To box my egg pram up to avoid airline damage?

SenoraSurf · 18/02/2019 20:35

We are going to Spain from UK with easyJet when DC1 will be 5 weeks old. We will be taking our beautifully stunning and expensive egg stroller with us. I have read online that you can take it free of charge and it will be put in the hold but naturally, I'm really worried about potential damage.
Would it be ok to box it up and check it in properly when we get to the airport? would I have to pay to do this?

Any experience or advice would be gratefully received!

Before anybody suggests it, getting a cheap one to take is not an option I would like to explore.

Thanks

I’ve just googled egg pram and I’m struggling to see the difference between that and any other forward facing pram... What’s so special about it that you NEED it for a 2 week holiday?

EyUpOurKid · 19/02/2019 14:05

Just as an aside, I'm glad you've sorted mentally what you intend to do re:egg, which, bad idea IMHO, but your look out. Although you do sound patronising, you'll look back on this and laugh at yourself.

Have you a contingency plan in case you have a section? There's no way you'll be able to carry a baby, luggage - - boxed up egg-- etc by yourself.

Darkstar4855 · 19/02/2019 14:08

Vain about a pram? Why?! Surely no one actually cares what pram anyone else has so why would it matter?

This. My Graco cost £100 second hand and does the job fine. I could afford a £1K pram but couldn’t for the life of me see the point!

RomaineCalm · 19/02/2019 14:37

I am picturing all of the people in the Mothercare web team scratching their heads and wondering about the surge in interest in Egg prams. Grin

Purpletigers · 19/02/2019 14:40

I’d take my expensive pram. You don’t want your family thinking you’re a pauper . It’s very important to push the correct pram at all times . If it gets damaged just buy another one .

Purpletigers · 19/02/2019 14:42

Has the baby not even been born yet ? How do you know you will both be fit to fly so soon after birth .i think you’re getting rather ahead of yourself . Not everything in life goes to plan .

drspouse · 19/02/2019 14:52

I am not well off enough to purchase a second stroller that I like enough to leave there
Why does it matter if you like it?

You can get an umbrella stroller from about €50 from Corte Ingles and much less from a hypermarket I imagine.
If you don't like it, give it to a refugee organisation when you leave. With such little use, they will be grateful.

BadLad · 19/02/2019 14:52

I think you're getting a hard time here, OP. People are overlooking the fact that you work hard.

EncroachingLoaf · 19/02/2019 14:56

Again, to those offering newborn advice, I'm sorry you struggled in your experiences. Fortunately, I'm preparing for all instances.

😂

What's the saying... all the gear but no idea?

We all prepared for our babies too op, thing is, they don't give the tiniest shit!

BartonHollow · 19/02/2019 15:05

Having just googled Egg Pram off the back of this thread (I don't have kids)

I am even more perplexed as to why this thread would cause any envy for the OP to take vanity pride in - all I can see is a black pushchair with a modern but not stop you in your tracks design

If the vanity/envy side is based of it being a very expensive pram and wanting other people to see that you can afford a very expensive pram then that's both funny and a bit embarrassing as most people won't even realise.

And it's a massive own goal because the damage done to it in transit in the mean time will make it look like you had to buy an expensive pram second hand because you couldn't afford a new one

(apologies if I've missed updates or duplicated replies, not fully RTFT)

fruityb · 19/02/2019 15:08

The fact I had paid that much for it would be exactly why I’d be buying a cheaper one. I have an armadillo flip xt and it cost us 800 for the carry cot and the pushchair seat. I bought a mothercare nanu for holidays.

Ahhh the wonderful naivety of someone barely out of their first trimester who already thinks they have this parenting lark nailed. All the best in your pregnancy OP, pregnancy is long, stop overthinking things before the baby is actually born.

coconutpie · 19/02/2019 15:18

Your DH should be the person who makes the decision regarding what pram is brought on the plane considering he seems to be the only one who is actually sensible and prioritising the baby's health and welfare over vanity in all of this nonsense (i.e. refusing to have his baby's ears pierced).

Iamboudicca · 19/02/2019 15:20

My phil and teds has never been the same since a flight. I took it as I needed an off road double pushchair for the other end. The airline lost it for almost a month and it took another 2 months to get them to cough up for the repairs. Even now its not the same. As it was we had to carry one and hire a pushchair for the other - not easy as I have a back problem which is why I took the pushchair in the first place.

Can your family borrow one/ hire one for the visit?

Easyjet don’t seem to mind boxed/bagged items as free child items though - we always bag up our car seats go through no problem. ( We have on occasion added extras to the car seat bag as well and no issues.

Iamboudicca · 19/02/2019 15:27

I think the reason that pushchairs get knackered more than skis etc is that mostly you want to take them to the gate, not check them in. If you want to box your pram then you will have to find another way of getting baby to the gate.

Mind you my pushchair was trashed even though it had to be bagged and checked in before security so maybe I’m talking out of my arse!

KissingInTheRain · 19/02/2019 15:29

Expensive prams and pushchairs must be the most pointless buys ever.

Does it have wheels? Does it have the necessary safety mark? Are the brakes in good order? No more needed.

Ohnonotuagain · 19/02/2019 15:29

Yes, OP WILL work hard. Hard at lugging that heavy pram to and from the airport and on her trip unnecessarily.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/02/2019 15:35

”I think you're getting a hard time here, OP. People are overlooking the fact that you work hard”

Because no-one else on here ever works hard, of course. Hmm

showerpower · 19/02/2019 15:35

I was a baby expert too, until I had one. Now I look back and cringe at how pfb I was. You will too op.

LaurieMarlow · 19/02/2019 15:37

I don’t agree.

I love the handling of my bugaboo, it can turn on a sixpence and is so responsive. It’s a dream to push compared to the cheapy McClaren that we got for holidays.

It’s also incredible comfy for DS, much more so than a bottom of the range pushchair.

I’d never take it on holidays though and obviously it’s a question of priorities. We could afford to spend the money on it at the time and we saw the value on it.

CrazyCrunk · 19/02/2019 15:40

Get a cheap pram and this outfit for your baby

To box my egg pram up to avoid airline damage?
MammaSchwifty · 19/02/2019 15:45

I had to Google 'egg pram' to try to understand the conundrum. Just looks like any old pram to me, so I'm afraid I still don't get it.

Just buy a cheap or second hand pram for on holiday, baby at 5 weeks can sleep in any sort of thing.

crazygolfgonewrong · 19/02/2019 15:45

We've used the bugaboo buffalo travel bag several times and never had the pram damaged. It's well padded. Maybe have a look at buying thatbone? That won't charge you for it either to check it.

ScafellPoke · 19/02/2019 15:49

Isn’t it a bit chavvy to own an expensive pram?... Icandy, bugaboo type brands.

I had a 20yr old mnt buggy that cost me £15. Did the trick!
