To think this must be a scam?

I just had a phone call, and when I answered, it was an automated message telling me that my internet connection was going to be disconnected within 24 hours as my IP address had been compromised from several countries. They said my IP address would be changed, and I should press 1 to be connected to a technician.

I did not press 1. I am assuming that, if I had, and had followed the technician's advice, they would have had access to my computer and all my passwords, bank account data etc.

Yep. Definitely.

JonSlow · 08/02/2019 11:05

99.9999% a scam. Well done for not biting.

PrawnOfCreation · 08/02/2019 11:12

It'll be the Mumsnet tech intern.

Piffle11 · 08/02/2019 11:13

Yes, it's a scam. I've had 2 of these calls, automated voice (female) telling me that there was an issue with internet connection and I needed to press X button or it would go off indefinitely and I would be charged for reconnection. Ignored it and of course nothing happened.

blackteasplease · 08/02/2019 11:15

I had one today. An automated message but quite well disguised as real. Only the pauses really gave it away.

Saying I needed a life insurance review. I said which company are you from, and the message said "sorry I'll take you off the list"!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/02/2019 11:19

You're probably right, @PrawnOfCreation!! Grin

This particular scam attempt was a new one on me - I just hope people don't get caught by it. I have emailed my mother, as I think she could be fooled - not because she is stupid or not aware of scams, but because she is not terribly tech-savvy.

yes got this call at 8am yesterday - the spooky thing was that our internet was playing silly buggers and we were in the middle of resetting it - tried googling the number but nothing came up - annoying

BMW6 · 08/02/2019 11:23

I've been getting these calls for weeks OP. Different voices, same basic message. Always says my internet service will be stopped within 24 hours - it never has.

Total scam, ignore and pass the word to family and friends.

letsdolunch321 · 08/02/2019 11:25

I had this at work recently - I am a switchboard operator - I told the guy who was calling it was a scam, he laughed down the phone at me then ended the call ...... WANKER!!!!

FadedRed · 08/02/2019 11:27

I’ve had this several times on the landline. Definitely a scam.
Tbh the recorded message scam calls annoy me more than when a real person scam calls (you know, the phony ‘Calling from Windows’ type) because I think if someone is trying to steal money from me, they could at least make the effort to do it personally, not just send a recorded message, lazy gits! Grin

Dodie66 · 08/02/2019 11:27

I’ve been getting these calls dailytoo. If you press the button you will get charged a lot for the phone call. Don’t do it

There is also one where they say they are BT and and you will be cut off. Had to wrestle the phone off my elderly grandmother once and hang up! I phoned her 24hours later...she was still connected.

MashedSpud · 08/02/2019 11:35

I used to get scam calls almost daily until I switched my supplier then they mysteriously stopped completely.

I have a feeling the people who were working in customer service for this particular isp were selling people’s details to scammers but I can’t prove it of course.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 08/02/2019 11:36

I get these quite often I block them but they just use other numbers. I never answer calls I don’t recognise now, anyone important will leave a message

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/02/2019 11:40

Been having these for the last 6 months periodically.

When you hang up from the call, dial 1572 and follow instructions to block the number.

Sparklesocks · 08/02/2019 11:43

A scam, absolutely. more info:

Different scam but I have been getting repeated calls from another country telling me my BT internet IP has been compromised, then pass me to another supervisor. They then ask me to press a button on the bottom left of my computer with a windows flag.

I've let it run a couple of times before telling them to get lost but how does this scam work? How do they get money out of people? The last time this happened and I said this is a scam the man shouted down the phone at me "what are you going to do about it? Call the cops bitch!"

Sparklesocks · 08/02/2019 11:54

Birdie often what happens Is they talk you through a few commands on your laptop and ask you to press buttons etc and give them remote access which means they can see/operate your PC from wherever they are. They then ‘show’ how your computer is compromised by opening code boxes and typing nonsense (but might look legit if you aren’t familiar with coding etc) and reassure you they can ‘fix’ it. Once in they’ll either access your files and look for sensitive info which they’ll use/sell on to third parties. Alternatively they tell you that you have a virus/malware/hacker causing the issue, and they can get rid of it with their software which costs £XX and take your details over the phone. Of course you’re buying nothing as nothing is wrong. And then they have not only taken money but have your card details they can use again.

A lot of people who aren’t super tech savvy get taken in as they’re relieved someone is ‘fixing’ the problem and happy to pay for that. Evil bastards.

LiverBirdie · 08/02/2019 11:57

Wow, that's pretty shocking Shock

paintinmyhairAgain · 08/02/2019 11:57

ime it's hard enough trying to get hold of someone in IT to sort out a problem, don't really think they would be calling up if it was real.Smile

Grace212 · 08/02/2019 12:04

my mum's been getting these since my dad died

it was particularly worrying for her, not just because she was obviously in the worst possible emotional state, but because we didn't know his computer password and thought that my attempts to get in might have compromised the line!

There was another thread asking if there has been a massive increase in nuisance calls lately - certainly from mum's POV there has been and this one comes about 3 times a week.

BreevandercampLGJ · 08/02/2019 12:08

I got a call from HMRC the other day.

Things must be going badly for them, they are now employing robots with american accents. Grin

LittlePaintBox · 08/02/2019 12:09

Scam. I spent ages talking to TalkTalk after the first one of these I got, the tech guy said as long as I hadn't pressed 1 I was fine!

easyandy101 · 08/02/2019 12:14

I did not press 1. I am assuming that, if I had, and had followed the technician's advice, they would have had access to my computer and all my passwords, bank account data etc.

More likely to connect you to a premium rate line

Just had the same call about half hour ago
