AIBU to stop DD going to MILs on a school night

Wrote a long post and lost it , sorry if this is double posted.

Basically MIL puts hand cream on her hands and then brushes down DD’s clothes to get rid of her (very sheddy) dog’s hairs. This is leaving marks on DD’s uniform and they won’t wash out.

I’ve asked her to stop but she hasn’t. The marks are still there and DD tells me she still does it. There is no need for DD to be there after school.

I’m sick of the washing, specialist cleaners don’t get it out and the clothes are looking washed to death, the sweatshirt particularly looks awful.

The next time she does it. Take the clothes, show her them damage and ask her to get it out. If she can’t get the mark off, tell her you would like her to replace the items!😁

TeenTimesTwo · 08/02/2019 15:02

Depending on logistics and age, if DD wants to visit can she
a) go home first to get changed
or
b) keep some clothes there to change into immediately

Gruzinkerbell1 · 08/02/2019 15:03

Stop her going. If MIL asks why the visits have suddenly stopped tell her it's because she keeps ruining her school uniform.

Littlefrog99 · 08/02/2019 15:04

Could you buy MIL a lint roller and insist she use it?

Birdsgottafly · 08/02/2019 15:06

Keeping clothes or pj's there is one option.

You buying a roller is another.

You have to make it clear that her method can't go on and it's either change what she's doing or your DD doesn't go there.

Sukochicha · 08/02/2019 15:12

She uses hand cream to get dog hairs off the school uniform, does she do that to her own clothes??

thecatsthecats · 08/02/2019 15:19

Bizarre. That would just make a sticky mess and not even be that effective, surely?

Lint roller or rubber gloves would be far more effective - and I'm sure I'd rather clean an item myself than have it ruined!

Be direct, show her the damage and tell her it stops, or DD visits do.

yips · 08/02/2019 15:19

Sukochicha is this a serious comment?

Drogosnextwife · 08/02/2019 15:22

Why would you think that wasn't a serious comment?

Beeziekn33ze · 08/02/2019 15:24

A clothes brush or those plastic Sticky Mitts? Or even sellotape reversed and wound around her hand.

EyeOfTheTigger · 08/02/2019 15:27

If there's no need for DD to be there after school, then why is she going?

HazelBite · 08/02/2019 15:35

Why on earth is she not using rubber gloves to remove the hair.
I can't imagine how revolting hairy handcream is Shock

WeeDangerousSpike · 08/02/2019 15:40

It can't go on, it's ridiculous, but to save the uniform that's damaged so far, have you tried washing up liquid or green swarfega? It's more likely to work on the greasyness of the hand cream than normal clothes detergent.

Aridane · 08/02/2019 15:51

What sort of hand cream is it that doesn't wash out?

fourplusfour · 08/02/2019 15:53

"If there's no need for DD to be there after school, then why is she going?"

I don't know @eyeofthetigger, perhaps OPs DD likes her GM?

CantStopMeNow · 08/02/2019 15:56

How old is dd?
Just don't let her go there after school - job done.
If she goes of her own accord then she's responsible for the state of her uniform and should be washing it herself

yips · 08/02/2019 22:11

Drogosnexywife because clearly OP meant DMIL is using hand cream to moisturise her hands, and then brushing DD to get rid of hair... she's not using the hand cream to facilitate the hair removal Confused

Drogosnextwife · 08/02/2019 22:21

yips

No that is not what the OP clearly meant, she said she is putting hand cream on everytime she is brushing the out hairs off DD. I think everyone on this thread is under the impression that dmil is using the hand cream to make her hands sticky she she can take the hairs off.

Maelstrop · 08/02/2019 22:48

Marigolds and water, works brilliantly. Bit harsh, tho and likely to yank the material. Even just water alone works well. I scrape all the hair from the stair carpet by just having wet hands. Why is she using bloody hand cream? That’s mad!

Luaa · 08/02/2019 22:54

I definitely read it as mil puts hand cream on to make her hands sticky so the dog hair will stick to then. Which is crazy!

Spidz · 09/02/2019 00:09

Thank you all.

She can’t see the damage, so she says. I’ve shown her because DD had to wear the clothes with the marks on. The sweatshirt (red) has faded a bit with all the washing and the marks show up as a darker colour.

Thanks for the swafega tip, will try.

I don’t know what hand cream it is but the streaks it leaves are like oil and show up as mentioned as a different colour on the clothes.

DD is 4, started reception last September.

She is using the cream to take off the hairs, yes. Making them sticky. I saw her do it after several months of wondering what the stains were. (Normally she would bring DD out to the car so I didn’t see it happening for ages.)

Lint roller was mentioned, DH thinks she has one.

Will look into sticky mitts.

Never occurred to me to leave clothes to change into there Blush but don’t know if she would.

DD doesn’t have to be there, MIL asked to pick her up a couple of times a week. It can be a pain because sometimes I just want to get home but I think it’s going to have to change.

Thanks again.

As she's little DD might be happy to wear an apron at her GM's house, tabard style is great for protecting clothes. Possibly even a painting apron or an old shirt, like some schools get children to bring in for messy art lessons.

SaucyJack · 09/02/2019 00:19

That’s a bit strange.

Better she does nothing at all. Have you just tried telling her outright she can’t have DD if she’s going to be weird and spoil all her clothes?

Four is small to find it funny, but once she gets a bit older it’s not going to be very nice to have Nanny doing it.

Spidz · 09/02/2019 00:19

Beeziekn33ze Actually yes, the hairs might not stick to her painting tabard thingy as it’s slippery nylon. Thanks.

Do hairs stick to slippery nylon?!

SaucyJack

Yes I said this! I don’t mind the hairs. Well I do, but not as much as the marks! At least she could wear the skirt more than once then (typical gray school skirt). The sweatshirt has to be a changed everyday because lunch!
