AIBU to ask how long you can balance on one leg with your eyes closed?

DH and I just had a ridiculous competition
You have to stand on your handwriting side leg - ie if you’re right handed stand on your right leg and lift the other leg up off the ground, bending it at the knee
See how long you can hold it

How long can you manage and do you wobble?

DH thinks you shouldn’t wobble at all but only managed 12 seconds
Grin now imagining Mumsnetters all over the country randomly balancing on one leg and freaking the rest of the house out...

I can't do that get up off the floor without using your hands thing either. My knees are knackered. Maybe it's just a lack of muscle strength?

Newsername · 11/02/2019 20:37

There was a study done once where they found people who can’t balance on one leg very long die quicker than people who can balance for long amounts of time.

AornisHades · 11/02/2019 20:47

2 seconds Grin I had to cheat a bit and do it between 2 walls with my hands out as I have a neurological issue and my balance is a bit shot.

SwedishEdith · 11/02/2019 20:51

I think people need to post their rough age for these results to mean much.

CoachBombay · 11/02/2019 20:53

29 seconds and I'm 29 😁 so I have the correct balance for my age. Wahoo I finally got average at something lol 😂

Gentlygently · 11/02/2019 20:56

This thread has made my evening! Over a minute on my right leg, and around 50s on my left. I am in my forties. And I can get up from cross legged with no hands (didn’t know I could till I tried!)

Jaynesworld · 11/02/2019 21:04

10 seconds Grin

SadOtter · 11/02/2019 21:21

I'm 30, I can do 36 on my left, 37 on my right (I'm naturally ambidextrous so tested both)

I know I can do at least 7 minutes on each with my eyes open.
I can get off the floor in 3 seconds without hands.

LLOE7 · 11/02/2019 21:47

32 and a half seconds 😂

BarbedBloom · 11/02/2019 22:11

About 5 seconds Grin I cannot get up off the floor without holding onto something but I have RA and some joint damage so won’t beat myself up for that.

lljkk · 11/02/2019 22:11

DH has heaps of muscle strength in his legs but can't got off the floor hands-free. Flexibility (?suppleness?) comes into it, too.

3out · 11/02/2019 22:20

AIBU to think that everyone who manages more than 15 seconds hasn’t got their eyes shut? 😂😂

meow1989 · 11/02/2019 22:22

8 seconds Shock

Iggly · 11/02/2019 22:25

I managed 53 then got tired.
However I realised I should have used a timer as not sure if I was counting too fast 🤣🤣

However this was my second attempt. First attempt was about 19 secs.

To go for much longer, I made sure I was “centred” and had pulled in my core muscles before starting, relaxed my chin and shoulders and it helped massively!!!

ShannonRockallMalin · 11/02/2019 22:29

5 seconds Blush
DH managed 16 seconds then crashed into a chest of drawers and knocked a load of stuff over.

HeronLanyon · 11/02/2019 22:38

I ‘managed’ 3 seconds.
I am very ambidextrous (writing is about only thing I use writing handmfor).
Other leg I managed 4 seconds. Bloody hell ! Each time just swayed no wobbling but swayed steadily to the side.

Mother87 · 11/02/2019 22:38

3out - flamingo styleGrin

Crowdo · 11/02/2019 22:43

I do a lot of yoga and I can stand indefinitely on one leg with eyes closed. It's about keeping your eyes still once you've got your balance, even though they're closed.

Can stand up instantly from cross legged with only feet touching the floor.

Aberforthsgoat · 11/02/2019 23:05

Oops definitely not laughing at your DH shannon Blush

I'm still flexible (joints are too flexible, tbh) but can't get up without pushing/pulling on something. I'm mid-50s though, could easily have done it in 20s and 30s Wink

Where are people putting their other foot for the balance thing? And what are you doing with your arms?

chaoscategorised · 12/02/2019 00:13

A disappointing 0.5 seconds. I've got dodgy inner ears and have never had good balance though - I can manage for a while with my eyes open if I focus on looking at one spot really hard... I can get off the floor without using my hands though!

Blink1982 · 12/02/2019 00:19

Ive had 3 vodkas and managed 13 seconds. Dp managed a measly 5

Nothinglefttochoose · 12/02/2019 04:03

Wrong area

VioletBedframe · 12/02/2019 05:04

Did you decide to try this after watching Roma OP?

ComicalEngineering · 12/02/2019 05:07

Just done 50s on right leg, and 45 on left leg.
Less wobble on left leg, but I'm right handed.
I had patches of serious wobble, and patches where I was reasonably stable.

Getting up from the floor. This is either easy - roll forward onto knees and up, or impossible - straight up. My ankles dont bend to allow me to do this. How are you supposed to do it?
