mattress on the floor?

Aibu to put the DCs' mattresses on the floor? They both have outgrown their smaller beds, esp DC1.

I cannot afford new beds right now so was thinking of putting the mattresses directly onto the floor. we have carpet, not wooden floors.

People sleep on floors in lots of countries and did so over thousands of years so I don't think I am being hugely unreasonable. DC aren't fuzzed either but a friend said the carpet floor and the proximity to it could trigger all kind of allergies.

Anyone done this? any negative side effects?

No I wouldn't do this. Kids need a bed, it's a basic need. If social services were ever to be involved with you for any reason, they would be interested that the child didn't have a bed

Not true.

SS are concerned that a child has somewhere appropriate to sleep.

A mattress on the floor, with clean bedding, in a suitable room with age appropriate toys etc would be fine.

SS are concerned if a child is sleeping in a cold room, on a smelly, urine soaked/stained mattress without any bedding. Or if there are 6 children in a home with a parent and only 3 beds and the beds are slept in on a first come first served basis whereby the other children sleep on the living room floor or arm chairs.

Honestly, some people on here really have no idea!

And please dont salvage pallets from building sites - they are not manufactured to a safe living standard - the materials used may have dangerous residues, and you dont know what the pallets were used to carry, and where they were stored and the chemicals/plaster/oils/varnishes/solvents they came in contact with. Not safe for children to sleep on, although i know its a 10 year old trend from over the pond.

A floor bed is much safer and responsible. Air it if the room is damp. Buy a montessori book and display it on the shelf, explaining your concept and the benefits and how you discussed this with the children and took a family decision.
Eye rolling continues.

Also, incredibly unfair... that if you are better-off, a floor bed is a montessori bed, but if you are skint you are accused of letting your children sleeping on a cold hard floor

Quite.

I cannot believe the stubbornness on here in adhering to perceived concepts of a bed. It’s as if people are not able to think outside the narrow box

I once came into contact with a family through my work at the time whose young child was sleeping in a nicked supermarket trolley, in the style of a cot (it had a mattress and bedding). I'm wondering whether anyone would have an issue with that??

Anytime · 17/02/2019 20:24

Op - ignore anyone being judgemental, it is absolutely fine! As long as it's covered in a sheet and warm duvet or blanket there is no issue at all. I've slept really well next to my son on a mattress before!

DurhamDurham · 17/02/2019 20:29

But you know there's nothing inherently wrong with sleeping on a mattress on the floor, right? It doesn't mean anything

As I said my view of this has probably been coloured by the fact that the only times I've seen it is when I've been supporting families as a benefits advisor for a voluntary organisation. It was rarely through choice, more out of desperation.

DS (5) sleeps on the floor with no mattress (he has a perfectly fine bed, just likes the floor). I used to move him back to bed when I went to bed myself, but one mirning he asked me - tears in his eyes - why did I move him? He just likes the floor... Hmm

MissSmithToYou · 17/02/2019 21:23

@NunoGoncalves well, clearly. And you're one of those people. That's fine. I just happen to be the part of person who wants my children in nice bedrooms with beds in them

Argos currently have a single bed frame for £27.99, would it be possible to get something like that when you receive your next dla payment?
