To be disgusted at Lloyds branch staff smirking?

Went to a Llloyds branch today and there was an older man there who was complaining the cash machine had swallowed his card. Staff went to the cash machine and told them they could not find a card in the machine.
This man had a speech difficulty, he might have had a stroke, and was a bit scruffily dressed. After they told him there was no card there, he was protesting and saying the machine had swallowed his card. He was obviously upset.
All the counter staff including the manager, were smirking away. They obviously thought he was stupid. I just found their attitude really awful.

I would assume lots of cctv in a bank...

As much as what you describe is clearly unacceptable, for all you know this has been happening for years, several times a day, and they were smirking because of whose turn it was to deal with it. It doesn't make their behaviour better, but if something is habitual and prolonged, then people develop different reactions.

Awful. My husband has early onset Alzheimer’s and I’m often made aware of other people’s attitudes when he tries to explain things. As for making a complaint - I’m one hundred percent certain if all the staff were amused at the situation they’d deny your complaint and back each other up. I would’ve been tempted to say something to them at the time but I’m a bit snappy at times - especially when I see things like that.

I normally challenge stuff. But I was there sorting out an estate, so no I did not feel up to challenging anything.

And if the manager had not been there, or not been smirking himself, I would complain. But when the manager does this as well, a complaint is going to make no difference.

Were they really all smirking?

We have various people come into my workplace where we have to put a professional smile on while they make the same nonsense complaint, say the same things or just be a pain generally.

An outsider to the situation might not see this is the 20th time we have dealt with this in a month and the smiles are waning now but we listen, nod away and make the right noises anyway.

I chose my bank based on how they treated my homeless clients. I used to queue up in one branch and they were faultlessly kind, patient and professional.

When you feel able, maybe write to the manager and say that you are reconsidering your banking based on lack of staff professionalism.

All of them that I could see, yes. Why do you think I am lying? There were 3 staff I could see, so we are not talking about hundreds of people.

Playing devils advocate here, could he have been a known trouble maker. I used to work on an office on a high street and we had 2/3 known drug users who used to come in and see if there was anyone new and try to claim we owed them x amount of agreed to charge their phone in their etc.

Maybe he's in there every day saying the same thing and they're used to him. If not, make a complaint if you want to.

Yes, I'd have to assume there was something else behind their behaviour, people normally react like the op. It could for example been the fourth time that day the same teller had to deal with it, and their humour was not about the man, but about the fact it was the fourth time that day the same person dealt with it. Or he came in with something different every time, and they were playing bingo.

Of course it's not funny, but if you deal with someth8ng enough, you can develop a sort of gallows humour, that is actually nothing to do with the man.

You should've (after the man had left to avoid him any upset) said why are you smirking? Or when you were sat with the person you were with said "look at your colleagues, why are they smirking",

I'm renowned you calling people out..

One in McDonalds drive through, approached the window very nice pleasant very young man asked for money, his till then just switched off, he apologised, tried to fix it, apologised again and then called the manager. The manager was vile to him, shouted, demanded what did you do? The man was visibly upset and this was in-front of me so he was also embarrassed. The manager didn't even look at me or apologise, the young boy did. So I pulled into a car parking space, walked to the counter and gave the manager the same dressing down he gave his staff member, in front of customers and staff. Explained how "good managers" don't need to berate staff publicly, don't embarrass staff or public. I noted his name and complained to head office. As I was leaving another staff member said "thank you so much, he's horrible to everyone".

Are you seriously “disgusted” because the staff tried to help? Or disgusted because of another reason?

Sorry op, I honestly don’t see what your issue is.
