To think that winter is OVER

At least in London. Next two week forecast is high of 13/14 every day.

We've had about 2 weeks overall of 'chilly' weather Confused - last year was much colder. Didn't really warm up before the last 'beast from the east'.

I'd be really surprised if it got cold again. I'm thinking about planting stuff outside now. I actually planted salad leaves 3 weeks ago, they've all sprouted outside.

Well it certainly feels warmer, but last year the really awful weather didn’t start until after this point. Probably three weeks or so. I only know this because when I had DD (a year ago tomorrow) the weather was ok but three weeks later we were snowed in!

StellaMorris · 13/02/2019 08:54

The Beast from the East wasn’t until early March last year though. It often snows in March, or even April, in the north of England. I’m not putting away my big coat just yet.

Dontcarewhatimdoing · 13/02/2019 08:55

No, its been too easy so far this year. I reckon its saving up something really nasty for us!

hammeringinmyhead · 13/02/2019 08:57

It was heavy snow here in the SW last year on the 19th March, looking at my Instagram. YABU!

Bluelady · 13/02/2019 08:58

It felt really spring like yesterday and the daffodils are coming out here. I'm so hoping this is it.

InDubiousBattle · 13/02/2019 08:58

Well don't bloody jinx it! It was snowing in the last week of March here (Yorkshire) last year, proper drifting, deep snow.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 13/02/2019 08:59

I'm with you Laurie. C'mon Spring!

BitchQueen90 · 13/02/2019 09:00

I'm hopeful as I hate the cold but after the heavy snow and minus temperatures in March last year I'm not convinced yet. It could change drastically.

Thesearmsofmine · 13/02/2019 09:01

It snowed in April last year! Not over yet!

SileneOliveira · 13/02/2019 09:01

I was thinking the same but really don't dare to say it out loud.

We were hit very badly with snow in central Scotland last year on 28th February so I won't to counting my chickens quite yet.

However, I loathe and detest winter and am rejoicing in 11c today. Washing out and everything. What's really making a difference is the increasing hours of light which is WONDERFUL.

silkpyjamasallday · 13/02/2019 09:12

I'm in London and haven't even had the chance to get my big coats out, it simply hasn't been cold enough to wear them, I've been sweating in just a tshirt jumper and light jacket.

Ifailed · 13/02/2019 09:15

OP, I think you are right, and the BBC's monthly outlook agrees with you.

x2boys · 13/02/2019 09:17

I.hope so I did think.it felt like spring yesterday .

TheFifthKey · 13/02/2019 09:17

In the next two weeks, sunset gets half an hour later. That makes a massive difference to me and means I get to leave home and get back in daylight (just about). It honestly feels like a weight being lifted from my shoulders!

PlumCakeChica · 13/02/2019 09:19

Ooh a sunny and warmish February half term. Now that would be something Smile

Roomba · 13/02/2019 09:21

Indeed, we thought that this time last year. Look what happened. Then we went from -15°C here (when my boiler broke for weeks!) to 25°C a couple of weeks later. My internal thermostat didn't know what to do with itself Grin

theWarOnPeace · 13/02/2019 09:22

I suggested putting away the big coats , and my husband suggested I might have amnesia. I know he’s right, really. It’s just so easy to feel hopeful/desperate!

LaurieFairyCake · 13/02/2019 09:22

I already feel like there's loads of light in the daytime in the middle of the day. Sun is higher and it's just brighter.

I've defo got a spring in my step walking round.

Last year we had really late cold/snow but I don't remember there being respite or warmth before then - I only remember cold, more fucking cold and then WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS in April.

OP posts:
juneau · 13/02/2019 09:22

Cast ne'er a clout 'til May is out!

Grin

I know what you mean OP, it IS really mild now isn't it? But I'd hold you horses in terms of planting stuff. It's only mid-Feb and it can snow and have ground frost until April, so just enjoy the mild weather, but don't assume it's here to stay.

Lifecraft · 13/02/2019 09:24

Winter ends on 19 March this year. That fact, which is decided by the rotation of our planet around its nearest star, has nothing to do with what coat you are wearing or the appearance of a few daffodils.

sulflower · 13/02/2019 09:25

Hell no, we've had snow in May before.

StellaMorris · 13/02/2019 09:26

In 2000 it snowed the last week of April in Sheffield. I remember this, because we had the phone number of the snowplough man, to come and dig us out to get to our wedding. We’d got pretty friendly with him over the preceding week, but our wedding day was bright and sunny.

heartshapedknob · 13/02/2019 09:26

It feels positively balmy here today, bright sunshine and clear skies. It could still all go awry, winter doesn’t traditionally end until March 21st for a good reason!

It has felt like a very short winter though. I’m really hoping this doesn’t mean we’ll have Fiery Hot Summer Returns come May.

moviesgirl · 13/02/2019 09:27

+1
