DH and I just had a ridiculous competition
You have to stand on your handwriting side leg - ie if you’re right handed stand on your right leg and lift the other leg up off the ground, bending it at the knee
See how long you can hold it

How long can you manage and do you wobble?

DH thinks you shouldn’t wobble at all but only managed 12 seconds
Grin now imagining Mumsnetters all over the country randomly balancing on one leg and freaking the rest of the house out...

I read this and was judging the people who only managed a few seconds thinking it's not that hard....😳 so previous posters I apologise for my judgement! That's way harder than I thought it would be!! Only managed about 10 seconds (with some severe wobbling in the meantime!!)

LilaJude · 11/02/2019 18:18

I’m literally so impressed with myself now 😂

havingtochangeusernameagain · 11/02/2019 18:22

Keep practising ladies (and any gents). It is very good to be able to balance and helps you avoid falls when you are older. Might as well start now, however old you are!

havingtochangeusernameagain · 11/02/2019 18:23

And I can't really do it for very long at all! Even sucking my stomach in very hard, which usually helps when my eyes are open.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 11/02/2019 18:25

Managed about 15 seconds the second time I tried (but cheated by getting on one leg with eye open first, and then closing it before starting to count).

First time was about 8.

llangennith · 11/02/2019 18:30

Two seconds! Waiting for a knee op😄

DrDiva · 11/02/2019 18:34

Oh in which case I’ve just done three minutes! Go me!
(You didn’t say I wasn’t allowed to lean in the bathroom rail...)

LaurieFairyCake · 11/02/2019 18:34

Indefinitely - but I do this for 5 minutes. I don't wobble.

I do yoga.

Sadly it means nothing 🤔

There's a test the bbc said a few years ago. You have to sit on the floor and get up from a seated position without using your hands. Apparently if it takes longer than 5 seconds your going to be crippled/die young ShockAngry

I can't do it AT ALL - not in 5 seconds, not in 5 minutes !!!

Aberforthsgoat · 11/02/2019 18:39

Blimey @lauriefairycake another great advert for yoga
I’m now doing random yoga stances in my living room haha

I feel a bit better though as I can get up from a seated position on the floor without using my hands in seconds!

eurochick · 11/02/2019 18:54

About 5 seconds. I have always had terrible balance (despite yoga).

3out · 11/02/2019 18:55

@Aberforthsgoat can we try standing on both feet with eyes shut and see how long we last? 😂😂

I had no issues at all with eyes open. No proper wobbles. I could’ve held the hold for ages. Eyes shut though - Wobbly McWobblyson with wobbles on the side!

uncoolnn · 11/02/2019 19:17

About 6 seconds Blushand some definite wobbling!

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 11/02/2019 19:26

Right leg - 13 seconds. Left leg, until I get bored (gave up after a couple of minutes). I’m right handed but have had surgery on my right foot and that buggered my walking and balance on that side.

Pilates. You think you’re just gently waving you’re arms and legs around but it does wonders for your core strength and balance.

MrsReacher85 · 11/02/2019 19:26

@aberforthsgoat I definitely wobbled! I’ve always had reasonable balance though, I attribute it to being very small of chest, nothing to topple me over. 😂

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 11/02/2019 19:27

So, getting up from a seated position. You mean from sitting cross legged? I’m not allowed to put my knees underneath me and then stand up?

iklboo · 11/02/2019 19:28

About a nanosecond. I've got Ménière's disease.

Mellowyell0w · 11/02/2019 19:56

Err that would currently be 0 seconds as demonstrated be the ENT Dr I saw two weeks ago because of hearing loss and dizziness. I lasted about 3 sec when he made me close my eyes and march on the spot before he had to catch me when I lost my balance.

Tanaqui · 11/02/2019 20:05

How high do you have to hold the other foot? If only just off the ground, over a minute. If knee up in line with hip, much much less!

Chouetted · 11/02/2019 20:17

I can't even stand on two legs with my eyes closed, so i am not going to try with one leg! Grin

LaurieFairyCake · 11/02/2019 20:19

Yes, getting up from a cross legged position

It's so weird how we're all so different. My yoga teacher says she has loads of yoga bunnies who are amazing at yoga until she tells them to close their eyes and then they fall over Grin

It's like learning whole new moves doing it with your eyes shut

ShowOfHands · 11/02/2019 20:19

I'm going to try the standing on one leg thing when I get out the bath.

The sitting down/standing up thing I find easy peasy.

OnceUponAThread · 11/02/2019 20:23

Can I propose a counter challenge.

Sit on the floor, stand up without anything other than the soles of your feet touching the floor. No knees, elbows, hands or anything.

My OH can't do it at all, but watching him try is very funny.

I can do it, but it's HARD

lljkk · 11/02/2019 20:25

I did this as a research experiment control, doubt I managed more than 15 seconds. I can balance well with eyes open & can snap off the floor no hands-no problem.

3boysandabump · 11/02/2019 20:27

I made it to 19 seconds.
Ds1 managed 5
Ds2 manages 3
