I mean blocking the stricter new laws about FGM.

He is an utter disgrace and a danger to women and girls everywhere. Holding up efforts to protect girls from FGM makes him a danger

Arsehole!

It’s not blocked. It’s postponed to a future date sometime in March. Mind you he might do the same thing again

Didntwanttochangemyname · 08/02/2019 16:19

He probably did it for the same reason he blocked the new laws on up skirting - because other laws in the same bill were wrong.

BertrandRussell · 08/02/2019 16:19

There are other arseholes on Twitter saying it should be blocked until it protects “all children” not just girls.

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 08/02/2019 16:22

He has form for this....funnily enough they all seem to be regarding laws which affect women and girls.

Waste of oxygen,

He says he has a problem with Private Members' Bills. However, some years ago I was involved in the drafting of and campaigning for a PMB which passed and became law, and which ultimately can result in people being deprived of their property (for damn good reason, but still)... which you'd think he would dislike, but amazingly enough he was nowhere to be seen. Yet PMBs about women's and girls' issues, he's all over.... How. Strange. 🤔

Misseuropadiscodancer · 08/02/2019 16:48

I've emailed his office to complain (not that I'm expecting a reply).

His email address is:

Another white sexist old man imposing his outdated attitudes on the rest of us. Disgraceful !

DameFanny · 08/02/2019 17:13

He's also a waste of carbon

APurpleSquirrel · 08/02/2019 18:19

He apparently objects to the principle of Private Members’ Bills... except those of his friends, which he doesn’t object too! 🤬
Why is he still an MP? Who the hell votes for him?

TheFaerieQueene · 08/02/2019 18:21

Any woman who votes for him in the next GE, should be ashamed.

MissionItsPossible · 08/02/2019 18:24

He's a cunt.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 08/02/2019 18:25

There is actually a valid reason for this. He contests every private members bill on the principle that every bill deserves to be properly debated, not shoved in the backdoor. One day something horrendous will slip in by the backdoor.

So as a result, like the Up Skirting Bill, this will be properly debated by a full house , and proper amendments made in need. Might be an arcane way of doing things, but at least you know they are done right .

BTW - at the proper reading- he voted for the Up Skirting Bill.

AngelaHodgeson · 08/02/2019 18:28

Any change to the law which potentially results in people going to jail absolutely should face the scrutiny of the House of Commons when the MPs are there. It isn't okay to put them through with only a couple of MPs around (as is the case on most Fridays). That was his explanation for postponing the upskirting law (which he subsequently voted for btw), and I agree with it.

I support the upskirting law, and stricter laws on FGM. They are both issues which should command the attention of a full House of Commons.

ohfourfoxache · 08/02/2019 18:29

Waste of oxygen AND a major contributor to global warming......

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 08/02/2019 18:30

Is it true that he opposes each one PlainSpeaking, because it's looking more like he does pick and choose which rather undermines his argument...

APurpleSquirrel · 08/02/2019 18:33

But he doesn’t object to every bill - he keeps quiet when they’re bills presented by his friends, so surely that’s hypocritical?

The Christchurch MP argues that even if he backs the intent of such bills he objects to them because he does not support the procedural principle of legislation being passed without debate at second reading.

As Commons officials read out a series of bills on Friday afternoon, Chope and fellow backbencher Peter Bone objected to a series of them, including another proposed by Goldsmith, to help the finances of Kew Gardens.
Chope did not object to two private members’ bills proposed by Bone, although other MPs did.

“There is actually a valid reason for this. He contests every private members bill”

Apart from those put forward by his friends.

Theworldisfullofgs · 08/02/2019 18:36

Last year he sponsored 31 private members bills.

He is a hypocrite and mysogynist. New word for dictionary - doing a chope.

recrudescence · 08/02/2019 18:37

It is simply not right that one individual has so much power to disrupt proceedings - the whole PMB system needs to be reformed.

KatherinaMinola · 08/02/2019 18:38

I think he comes across as someone who has some kind of disorder.

AngelaHodgeson · 08/02/2019 18:53

There is actually a valid reason for this. He contests every private members bill

I'm pretty sure he only opposes those which involve sending people to jail. Which is why he doesn't oppose all of them. If he was opposing all they'd have to deal with him because literally nothing would get done on Fridays.

And, as I said upthread, I think it is really important that we don't send people to prison based on a law which hasn't faced proper parliamentary scrutiny.

Bombardier25966 · 08/02/2019 18:59

@AngelaHodgeson The Bill will go through numerous debates and committees before it is passed as law.

www.gov.uk/guidance/legislative-process-taking-a-bill-through-parliament

Why would anyone seek to defend this nasty Tory?

AngelaHodgeson · 08/02/2019 19:31

I'm not sure why disliking a person means I should automatically disagree with everything he does or says.

I understand that there are other committees and debates, but I still think that a bill which would send some people to prison (or in this case remove children from their parents) should have a proper final debate. I care about the process because, while this bill is one I agree with, the same process could be used for something I strongly disagree with.

Notreallyhavingitall · 08/02/2019 19:41

Not only does he not object to them all, if you look at the Private Members' Bill's presented today he actually had one of his own having a second reading.

BarbarianMum · 08/02/2019 19:58

He's a dissembling misogynist pig. No surprise there.
