Chicken pox @ Centre Parcs?

MisstoMrs · 07/02/2019 13:47

Currently at Centre parcs and was horrified to see a child in the swimming pool who was covered head to toe with what was clearly a very active case of chicken pox.

My DS is nearly 3 so I expect him to get chicken pox at some point, I’m really not worried about that. But in a pool, with loads of small babies, when we’re all on holiday? It just seemed really selfish to me. AIBU?

We had the same thing in centre parcs in Europe in the soft play-kid with obvious chicken pox (and fairly certain it wasn't moscullum as DS has had that). Luckily DS had had it before but still pissed me off no end

slappinthebass · 07/02/2019 15:36

You should have reported it to a life guard. It will be part of their health and safety policy to boot them out. You should also get a chicken pox vaccine for you ASAP, or at least get your titers checked. Chicken pox as an adult is nasty.

slappinthebass · 07/02/2019 15:40

@ohmywhattodo what is your source that it is due to come into the UK vaccination schedule? The info on why the UK doesn't have it on the NHS website says otherwise.

AnxiousMcAnxiousFace · 07/02/2019 15:56

Actually. In some cases it does. If you google images you can see.

AnxiousMcAnxiousFace · 07/02/2019 15:56

Sorry. That was regarding the mastocytosis.

JazzyBBG · 07/02/2019 16:07

It might not be - honestly. I know a child that had sepsis as a baby and people always assume she has chicken pox but she was left with an auto immune rash that resembles it - permanently. Equally I'd be reporting and keeping my distance!

Doodlebug5 · 07/02/2019 16:10

I've got shingles and I haven't stepped a foot outside this week to make sure I don't pass it on to anyone who hasn't had chickenpox.

If her child has chickenpox she is a selfish selfish woman.

I can fully believe it. We went to CP not long ago and I was taken aback by people’s behaviour and lack of regard for hygiene and rules in and around the pool. The whole family became ill after a weekend there and I’m certain it was down to pool grimness (although our chalet wasn’t that clean either...). The lifeguards were all very young and unassertive and not stopping people opening and eating huge picnics, dropping food everywhere, on poolside. I highly doubt they’d say anything to the family about the chicken pox based on what they seemed to ignore!

Never again, not a Centre Parcs fan Sad

MassDebate · 07/02/2019 16:40

DD came down with chickenpox a few days after a trip to Centerparcs when she was 5mo. I am convinced she caught it while we were there. I think a lot of people ignore the guidance and take their kids out whilst still infectious.

ohmywhattodo · 07/02/2019 16:51

@slapinthebass had at least 2 practise nurses and 2 GPS say it directly to me in the past couple of years. There is only us and NZ who don’t currently have it in our vaccination programmes in the developed countries. All of Europe, Canada, USA, Aus, Japan etc have it.

ohmywhattodo · 07/02/2019 16:53

The USA have had it in theirs since 1996!

OldLadyKnee · 07/02/2019 16:54

This is one of the many reasons I hate CPs.

It is a way for you just burn money on some kind of dystopian leisure hell.

havingtochangeusernameagain · 07/02/2019 17:16

When my ds had molluscum contagiosum (sounds like something from Harry Potter) he did go swimming but we covered up the rashy bit. The second part of the name is a bit of a clue that it might be, well, contagious.

The kids may or may not have had CP. Wouldn't bother me as I've had it, and so has the rest of my family (and badly enough not to get it again, I know if you have a very mild case it can come back). If I hadn't had it, I'd have removed myself from the situation as the OP did. I wouldn't say anything because I am not a qualified doctor (or any kind of medic) and am not qualified to say whether someone has CP or not.

Littlebelina · 07/02/2019 17:27

Doodle my understanding of shingles is that you don't have to stay in as long as the rash is covered. You can catch chicken pox from it but only with direct contact with the oozy fluid

mumofthreesmallmen3 · 07/02/2019 18:02

My son has urticaria pigmentosa mastocytosis and I am always asked if he has chicken pox and get stares when we go swimming! So could be that

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/02/2019 18:26

I have it, but it never looked like this.

I suppose it can vary in severity.

Badgersmummy25 · 07/02/2019 21:22

Some people are just so selfish with chicken pox, the worst one I know is a lady whose child goes to school with mine, who is a Doctor!!!! Who smuggled her chicken poxed son on a plane back from Greece as she didn't want him to miss any school. Now she has no excuse as she knows what the dangers are but couldn't be bothered if it meant having to put her own plans out at all :( when my two got it they didn't leave the house at all until the last spot dried up, even though that meant for at least 28 days one of them was stuck indoors and I had to work around that.

StarJumpAlertTakeCover · 07/02/2019 23:47

My husband is on a long term chemo for leukaemia. He’s very susceptible to viral infections. This Ignorance and selfishness could be lethal.
What is wrong with people? It’s also very dangerous for pregnant women and newborns. How utterly bloody irresponsible can you be?

anxiousbundle · 08/02/2019 00:29

@Badgersmummy25 ShockShock that's awful!! How did she manage to disguise the pox?

Can you imagine if there was a pregnant woman on that plane or a young baby?Sad

Doman · 08/02/2019 00:32

My DD was diagnosed with chicken pox while we were at Butlin's. We were (very kindly) told we had to leave the site because they couldn't risk an outbreak. I'm surprised the same thing hasn't happened here.

Badgersmummy25 · 08/02/2019 10:01

@anxiousbundle he didn't have any on his face so she just hid them under his clothes, I just couldn't believe she would risk people when she knew all the dangers...argh, but she has form for this type of thing so it wasn't a huge surprise

PrincessScarlett · 08/02/2019 10:12

OP, you really need to report this to reception. Although I'm amazed the lifeguards and other people in the pool didn't notice. CP is bloody expensive and I'd be furious if a family was allowed to wander around freely with chicken pox.

I also know someone whose kids came down with chicken pox abroad and they managed to hide it with lots of clothing and came home on the plane. I was gobsmacked at their selfishness. People really have no understanding or empathy for anyone else.

obviouslymarvellous · 08/02/2019 10:18

This makes me so mad! We were due to go away earlier last year and 5 days before one of my twins got chicken pox. We cancelled - got back what we could on insurance but lost about £1k between the 7 of us. I had other twin immunised as she has sen (and was freaking out at the spots she could see - she still got them after first jab but only had 8 spots) but I still kept her off etc inconsiderate and entitlement again! I would have said something but I have no filter on my mouth anymore Wink
