WIBU to eat this food

We are quite short on money due to DP’s redundancy last year. I went to Aldi to buy some top up food for this week and had my teenage sons unpack the car. Discovered that we were missing a few items from the fridge today and went to find them rolling around at the back of our car. It’s been anything from -1 degrees to 10 degrees outside (10 degrees not achieved for long o might add). The items were bought around 5pm on Sunday. Would you eat them?

I normally pride myself on my food hygiene knowledge but as I recall, none of the courses covered “ham left on the back seat of the car” Hmm

The items are:
Butter (will eat, no issue)
Ham (Hmm)
Soft Cheese (Confused)
Feta (Confused)
Pâté (this I fear the most)

I'd eat all of it, as long as the car had not been warm at any point - has it been sunny?

Sniff test permitting, of course?

bobstersmum · 12/02/2019 20:08

Well, if it's gone below 0 could they have frozen and defrosted? I would worry about it all so I'd chuck it probably!

Battenburg1978 · 12/02/2019 20:13

Oh I would eat the lot! Surely ham and pate will smell funny if they've been out too long.

Bringbackthestripes · 12/02/2019 20:13

The butter is the only thing I would use.

Because I am a bit picky about food, and everyone else seemed to think they would be fine, I also just asked a chef (family member) if they would eat any of those things and their response was “fuck no!”
Good luck! Grin

sideorderofchips · 12/02/2019 20:17

I’d just eat the lot

bananamonkey · 12/02/2019 20:18

I wouldn’t eat the pate but I’d sniff/try everything else. I keep butter out of the fridge anyway.

starzig · 12/02/2019 20:25

A domestic fridge probably ranges up to 10C anyway.

LonelyOversharer · 12/02/2019 20:27

Pate and ham I would sniff first!

I pack my shopping into bags laid out in the boot after Aldi. Rather than just chucking the lot in.

Well done for finding the items before the sun came out. Once lost 500g of butter after a trip to costco. Rancid butter in the car is not a smell I will ever forget. Like properly lost and rotten potatoes, but worse. It was the gift that gave on giving, every time the car warmed up.

CatandtheFiddle · 12/02/2019 20:36

I'd eat them.

But really - "short on money" and you're buying paté and ham? I eat very well, but these are luxury items, and actually cured mats like ham should be special not everyday foods for you health ...

lljkk · 12/02/2019 21:24

If they smell fine I'd eat them.

Ahardyfool · 12/02/2019 21:41

When I say short on money I’m not claiming extreme poverty here but I’m not talking fancy cured meats either. Basic pâté on bread is a full meal for me and ‘crap ham’ for sandwiches for the teenage boys through the week and weekend is just the ticket. I’ve done making £20 stretch the week in the past and would do again if necessary but neither can I afford nor would I wish to throw good food away. The question is...how “good” is this stuff. I don’t want to eat rancid stuff!

They weren’t in a proper boot as we have a 7 seater where the back seats merged into the boot so I wouldn’t exactly say the stuff was in a nice cool chiller-esque compartment. More slipped down between the far back seats and the boot section so not in full sun but not nicely and coolly hidden either. DP May have eaten some pâté. I was on the phone earlier and he offered me a piece of toast with some on pre-dinner and I tried to shake my head at him with an ominous sort of face but I think he’d already scoffed some. I guess he’ll be the guinea pig on that one. The ham I’m willing to try but feel a bit bad about the fact mostly the children would eat this and maybe that’s not such a good idea. Feta could be a go-er...

I hate the thought of binning 90% of it but possibly not more than I detest the idea of d and v.

Apologies I appear to have posted two identical posts. My phone does this sometimes if I internet in the bathroom.

The boot always stay coldest, it's been 1 day & hardly warm - give it a sniff first, but sounds like it should be ok.

halfwitpicker · 13/02/2019 01:10

Like pps I'd whizz just the pate. The rest should be OK.

FiveShelties · 13/02/2019 01:27

I would bin it, the thought that I may spend 24 hours+ very close to the bathroom is enough to put me off.

Tavannach · 13/02/2019 01:33

Bin the paté, and different test the rest.

mathanxiety · 13/02/2019 01:43

I wouldn't eat the pate but the rest would probably be fine.

StoppinBy · 13/02/2019 01:52

Maybe I missed it but do you mean Celsius or farenheit?

Farenheit, not a problem in the world, Celsius I would only be eating the butter personally.
