

If you are worried, take the most straightforward route rather than the shortest. It will only add a minute or two. Come out of Oxford Circus aiming for the Regent Street North exit. Pass University of Westminster building on your left and take the next left turning. Harley Street will be your second or third right.

thebunnies · 19/02/2019 15:46

Only thing I’d add is its easiest if you take the exit from the tube station that comes out on the north side of oxford street. There’s one just outside Niketown (which is directly across the road from H&M) and one outside H&M. Then the directions from H&M to Harley St from @mynameis are perfect. My sense of direction is terrible too!

Dudleydunstable · 19/02/2019 15:46

Thank Everyone. I meant to post in chat not Aibu. I can’t even navigate a bloody website today!

MynameisCalypso thanks so much. This is just what I need. When I come out the underground should I be able to see H&M if I use the right exit?

NicoAndTheNiners · 19/02/2019 15:46

Ok, come out the tube and stand on oxford st. Regent st is the other big street which crosses oxford street and you need to head up regent street. The side of the big Nike shop will be on your right.

Keep going, second street on your left is Margaret street, turn left and head along Margaret street.

You will get to some gardens on your right. (Cavendish square). You need to take the street on the right immediatly after the gardens and that's Harley street.

I've never walked there but that's what I would say from looking at google maps.

Walking directions from Oxford Circus tube. Can anyone help ?
mynameiscalypso · 19/02/2019 15:47

I think my route is indicative of the fact that I'm usually always early for appointments so spend a lot of time browsing in John Lewis while I'm waiting 😂

mynameiscalypso · 19/02/2019 15:49

@Dudleydunstable I think you'll be able to see it from almost all the exits. Although Oxford Circus has a few, they're all generally in the same place. If it helps, I normally come up from the tube, go through the gates and turn left immediately and walk up the stairs. There's a key cutting place at the bottom. H&M will be on the opposite side of the road to your left.

Dudleydunstable · 19/02/2019 15:49

It’s 10 Harley Street I’m going to. You are all so helpful (thanks for not taking the piss too) I’m going to read through all the replies and write out directions using them.

I'm trying to highlight the route!

Walking directions from Oxford Circus tube. Can anyone help ?
mynameiscalypso · 19/02/2019 15:51

I've been to 10 Harley Street lots of times, once you're at the bottom of Harley Street, it's the second door on the left so not far to go at all.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 19/02/2019 15:51

You can also 'walk' through the area on Google maps before getting there too. So you'll be able to spot signposts and shop fronts and the like.

(I do this a lot when driving somewhere knew; even with signposts. I need to 'see' where I'm going, so I know what to look out for if that makes sense.)

Dudleydunstable · 19/02/2019 15:55

Greenfingers I’ll try do a Walking rehearsal on google maps in a bit. I tried it on arrival last time and everythIng seemed to go pear shaped immediately and I couldn’t work out whether I needed to turn left, right, where to cross the road etc.

If I get flustered/lost I just hail a cab !

Dudleydunstable · 19/02/2019 16:04

Humpty that’s what I ended up doing last time, but I’d really like to be able to walk it this time so I don’t feel that I’m giving in to this problem on every occasion. And I feel this should be a do-able challenge 🤞🏻.

OP posts:
Bagpuss5 · 19/02/2019 16:07

Can you use google earth, then you can see which shops are where.
I know when walking that distances seem magnified and much of the time you feel panic in case it's the wrong direction. But shop names are useful, street names are too far apart.

Nydj · 19/02/2019 16:07

You could ask for directions if you get lost on the day - most people are helpful

Kedgeree · 19/02/2019 16:12

Number 10 is at the Cavendish Square end, so once you cross Cavendish Square you're just a minute or two away. (I go to number 4).
