To think if you earn a huge salary then long hours are expected?

I have a cousin who work 60-70 hours minimum a week. Yes this is a heck of a lot, and I’d hate that. But, he is on £400k a year. All he does is complain how many hours he’s putting in, but seems to forget that with fewer hours there would be no business class 5* weekend breaks to New York etc.
I feel like telling him to shut up, or make do with less!

But it’s not actually that much though. Chances are he is working longer hours than many people earning more in his company. Then comes the issue of productivity. Most people on really long hours are actually quite unproductive. There is no reason to work very long hours. It’s purely a case of toxic work environment. I don’t think that being well off is a compensation for knowing that you are essentially working extra hours for no reason.

GregoryPeckingDuck · 18/02/2019 17:31

I also don’t see how earning less is an answer. Most jobs (barring those at the top) that actually pay enough to support a family have ridiculously long hours.

Hairyporker · 18/02/2019 17:32

Have I seriously just seen someone describe a salary of 400k as not that much?

Thesuzle · 18/02/2019 17:33

What on earth does he do ?

bibbitybobbityyhat · 18/02/2019 17:36

On the whole I'd say yanbu. Perhaps remind him that there are many people earning 60/70 hours per week and not even higher rate tax payers. Perhaps that would shut him up.

I'm so glad I'm not driven by money and not married to someone who is driven by money even if he is a bit of a workaholic.

dignifiedlazyness · 18/02/2019 17:36

He’s a senior associate at a law firm

£400k is MASSES! Yes, he should be expecting to work hard and have a lot of responsibility for such a salary.

19lottie82 · 18/02/2019 17:38

Definitely. I very much doubt anyone on that sort of money rolls in at 9 and leaves the office at 5!

Merryoldgoat · 18/02/2019 17:38

But it’s not actually that much though

In what fucking world is £400k pa ‘not that much’?

BendydickCuminsnatch · 18/02/2019 17:38

What Hairy said.... 🤯

How do you even know he earns that much exactly, he’s obviously not got much class 😄

SgtFredColon · 18/02/2019 17:38

Not that much!!!! Shock

AnnabelleLecter · 18/02/2019 17:39

Yes 400k is practically slave labour Hmm

BendydickCuminsnatch · 18/02/2019 17:39

But yes OP youre right, if you’re gonna earn that much you’d better work for it I guess. DH earns a quarter of that and does 70 hour weeks a lot so now I’m miffed 🤣🤣

PalindromicUser · 18/02/2019 17:40

What law firm is it? Because I don’t know of any law firm that pays their senior associates £400k pa. Equity partner maybe.

PickAChew · 18/02/2019 17:40

£400k not that much? I know some people here plead poverty on £100k but that takes the Biscuit

kaytee87 · 18/02/2019 17:41

It depends what you mean by huge salary I suppose. DH earns £440 per day (he clears the equivalent of a paye salary of 120k) and only works 37.5 hours per week and can choose his own hours.

GU24Mum · 18/02/2019 17:41

He MUST be working for a US firm on some sort of special arrangement as there's no way senior associates earn anywhere near that much even in the city!!!!

MyNameIsFartacus · 18/02/2019 17:42

That is just over £100 AN HOUR!!!

KitKat1985 · 18/02/2019 17:42

I think the high salary is a fair compensation for that many hours to be fair. If he wants less hours and stress he could always go for a lower paid but less responsible role.

I'm afraid my sympathies are limited for him to but that's because I work as a nurse and many of the lovely healthcare assistants I work with have to work 60-70 hours a week or else they can't afford to live on their shitty salary. So basically have to do the same number of hours as him just to scrape by each month.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 18/02/2019 17:42

kaytee OP says how much in her first post!

nanbread · 18/02/2019 17:43

Giving I used to work about 50 hours a week for 30K, I'd say he has it pretty good.

But most people I worked with did the same. Maybe other people at his company aren't working such long hours but are receiving the same salary? It's all relative isn't it.

BubblesBuddy · 18/02/2019 17:43

I think the poster meant the hours. For the money, these hours will be expected. No, they may not all be productive but 10/12 hour days and more at the weekend are fairly standard for very high earners. He would still do the same hours for way less. So, yes, just do it. He may also have to liase with the USA, for example, in a different time zone and that can extend hours. Many city solicitiors do not leave the office until the early hours.

If he gets worn down by it, change jobs. Or become self employed. Many City top jobs earn this but the employees work, work, work. It's a way of life. If it is not sustainable and making him unhappy, then he needs to change. Moaning is a bit much really.

Geminijes · 18/02/2019 17:43

But it’s not actually that much though

I think @Gregory was referring to the number of hours the guy worked rather than his salary.

Springwalk · 18/02/2019 17:43

To be fair he probably IS tired, a high salary can’t buy time or sleep.

pallisers · 18/02/2019 17:44

I hope Gregory misread that as 40K a year!
