To think that winter is OVER

LaurieFairyCake · 13/02/2019 08:50

At least in London. Next two week forecast is high of 13/14 every day.

We've had about 2 weeks overall of 'chilly' weather Confused - last year was much colder. Didn't really warm up before the last 'beast from the east'.

I'd be really surprised if it got cold again. I'm thinking about planting stuff outside now. I actually planted salad leaves 3 weeks ago, they've all sprouted outside.

The groundhog saw no shadow this year and he was right about it being 6 more weeks of winter last year so now he is my absolute scientific reliable weathercritter Grin

it does feel like Spring is getting here, and all the long range forecasts seem to agree

SaucyJack · 13/02/2019 11:25

Noooo! Don’t put your big coat away.

It’s a trap!

Lifecraft · 13/02/2019 11:33

@Lifecraft - Winter ends on 19 March this year. That fact, which is decided by the rotation of our planet around its nearest star, has nothing to do with what coat you are wearing or the appearance of a few daffodils.

@doIreallyneedto That's not actually the case. If you are defining Spring astrologically (i.e. rotation around the sun), then spring starts in early february. If you are defining it meteorologically (i.e. based on temperature), then spring starts in march.

Mid-summer and mid-winter are 21st june and 21st december respectively. There is a delay of about 6 weeks before the temperature change kicks in so the 3 warmest months are not the three brightest months, hence the difference in definition of seasons

Nope, you got that completely wrong. 21 June is the first day of summer, 21st December is the first day of winter.

The seasons are:

First day of spring - Spring equinox (12hrs daylight, 12 hrs night)
First Day of summer - Longest day
First day of autumn - autumnal equinox (12 hrs day, 12 hours night)
First day of winter - shortest day.

Fluffyears · 13/02/2019 11:55

It’s howling wind where I am in the west of Scotland and thenodf dpotnof drizzle so not spring yet.

nutellalove · 13/02/2019 11:59

I hope you are right but I have in the back of my mind memories from the beast from the east last year which only hit in mid March!

doIreallyneedto · 13/02/2019 12:13

@Lifecraft - Nope, you got that completely wrong. 21 June is the first day of summer, 21st December is the first day of winter.

Nope, you are completely wrong Wink. As I said, it depends on whether you are defining the seasons meteorologically or astronomically (I really can't believe I wrote astrologically in my last post - maybe it's because I'm a Virgo!), and even then it depends on location and culture. The Celtic calendar is astronomically based but is calculated based on daylight so the longest day of the year is the middle of summer and vice versa for winter. Other cultures (e.g. Germanic) do, as you stated, define spring as starting on the spring equinox.

I'm Irish and I'm going with the Celtic definitions. Obviously, your mileage may vary Grin

paslamer · 13/02/2019 12:14

1982 we were snowed in on the 25th April in Yorkshire!

outpinked · 13/02/2019 12:14

I wouldn’t speak so soon. The end of February - mid March has had a tendency to be awful over the past few years with a couple of years also having snowy April’s.

legolimb · 13/02/2019 12:15

Hope so - I went out with out my coat on today.

Granted I was going to the gym, by car, but still.

I hate winter so would be quite happy for this to be the end of it

Duckshead · 13/02/2019 12:25

Crikey hardly, it's only mid Feb!

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 13/02/2019 12:29

I don't know about that but I do know that I am over winter.

Jog on, grey skies.

Sallycinnamum · 13/02/2019 12:46

Its absolutely beautiful here in London. Can't wait to start hanging the washing out again. Roll on spring!

wendz86 · 13/02/2019 12:50

Could go any way , trying not to get too excited . Last year was snowing March and 27 degrees on my daughters birthday in April.

TheCounter · 13/02/2019 12:53

Been the mildest winter I can remember for a long time. Doubt we'll get much of anything now, given the current mid term forecast.
Can't remember the last time we had a full winter without a good covering at least two or three times where I am.

redyawn · 13/02/2019 13:00

Let's hope you are right although YABU because it's only mid Feb.

TotHappy · 13/02/2019 14:43

Mid Feb is almost always springlike here in Cornwall. Actually daffs are only really coming out now and usually they're out at Christmas. Something about last year's cold then heat must have messed them up

Parisbun · 13/02/2019 16:57

I like This chap who uses natures signs for weather predictions. There is some interesting stuff on his site - Ive got DD interested in looking more closely in the garden for signs.
Anyway - he comes down on an early spring with nothing like last years beast from the east in sight. A cold wet Easter though !

AfterSchoolWorry · 13/02/2019 16:58

(I live in Ireland)

Ribbonsonabox · 13/02/2019 16:59

I'm suspicious. I was out without a coat on today and actually sweating walking up the hill!! And I saw clumps of sprouting flowers in the flower beds. But I've been taken in before... last year there were a few says like this... and then there were blizzards. I've been hurt before so I'll not be taken in by this fake spring until I'm able to wear a vest top out... then ill believe it!!

PickAChew · 13/02/2019 17:04

One of our Japanese apricot trees is in full blossom.

Doesn't mean we won't get snow as late as May, though.

tor8181 · 14/02/2019 00:52

not here in the valleys of wales

0 to 1c the last few days at night and day times havent hit higher than 8

Hotterthanahotthing · 14/02/2019 01:13

I had a day off on Monday and it was beautiful, pottered in the garden and made sure plants that had started to push through the soil were covered, except for bulbs. The next morning, after I scrapped the ice off the car I drove to work through beautiful frost-white countryside to work.
Clear skies in the Midlands caused both.It is nice to feel the sun's warmth though. It will be even nicer when I can drive too and from work in the daylight.
Daffodils are out in full flower by sheltered hedges though as are primroses.

Cantbelieveit101 · 14/02/2019 02:05

I'm in the opposite hemisphere, so coming to the end of summer and yesterday was 37 degrees.
The past month everyday has been over 30.

Definitely no feel of autumn around here.

Monty27 · 14/02/2019 03:37

You can't really predict weather.
It might be lovely now but you can't tell where the next system is coming from.
Keep your hats and scarves handy.

catx1606 · 14/02/2019 06:00

The beast from the east was exceptional. I check the forecast daily as I hate the cold and cycle to work most days so need to know whether I need my waterproof clothing. Even the forecast isn't seeing wether like last year. Fingers crossed this is is it.
