To think they should bring back spitting image

They'd have loads of material to play with at the minute that's all. Anyone with me?

Jeremy Corbyn could be Compo from Last of the Summer Wine or perhaps Wurzel Gummidge. But then the only people who would get the gag would be us Baby Boomers!

LurpakIsTheOnlyButter · 13/02/2019 19:46

What for?

It is nigh on impossible to satirise these people. They are already puppets and doing a very good job of it themselves!!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 13/02/2019 19:48

Spitting Image was fabulous, and I loved it. I was quite sad when I saw a documentary about the making of it...they were under tremendous pressure, as to be topical they were still doing storylines at the last minute, and were bordering on nervous breakdowns.

FallenMadonnawiththeBadBoobies · 13/02/2019 19:52

Lurpak - Have you lost the fighting spirit? Satire is a great British Tradition. SI attacked everyone. It showed no favour. Have I got News for You is good, but in my opinion, speaks only on behalf of the liberal elite. We need more than that now.....don’t we?

ipswichwitch · 13/02/2019 19:52

Loved the sketches with John Major and Norma talking about peas. Me and my brother drove DM nuts singing the chicken song constantly!

halfwitpicker · 13/02/2019 19:54

Yes. As non PC as possible please.

Unhomme · 13/02/2019 20:02

Yes, spitting image was brilliant and would be so again now with all this material!

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/02/2019 20:13

Would love it to come back with the original writers and cast

Love Dead Ringers on R4 Grin especially Farage and Diane Abbott

VeryLittleOwl · 13/02/2019 20:16

Don't you mean DI-ANE AB-BOTT!!!, Enthusiasm? ;) I was just coming on here to say exactly the same about Dead Ringers. I miss Bremner, Bird and Fortune as well, I went to two live recordings of that and they were fabulous.

DangermousesSidekick · 13/02/2019 20:21

Definitely. It's either laugh or cry at the moment and I'd rather not have tears freezing on my face all the time.

JRMisOdious · 13/02/2019 20:21

Loved Spitting Image but fear nothing they could write now would even come close to the lunacy of real political life today.

Unfinishedkitchen · 13/02/2019 20:22

I don’t understand why it needs to be as un PC as possible? Are there really people out there who believe that in order to be funny you have to attack protected characteristics such as sex, race and sexuality? Are we regressing back to the days of slapstick and simple comedy?

I used to love Spitting Image and I don’t remember it being un PC just very funny. They never took the piss because someone was gay or whatever, it was based on the content of their character which is actually PC, genuinely funnier and isn’t at the expense of viewers who happen to look like them or share the same sexuality.

I recall the Jim Davidson types of the day being PC but I don’t recall them being funny to anyone other than simpletons. There’s always going to be a percentage of people who will roll around laughing at some dimwit yelling ‘oh look at that guy he walks so gay!’ However, Spitting Image, The Thick of It etc were actually intelligent comedy.

If it came back they could easily poke fun at gay, disabled or politicians of colour without making it about those characteristics at all. It just takes a bit of intelligence is all. However, I guess we’re in a day and age where intelligent comedy goes over the head of some who just want someone to stand around shouting ‘sooty’, slag off the fat ugly Mrs indoors or walk around with a limp wrist pretending they’re gay for laughs.

LurpakIsTheOnlyButter · 13/02/2019 20:22

Ok.

I concede.

Bring it back, I will try not to laugh so hard at the real politicians and guffaw at the puppets instead.

I am beginning to lose the will to live with it all but equally every new day brings another moment of utter disgust with the state of our political system.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/02/2019 20:25

Grin VeryLittleOwl

Love the Andrew and Diane chats about Jeremy

Sukochicha · 13/02/2019 20:28

Yes yes yes!!!

Jsmith99 · 13/02/2019 20:29

@Unfinishedkitchen

Thank you for illustrating my point about the professionally offended brigade so eloquently.

Shenanagins · 13/02/2019 20:29

There is definitely a great big gaping hole for good satire on British tv at the moment.

Spitting image was so funny and yes minister/prime minister is still funny today.

AliTheMinx · 13/02/2019 20:32

YES! Absolute genius. Loved that programme!

MissionItsPossible · 13/02/2019 21:02

@UnfinishedKitchen
I used to love Spitting Image and I don’t remember it being un PC just very funny.

@FallenMadonnawiththeBadBoobies
I LOVED Spitting Images. Remember how Margaret Thatcher became more and more masculine until she was joining the Cabinet at the urinals?

They never took the piss because someone was gay or whatever

Youtube remembers differently...

However, I guess we’re in a day and age where intelligent comedy goes over the head of some who just want someone to stand around shouting ‘sooty’, slag off the fat ugly Mrs indoors or walk around with a limp wrist pretending they’re gay for laughs.

We're in a day and age when that was tolerated maybe 20 years ago and wouldn't be tolerated now, and for some most of it, rightly so, but why anyone would think this show could be realistically be brought back and it be a good idea in 2019 to bring it back without any fuss and 'Twitter storms' is beyond me.

Zerrin13 · 13/02/2019 21:12

They just don't make comedy as brilliant as Spitting Image anymore.
I will never forget Prince Phillip portrayed as a Greek kebab seller in his takeaway van named Phil's Kebab House. Brilliant!

browneyes77 · 13/02/2019 21:13

I LOVED Spitting Image!

Even though they’d have lots of material to play with, I think the world is so full of easily offended people these days, that there’d be complaints left right and centre and it’d probably be taken off air!

browneyes77 · 13/02/2019 21:18

People might be aware of who some of the politicians ruining this country are

You know as a teenager in the early 90’s it was Spitting Image that actually educated me as to who half of the politicians were! GrinGrin

3out · 13/02/2019 21:36

I loved SI so much, and I’d love to see it back, but I agree with the original makers that the politicians already act like parodies of themselves that just wouldn’t work anymore.

Perhaps, oh, what’s it called? The stand up show with josie and the American which was like the original Mock the Week? I think that would work.

Clawdy · 13/02/2019 21:52

I always remember watching it when Thatcher won the election again, and they ended the programme with a shadowy shot of her puppet, while playing a version of Every Breath You Take - "Every job you take, every life you break, we'll be watching you...." It was so powerful.

BackforGood · 13/02/2019 21:59

I can't see it working so well anymore, as too many of the politicians are unrecognisable bland 'career politicians'.
Same with impressionists - the people they impersonate have to be stand out characters for it to work. Same would apply to the puppets.
