Chicken pox @ Centre Parcs?

MisstoMrs · 07/02/2019 13:47

Currently at Centre parcs and was horrified to see a child in the swimming pool who was covered head to toe with what was clearly a very active case of chicken pox.

My DS is nearly 3 so I expect him to get chicken pox at some point, I’m really not worried about that. But in a pool, with loads of small babies, when we’re all on holiday? It just seemed really selfish to me. AIBU?

Ds age 6 was covered in molliscum for over a year Sad and on doctors advice did carry on as normal including swimming (albeit in a body type suit) and we had quite a few instances of people telling me off for exposing the world to chicken pox or as one particularly pleasant lady put it "that's fucking hideous, what's wrong with him? " whilst I was stood with himShockAngry

Just be careful. I think molluscum contagiosum looks poxy and you don't have to keep children out of pools with that, (I think...)

Mymadworld · 07/02/2019 14:19

Cross post @Nanny0gg

Nanny0gg · 07/02/2019 14:19

x-post!

MisstoMrs · 07/02/2019 14:20

@Enidblyton1 I didn’t stare or say anything rude. I removed myself and my child. Neither of us have had chicken pox. I do agree with others though that I should have alerted the lifeguard who could have had a discrete word. I’m sorry for your friend’s experience, truly, but I don’t think that’s the case here.

DN came down with chicken pox three days before they were due to go on holiday. The Dr gave them a fit to fly letter the day after she had the first spots so they were nowhere near scabbed. I'd have been livid if I'd seen her on a plane.

PickleSarnie · 07/02/2019 14:20

My kids have both had Molluscum Contagiosum and, at its worst, the spots look an awful lot like chicken pox. So it might have not been chicken pox.

However, I know -a selfish arse-- person who took their kid to Center Parcs so I know that there are people that stupid and selfish

Nanny0gg · 07/02/2019 14:21

@Mymadworld

Sorry that woman was so nasty, It's no fun for the child either! I'm glad your DS's cleared up (cos that's quite late to suffer isn't it?)

MisstoMrs · 07/02/2019 14:21

@mymadworld that’s awful! Poor you and poor DS.

Eek, which one?! I’m taking 4mo DD to Whinfell tomorrow, she’s too little to get it!

ohmywhattodo · 07/02/2019 14:22

Get your child privately vaccinated. Don’t make them suffer chicken pox when there’s a perfectly good, safe & widely used vaccination against it. It’s due to come I to the nhs vaccination programme within the next few years.

MisstoMrs · 07/02/2019 14:22

@LittleMissPonsible it’s not whinfell

And if person with said child does have a child with chicken pox that is terribly selfish and irresponsible.

LuckyLou7 · 07/02/2019 14:23

My DS also had molluscum contagiosum aged about 2, it took a year or so to clear up - and looked very similar to chicken pox. However, we were advised not to take him swimming (although it's unclear if it can be passed on through water) unless all of the lesions were covered. We bought him a mini wetsuit that did the job perfectly.

I would definitely talk to a member of staff about this child.

LittleMissPonsible · 07/02/2019 14:24

Thank you Miss

ReaganSomerset · 07/02/2019 14:25

@ohmywhattodo doesn't that need a booster every ten years or so, or did I make that up?

Mymadworld · 07/02/2019 14:26

@Nanny0gg caught from his brother age 3. Interestingly, both my niece & nephew had it too and another friend's 3 children so I assume most people have natural immunity but certain gene pools don't!

CatnissEverdene · 07/02/2019 14:28

My 7 month old DD ended up in hospital with chickenpox. She had blisters in her nose, ears and mouth so couldn't feed and her groin area all got infected. She had to be sedated and tube fed. She was dreadfully poorly for nearly 6 weeks after.

I'd have gone marching up and said something, I have zero tolerance of people spreading what they think is a "mild" infection Angry

Hoppinggreen · 07/02/2019 14:28

When DS was about 2 he got Chicken Pox about a week before we were due to go to CP.
I took him to The GP on the Thursday who confirmed he was not contagious and arrived on the Friday. We went to the pool on the Saturday morning but I called at customer services on the way and explained.
We still cleared the toddler pool though, despite me announcing it was fine as we got in.
So this child you saw MAY not have been contagious ( parents were arseholes if it was though)

Enidblyton1 · 07/02/2019 14:28

Sorry OP, didn’t mean my reply to sound as harsh as it did! Was meaning generally ‘don’t be that person’ - not you personally.

But if you haven’t had chicken pox, I would strongly recommend looking into the vaccination. Chicken pox in adults is often really nasty. When your DS does catch it, he’ll probably pass it on to you - I would do anything to avoid this.

anxiousbundle · 07/02/2019 14:28

To be fair, I doubt someone would be so brazenly stupid to take a child into a POOL when covered in chickenpox. I know people go to the supermarket etc for quick trips but I would really doubt they'd allow their child in the pool.

I can imagine it's panicked you though as you can't be 100% sure.

Maybe speak to someone at reception? If it's not chicken pox they probably have had a few complaints already and the child's mother may have explained its a skin condition to staff when arriving.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 07/02/2019 14:29

Masto looks nothing like chickenpox.

nutellalove · 07/02/2019 14:34

So so selfish. This makes me so annoyed. Not a care out there for people with underlying health problems or pregnant ladies. Angry even if I have a bad cold I'm often isolating myself in one room at hime so the rest of my family don't get it!

ThunderStorms · 07/02/2019 14:34

Even if they’re scanned over and no longer contagious, what sort of idiot wood take their child swimming? Who wants to swim with another child's scabs coming off in the pool

user564534 · 07/02/2019 15:11

The child probably doesn't feel very well either, would rather be doing something less energetic!
