mattress on the floor?

buttertoff33 · 17/02/2019 11:49

Aibu to put the DCs' mattresses on the floor? They both have outgrown their smaller beds, esp DC1.

I cannot afford new beds right now so was thinking of putting the mattresses directly onto the floor. we have carpet, not wooden floors.

People sleep on floors in lots of countries and did so over thousands of years so I don't think I am being hugely unreasonable. DC aren't fuzzed either but a friend said the carpet floor and the proximity to it could trigger all kind of allergies.

Anyone done this? any negative side effects?

If you could gets some slats to lay the mattress on, I can't see the problem. That way it's aired, so no need to prop up against the wall every day.

reluctantbrit · 17/02/2019 15:59

DD slept on the floor for around 9 months, we didn’t know what triggered the bed refusal but went along with it.

As others say, make sure you air the mattress on a weekly basis to avoid mould. We kept the wooden slates underneath to keep an air pocket, could this work in your case?

nervousmums · 17/02/2019 16:01

I would bloody love to sleep in a mattress on the floor! Go for it!

MegaBat · 17/02/2019 16:03

I wouldn't do this in a million years. Can't you ask on a local Facebook site for a bed frame?

And the reason I wouldn't do it is not because I think it's dangerous or anything. I just couldn't bear to think of my children without a proper bed when the reality is, I think it's fairly simple to get one

Mosaic123 · 17/02/2019 16:06

How about turning it every time you change the sheets? You could put a layer of newspaper between the carpet and the mattress and throw it away every now and then?

Gershwin · 17/02/2019 16:07

I wouldn't have a problem with it, but wouldn't be able to look at it every day. Also like a bed frame that I can use the space underneath to store stuff. However, as people have said, you can get a bed frame for a few quid on eBay, or Facebook. I sold a nearly new bed frame on eBay for £7 last year. It dismantled down into small enough parts that the buyer got it into his car.

Littlechocola · 17/02/2019 16:10

We do by choice. We can afford a bed frame but don’t have one.
We started when co-sleeping and found it helped our backs. Dc are all now teens but we don’t need or want a bed frame. The only downside is no underbed storage!

x2boys · 17/02/2019 16:10

Op.if your child has learning disabilities,ASD do my not qualify for family fund maybe they could funds new bed?

Shmithecat2 · 17/02/2019 16:12

It's a very Montessori thing. Nothing wrong with it at all!

Oceanbliss · 17/02/2019 16:12

For some inspiration and to show the doubters here's a link to a gallery of children's floor beds from apartment therapy, which shows quite a few different bedrooms with mattresses on the floor. And they look lovely.

BirthdayKake · 17/02/2019 16:14

I agree with the spider thing!

Do you get DLA? My ASD son is in the box room and I've just had a bespoke bed made over the box so he can have a desk. I haven't actually paid the joiner yet as he hasn't quite finished but when I do, it'll be from February's DLA!

Failing that, have you looked on Facebook for sale pages? I constantly see beds being given away for free or very cheaply.

Good luck x

Notso · 17/02/2019 16:16

all the warmth and sweat that people produce is absorbed creating a perfect environment for a layer of mould inside of (or underneath) the mattress.

This. We slept in mattresses on the floor for several months while we renovated. Every morning there was condensation under them.

Oceanbliss · 17/02/2019 16:17

I agree with the pp advising to air the mattress. That's good advice.

moofolk · 17/02/2019 16:18

If you don't want to lift to air (air flow essential to prevent damp) you could try putting the slate from the old beds on the floor and mattress on top of them.

dragonsfire · 17/02/2019 16:19

Is there any local building work going on?

If there is maybe see if can get some pallets they normally want to give them away as costs a lot to skip them - might solve the airing issue.

My nephews slept on only matresses for a year while my DSis in law had work done in the house - they are all alive and healthy!

moofolk · 17/02/2019 16:19

*slats.

And noticed someone else suggested this too!

moofolk · 17/02/2019 16:20

Pallets is a great idea

Bobbycat121 · 17/02/2019 16:21

Im pretty sure the family fund takes months and lots of people get refused even if they fit the criteria its not a guarantee.

Namechangedbecauseiwantto · 17/02/2019 16:23

@starzig@
That's really unhelpful, some people have no spare money, any money goes on food and bills. I certainly couldn't afford a bed (not even for a dolls house atm)

buttertoff33 · 17/02/2019 16:29

we had something else off the family fund 6 months ago and cannot get anything right now but a bed is on my list when we can reapply. so hopefully the floor bed will be temporary only.

I slept on a mattress on the floor for about 5 years after my exh and I split up and he managed to break the bed.

I agree with airing it. It's different to a divan - the base of a divan is hollow which allows the air to circulate.

I quite liked it actually.

Newadventure · 17/02/2019 16:30

I had two mattresses (one on top of the other) on the floor when I was a young adult living on my own. Dont ask me why I had two mattresses but no bed frame, I can't remember now.. it was obviously higher than just the one but I slept like that for around 5 years and loved it. Being so close to the floor made me feel safer and more comfortable for some reason.. im actually considering doing it again as my metal bed frame is starting to squeak which is driving me bonkers.

IWantChocolates · 17/02/2019 16:37

As a teenager I chose to put my mattress on the floor. I really enjoyed it.

OP - if you're anywhere near Oxford we have a single bed frame left in the house we just bought and it's unwanted. You're welcome to have it, it'll just go for free on Gumtree or something.

Pinkbells · 17/02/2019 16:39

It would be ok if it was just for a week or two - you can pick up a bed frame pretty cheaply on Facebay, etc.

QueenOfCatan · 17/02/2019 16:39

Mine and dhs mattressis on the floor, as is dds. Once a week when I change the sheets they both go up against the wall for the day. We've coslept so just didn't bother buying a bed frame when we moved. DD spend half the night half off her bed now Hmm As long as you take care of them it's fine, regular turning or airing and a good hoover!
