WIBU to eat this food

We are quite short on money due to DP’s redundancy last year. I went to Aldi to buy some top up food for this week and had my teenage sons unpack the car. Discovered that we were missing a few items from the fridge today and went to find them rolling around at the back of our car. It’s been anything from -1 degrees to 10 degrees outside (10 degrees not achieved for long o might add). The items were bought around 5pm on Sunday. Would you eat them?

I normally pride myself on my food hygiene knowledge but as I recall, none of the courses covered “ham left on the back seat of the car” Hmm

The items are:
Butter (will eat, no issue)
Ham (Hmm)
Soft Cheese (Confused)
Feta (Confused)
Pâté (this I fear the most)

I would! Have done similar, too!

I’m sure it’s fine. 10 deg is hardly a hot summer’s day...

Divgirl2 · 12/02/2019 19:23

I'd ditch everything but the butter to be honest, and I'm pretty lax with my expiry dates.

Jess499427 · 12/02/2019 19:25

I’m usually pretty adventurous when it comes to use by dates but think I would chuck them. If it’s been sunny the temp inside the car could have gone above 10C for a while and you wouldn’t know.

SneakyGremlins · 12/02/2019 19:25

Of course! Mainly cause I couldn't afford to replace it. Grin

LilaJude · 12/02/2019 19:26

I would be wary of the pate. Give the ham a good sniff. The rest will probably be fine.

Houseonahill · 12/02/2019 19:28

I wouldn't eat the ham or the pate but the others I would if they looked and smelt fine

cardibach · 12/02/2019 19:29

The Feta will be fine. It’s paxked in salt so that will preserve it.

couchparsnip · 12/02/2019 19:30

Sniff test them. Especially the pate and ham. Might be ok if the car didnt get warm.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 12/02/2019 19:30

I'd eat any of them, so long as they smell all right.

seastargirl · 12/02/2019 19:30

I'd give it a sniff and decide after that!

Horsemenoftheaclopalypse · 12/02/2019 19:33

Another vote for sniff test!

boomboom1234 · 12/02/2019 19:36

I would test it. If it tastes ok I'd eat it.

DerelictWreck · 12/02/2019 19:37

Absolutely - just sniff check.

The average domestic fridge is 5C anyway!

Twickerhun · 12/02/2019 19:38

I’d eat all but the pate of it smelt ok

BlueCornishPixie · 12/02/2019 19:39

I probably wouldn't eat the paté, deffo the butter and the cheese. They'll be fine, is sniff test the ham

stayathomer · 12/02/2019 19:45

I thunk you'll be able to tell with the ham but saying that the butter and the ham are the only ones I'd even chance-sorry!!!

ButtMuncher · 12/02/2019 19:47

I'd ditch the pate and the ham. But I'm a bit OTT on things like this.

DramaAlpaca · 12/02/2019 19:47

I wouldn't eat the pate, I'd do a sniff test on the ham, the rest will be fine.

Teenagemaw · 12/02/2019 19:49

Sniff test... pate and ham both smell rank when they are off so you will know immediately.

Sukochicha · 12/02/2019 19:51

I’d smell them all before deciding.

Isn’t the point of pate that it is a form of preserving?

How much time was the temp about 4/5 degree?

Ithinkmycatisevil · 12/02/2019 19:52

I would chuck the pate and be a bit suspicious of the ham. The utter and cheese I would still use, it should be ok. My MIL didn't realise that cheese strings should be kept in the fridge (don't ask me how), she fed them to my kids for ages before I realised and informed her that they really are a fridge item. The kids suffered no ill effects from eating them.

SpamChaudFroid · 12/02/2019 19:54

All the cheeses I'd eat. Ham... would assess carefully, if looked/smelled OK. Pate - would almost definitely be binned.

Stylinit · 12/02/2019 20:01

I wouldn’t eat the meat but the rest wouldn’t worry me at all.

Aridane · 12/02/2019 20:04

I'd eat the lot - fine in this weather

GiantKitten · 12/02/2019 20:07

when you say back of the car, OP, do you mean back seat or boot? If boot, is it a proper boot or if a hatchback, is there a cover over it?

Unless the car had been parked with its rear facing S, & there was quite a bit of sun where you are yesterday & today, I'd probably eat the lot after a sniff test Grin

Fridges are supposed to be kept at 5C I know, but I've no idea what mine is, & we eat things like yogurts that are weeks out of date Blush
