To ask for your experiences with Washer / Dryer combos

Apologies, I'm blatantly posting for traffic.
My washing machine has died this afternoon and my tumble dryer went a fortnight ago.
I really only use the tumble dryer for bed linen, pjs, socks etc.....
Could you please give me your pro's and cons of having a washing / dryer combo versus separate machines?
I like the idea of saving the space for perhaps an under counter freezer .....
Or would I be frustrated and annoyed with one and wish I had bought separate machines again.
I need to get ordering quickly hence my AIBU topic post for traffic.
Thanks so much

I have a Bosch washer/dryer and love it. 5 of us (DC are 3-6).

Ragevibration · 17/02/2019 20:50

I have no space for separates but have them anyway. The tumble dryer lives in the living room and doubles as a handy shelf as well!

Yes, it's not ideal having a tumble dryer in the living room, you can't have it on when you're watching TV as it's loud and it looks odd.

Other than that, after 5 years with a washer dryer and 5 years before that with just a washing machine I would not be without the dryer. A tiny one bedroom flat meant that I was constantly walking into a clothes horse and knocking everything off it and we had damp a lot. The washer dryer crumpled EVERYTHING up into a tiny ball of hell and took 5 hours to dry a load. I even had to iron pants. Seriously. I ended up paying a company to do my ironing it was that bad and we don't even have kids.

We don't have any outside space for a line either (we'll we do, but the scary noisy lady upstairs shouts at me if I so much as glance at the garden and I don't want to get beaten up so I don't bother).

The moral of the story was - I would never ever get a combined ever again if I could physically fit a dryer in anywhere even if not in the kitchen.

Sooperdooper19 · 17/02/2019 20:50

I’ve had a Zanussi washer dryer for 5 years..it’s fine for towels and things that don’t need ironing which works for us! If you want to put shirts and bedding in there, no way! I accidentally dried a cotton duvet cover in there and spent about 5 hours ironing it (before I threw it way and bought a new one) 😡

Galvantula · 17/02/2019 20:50

The only one we used was shit.

The drying capacity was less than the wash capacity i think so it did a rubbish job if you didn't dry a bit at a time.

Also i like being able to run the washer and drier at the same time sometimes a lot .

southernetter · 17/02/2019 20:52

When we bought a new dryer the delivery man who installed it told me that washer dryers last on average half as long as separate machines. Ours only lasted 4 years and it cost over £800 Angry

Biancadelrioisback · 17/02/2019 20:53

I used to keep my dryer in the bedroom. It was only small but it did mean that my washing got put away a lot quicker!

hastingsmua1 · 17/02/2019 20:56

Don’t do it!

Having a separate dryer is such a blessing.

oldfatandtired1 · 17/02/2019 20:56

I inherited an AEG washer/dryer with my new house. It washes well, the dryer’s crap . . . I live alone and tend to dry things overnight on an airer so not too inconvenient but if I had the room I’d have 2 separate machines.

Figmentofimagination · 17/02/2019 20:59

Oh, and I agree about the creases. My bedding is always creased. Towels and underwear aren't a problem though.

SnotttyNosedSheila · 17/02/2019 20:59

We had a Hoover Aquarius one that was bloody brilliant. It lasted over 10 years before it died on us. Although when on a fast spin I thought the house was going to collapse. We couldn't leave any crockery out on the worktop above it as it would have bounced off onto the floor.

We now have a Bosch one. It is bloody marvellous. It spins faster than the Hoover one and you can't even tell when standing next to it.

The dryer part is excellent. Stuff dries really quickly and as long as you don't overfill it stuff doesn't come out creased. I don't have room for separate washer and dryer but I'm very happy with this one.

trinitybleu · 17/02/2019 20:59

If you have space and budget, go for 2 washer dryers. It's amazing. All the bedding on before work and dry when I get home. Ditto towels. And can do one load wash and one load wash and dry overnight.

Samsung Ecobubble is good - you do have to adhere to the weight limit (9kg wash, 6kg dry) - you can't fill it to the top and expect it to dry it too!

CasperGutman · 17/02/2019 21:01

The upside of a washer dryer is. Being able to put a load in and have it washed and dried without you having to intervene. The downsides are as everyone else said, but the cheap Indesit we had was better than nothing for emergency use on a wet day when we didn't have room for separate machines.

Tweedypie · 17/02/2019 21:01

I'm a big fan of fluffing and folding and avoiding as much ironing as possible, so from the posts I'm thinking I'm best going down the separate machines route again.
I do dry lots of clothes just by hanging, my son has lots of sports wear in tech type fabrics which aren't good put in the dryer.
I think I'm going to look at a Samsung washer and get a cheaper dryer as not used quite so much.
Any opinions on Samsung ecobubble ?

Oh, and the bubble soak is fantastic for whites and work shirts etc.

trinitybleu · 17/02/2019 21:02

@TweedyPie crossed posts with you, see above!

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 17/02/2019 21:08

Going from a washer/dryer to separate machines was an absolute bloody revelation for me. I hated my washer dryer with a passion. It was noisy, expensive to run and took forever to dry anything. The worst thing was how ridiculously creased everything came out though. Even using a good quality steam iron I couldn't always get the creases out. Now I hardly iron anything!

Don't do it!

OldBean2 · 17/02/2019 21:14

I had my first washer / dryer for 15 years. I bloody loved it. The only thing I would say is to remember to wipe it round the seal after a wash and a drying session as it gets rid of all the fluff.

CoperCabana · 17/02/2019 21:21

Well I am going against the grain. I don’t want to use a dryer all the time when other ways of drying are totally adequate such as line drying and using the heat in the house. I only tumble towels and underwear sometimes, and sheets in a hurry. I have an LG large capacity washer dryer. Economical as a washer. Perfectly adequate as a dryer. In my experience of people with both, including me with my previous set up, the tumbler gets used way too much. Very happy with my combo.

PivotPivotPivottt · 17/02/2019 21:23

The stuff takes forever to dry! Mine broke and I replaced it with a normal washing machine. The only thing I miss is being able to throw pants/socks/vests/sleepsuits in as I find them a pain to hang up.

blackteasplease · 17/02/2019 21:29

I have a Bosch one and it's very good

OftenHangry · 17/02/2019 21:32

I have one. It does take long and clothes do come out creased if you dry them completely, but!
It's a saviour when there is no space for separate washer and dryer and it's perfect for sheets and towels so they don't hang everywhere.

I dry clothes only on a short drying cycle and then hang them. They finish drying withing few hours and not creased.

In a summer everything dries outside, but it is really great in a winter as a bit of help. Will not give you ever so fluffy towels though. For towels and sheets I use normal softener but minimum of washing powder and half a bottle of vinegar. Does wonders!

FrostedSnowdrops · 17/02/2019 21:58

My hotpoint washer dryer is good. Most of my clothes (certainly most of my underwear) always says no tumble drying. I don't know how people get away with tumble drying everything, do I just buy rubbish clothes?

We usually only dry towels in ours. Bed linen does tend to come out creased, but the towels are fine. We have an airing cupboard so dry most things in there. A pair of thick jeans will dry overnight in there no bother, the cupboard can hold about one load of washing. I don't think I would bank on using our washer dryer for much drying tbh, it's just DH and I which is why it's fine.

concernedforthefuture · 17/02/2019 21:59

They're shite
