Is Facebook actually being serious?!

You may find this strange (lol) but I created a false FB account because I wanted to send a message to a company that didn't have a phone number or email so I had no choice but to "fb" message them! I don't do social media whatsoever so I was really dreading it! So I decided to use a fake name. It didn't let me proceed to an account. It said I needed to upload a photo of myself for them to identify and then they will open my account and apparently they'll "delete" it after (bullshit! I bet they bloody keep it).

I thought, no way am I doing that! So I took a picture of my DS's male doll Blush I checked today and it said they've disabled my account.. obviously violated their T&C so that did not go well lol.

Why the fuck do they want a photo of me for? All I want is an account that does not identify my name or photo to anyone on there to message this said company!

Why so secret?

You are probably tracked through your phone and internet and CCTV cameras all day anyway.

adelias · 18/02/2019 15:39

Just google a random photo of someone

WinterfellWench · 18/02/2019 15:41

Weirdest thread of the day! Confused

Dreamzcancometrue · 18/02/2019 15:44

Errr because its facebook. The clue is in the name.

Kannet · 18/02/2019 15:46

It's to stop people creating false accounts to scam people or stalk people. What exactly do you think they are going to do with your photo. You are probably photographed fifty times a day by local cctv

HeckyPeck · 18/02/2019 15:47

Weird. I was able to set up an account for my dog!

DoJo · 18/02/2019 15:48

This this happened to a friend of mine who was trying to set up a profile to start a group page for his church. He sent a picture of himself and they still disabled his account!

EstrellaDamn · 18/02/2019 15:50

I've got a fake account as well as my own and I never had any requests for photos or anything. Odd!

Birdie6 · 18/02/2019 15:53

I have a fake account as well as my regular one. I used a photo of my cat - it's been like that for a few years, Facbook has never queried it.

LagunaBubbles · 18/02/2019 15:56

Whats the problem with them having a photo?

MammaMia19 · 18/02/2019 16:12

Probably because they have filters to prevent fake accounts being set up. It doesn't usually ask this

cantfindname · 18/02/2019 16:13

My cat is used as a fake account after I got a FB ban

I use his name and his picture with no problems. But I think they are getting more security conscious.

Ribbonsonabox · 18/02/2019 16:15

It's to stop abuse. If people can have totally anonymous accounts then they face no consequences for harassing people or inciting violence. I'm glad they've cracked down on this... the amount if people I know with 'stalking' accounts they just use to spy on people or make snide troll comments with is staggering.

AgnesNaismith · 18/02/2019 16:15

I’m glad they didn’t let you have an account!?!?

katseyes7 · 18/02/2019 16:21

My rabbits have an account on there!

Time40 · 18/02/2019 16:23

You are probably tracked through your phone and internet and CCTV cameras all day anyway

The OP has a legitimate concern about FB. The OP may well not be tracked through her phone - I'm not, because I have a very basic non-smart phone. CCTV images are not linked to your name. How much you are tracked through the internet depends on how you use the internet. Just because there is a lot of tracking going on does not mean that we should not try to resist it. FB are well known for taking as much information about users as possible and selling it to advertisers. What's wrong with refusing to make that easy for them?

@Dreamzcancometrue I was thinking the same thing

ihatethecold · 18/02/2019 16:26

My Dh has just got a job at FB. he has no social media so I had to set him up a FB account so he can get access into the building at work. I didn't upload a photo and it didn't ask for one..

"Your data is probably being stolen anyway so you should just hand over more of your data. What's your problem?"

Absolute lunatics.

NunoGoncalves · 18/02/2019 16:28

Weird. I have an empty profile that I made to follow a group that insist on only sharing information about their conferences on facebook. I just put in a fake name (e.g. Jane Doe) and my profile picture is a picture of the tree outside my window.

Never had any issue signing up or since then either.

sheldonstwin · 18/02/2019 16:28

I have a really old FB account in a fake name, it must be over 10 years old and I have no pictures on it, I have never ever posted on it and FB have never contacted me to say they're deleting it, even though I forgot about it for 8 years and never logged on. Nowadays I just use it to be a bit nosy and see if people I went to school are on there.

LightAsTheBreeze · 18/02/2019 16:33

I used to have a fake account, it was obviously fake as I was age about 110 and had a made up name, there was no way I would put my real birthdate on anything like Facebook. they never asked me about it though.

doctorfrog · 18/02/2019 16:34

My DH was kicked off Facebook because he was on there under a false name to stop an abusive relative tracking him down. So I'm not particularly impressed by the "stopping abuse" argument. It's pretty blatantly about verifying their data so it's more commercially attractive.
