Is Facebook actually being serious?!

You may find this strange (lol) but I created a false FB account because I wanted to send a message to a company that didn't have a phone number or email so I had no choice but to "fb" message them! I don't do social media whatsoever so I was really dreading it! So I decided to use a fake name. It didn't let me proceed to an account. It said I needed to upload a photo of myself for them to identify and then they will open my account and apparently they'll "delete" it after (bullshit! I bet they bloody keep it).

I thought, no way am I doing that! So I took a picture of my DS's male doll Blush I checked today and it said they've disabled my account.. obviously violated their T&C so that did not go well lol.

Why the fuck do they want a photo of me for? All I want is an account that does not identify my name or photo to anyone on there to message this said company!

They are just data mining - I have an old account with a fake name, I also know someone with a fake account she's asked FB to remove but they won't. There are a lot of legit and some less so reasons for wanting a fake FB account - but evidently now they (FB) are capitalising on all the "why are you bothered" automatons who can't think beyond the pictures of their cat's birthday cake or whatever.

My profile pic's a pub Grin

My Facebook isn’t fake as such, but is not in my actual name. My profile pic is a sheep.
Only problem I’ve encountered is an AirB&B booking via Facebook, which was refused as the owner “would be unable to recognise me from my profile picture”. Must say, I was quite relieved about that.

Too manage cyber bullying....

MerdedeBrexit · 18/02/2019 17:27

Yes, Facebook will happily allow Cambridge Analytica to harvest the data of 87 million FB users, but heaven forfend that users who want privacy should put up a fake avatar.

My photo is a sunset, been like that a over a year now.

Malibucyprus · 18/02/2019 17:46

I think it’s a recent thing, I have an old Facebook account, with a random picture. Two weeks ago, I tried to set up a new one for work and it asked for a photo and also wanted me to upload proof of ID I.e driving licence, passport etc.

Er no - they are data gathering.

I'm glad they've cracked down on this

There are lots of reasons why people should be allowed to be anonymous. For example, some countries are run by repressive regimes and it is not necessarily safe for the people living there to be perfectly identifiable on facebook. Or a woman who is hiding from a dangerous ex.

There are processes for this.

I tried to set up a separate FB account and they asked for a photo. I submitted it and they cancelled the account because I already had one. Oh well!

WineGummyBear · 18/02/2019 18:11

Really your beef is with the company who only deal with people via FB. Can you take your business elsewhere?

BendydickCuminsnatch · 18/02/2019 18:12

I opened a Facebook account last week and didn’t need a profile picture, still don’t have one, not planning to upload one. Most bizarre.

Eh? What I can ask nicely for anonymous account as long as I promise not to use it for trolling, stalking, disagreeing with anyone etc? Is that right?
