To box my egg pram up to avoid airline damage?

SenoraSurf · 18/02/2019 20:35

We are going to Spain from UK with easyJet when DC1 will be 5 weeks old. We will be taking our beautifully stunning and expensive egg stroller with us. I have read online that you can take it free of charge and it will be put in the hold but naturally, I'm really worried about potential damage.
Would it be ok to box it up and check it in properly when we get to the airport? would I have to pay to do this?

Any experience or advice would be gratefully received!

Before anybody suggests it, getting a cheap one to take is not an option I would like to explore.

Thanks

I’ve just noticed on the 12th feb you called yourself a tight arse OP and that your mum was buying this to now, a week later, asking how you’ll parcel up a pram when you’re not actually due till August?

My son was born in August and we didn’t even think about pushchairs till about June! It’s february!!

This thread is ridiculous!

sulflower · 20/02/2019 14:45

you’re not actually due till August?

Shock I didn't read that bit. Long time until August to be worrying about a fancy pram.

@leasedaudi

I don't like spending money when it's not necessary either. But as I wanted a complete set with car seat it's the one thing I got new.

I tried loads and fell for a cosatto. I then spent a while searching the internet till I found a shop in Milton Keynes who ships and spent £250 on the whole kit (frame, carry cit, pushchair, car seat, changing bag) 18 months later and still going strong

noseyparker1 · 20/02/2019 17:28

Just wondering why you're flying easyJet - I would be more embarrassed about that than a cheap buggy!

pollymere · 20/02/2019 17:43

I've had friends never see their pram again. You'll need a sling or carrier for the plane anyway.

Rosettarose0808 · 20/02/2019 17:49

Is this a bit of a laugh you asking for advice from experienced parents and then ignoring their advice and experience?!? We traveled with our 6 weeks old baby and took our cheaper lie down buggy and it was great plus a sling...still worked ok the baby survived and so did we.

bubblegumunicorn · 20/02/2019 18:13

I wouldnt risk it when we were waiting for our luggage the last time we flew a family picked there buggy off the conveyor belt and it was missing a wheel Complete nightmare situation really!

Barrenfieldoffucks · 20/02/2019 18:19

Honestly, we flew a few weeks ago and took a Maclaren XT or whatever the marginally more flashy ones are, which lie flat and fold small. Perfect tbh. Great for carrying stuff through the airport etc while toddler was in a sling, but went flat in case he slept.

At 5 wks a newborn is unlikely to want to be put down during meals etc, so I would very much recommend a sling.

Fifflefaffle · 20/02/2019 18:26

I would get a cheap one.
I used to work at Heathrow (on tarmac level) and was a regular sight to see suitcases dumped near pur stock room and ramp agents chucking stuff about. It's really neither here nor there to them how much something cost. I understand you want your baby to be in a lovely stroller but it's probably not worth the risk.

onegiftedgal · 20/02/2019 18:28

Better to have spent your money on a better class of airline than an expensive pram 😉 Can you not use a sling for the flight and then ask your family in Spain to provide/borrow for you all of the equipment that you need? Also as another poster mentioned - co sleep so that you don't need a cot.
Don't trust Easyjet with anything.

stellavisionandunderstanding · 20/02/2019 18:35

We had a quinny pram and I bought a travel case for it. Absolutely wrecked by the airlines. I feel the case may give a false a sense of security! Will now stick to our yo-yo. Was gutted

OJZJ · 20/02/2019 18:36

As previous people have said the frames are going to be bashed around and bent as much as scratched, nor worth it on something you are spending so much money on. If you are visiting family over there, you are likely to visit more than once with this baby and subsequent children so why not get a sling then either see if a relative can lend you one over there or buy a cheaper one that can be stored in a relatives loft esp for your visits. and in the nicest possible way, if you are so much of a snob you just want to show off your expensive pram then take a bloody picture to show people if its that important to you

Jonas14 · 20/02/2019 18:43

My expensive Icandy pram got damaged by easyjet. So badly, we were stranded at the airport with a baby and no pram. A couple saw our pain and lent us at 40€ buggy, it was the worst and ugliest buggy ever, but we were so grateful. I ended up getting 50% of the value back and that took seven months. Don’t wreck your pram. Our relatives in Europe always rally around and lend us cots, car seats etc.

MadameDD · 20/02/2019 18:44

Not all Spanish people are as vapid as OP - I used to work with a lovely Spanish woman who would have been appalled at designer gear for her baby! But the Spanish shoe shoe shop near where we worked they were all about image - including rabbit fur bobble hats etc. That shop has closed down now and they’ve gone back to Spain, whether Brexit related I don’t know.

fatimashortbread · 20/02/2019 18:50

Last trip to USA, the airline lost the expensive buggy on the way out and the cheap Walmart one, we had to buy as a result, on the way back!

SuspiciouslyMinded · 20/02/2019 18:54

Some people have really weird parenting priorities.

DameFanny · 20/02/2019 19:01

OP, I freely admit I have no interest in luxury prams these days but just wanted to highlight this -

I admit I like nice things and am fortunate than I can work hard enough to buy the things I like hmm each to there own.

Can we please stop collectively pretending there's any direct relationship between hard work and remuneration? You're lucky enough to work in an industry where hard work pays more than minimum wage - it's really not the same thing

MarvellousMonsters · 20/02/2019 19:03

Get a nice sling*, not only is it easy to carry your baby in the airport but also easier when on holiday, if you’re going to beaches or on bumpy pavements. Easy to feed in, baby stays settled because they are close to you, it’s a win win all around.

  • not a baby bjorn type carrier, a ring sling or maybe an ergo type soft carrier.
leasedaudi · 20/02/2019 19:03

@DameFanny read her last thread, she didn't pay for the pram anyway!

Knittedfairies · 20/02/2019 19:07

OP, box up the fancy pram and pay the excess. Don't bother to come back to tell us it was ruined on the flight though.
One of my husband's colleagues 'lost' a car seat on a transatlantic flight; it crossed the ocean a few times before disappearing into thin air.
Be warned.

DameFanny · 20/02/2019 19:11

Heh @leasedaudi

It's always the people with the most privilege Insisting that all you need is hard work...

user1482956724 · 20/02/2019 19:14

Can I just ask what's so special about an egg pram that warrants that price tag? Maybe I'm just old and past it, but no way can I see what justifies that price tag.

At 5 weeks the baby wont care less in what it sleeps, thankfully they are blissfully unaware just how status symbol orientated their mother is.

ZenNudist · 20/02/2019 19:26

Recommend buying a baby jogger city mini. They aren't cheap but they fold away so easily. You can push to the gate, pick it uo by its handle it collapses and you are good to go. Lie flat so useable from birth.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/02/2019 19:42

The baggage handlers are airport staff - I assume you get whoever the airport sends, rather than different airlines having different handlers - in which case, travelling with a more expensive airline won’t mean a better chance of the pram arriving unscathed, will it?
