AIBU to think this is a bit much from my tenants?

I'm an accidental landlord with a flat I just can't sell, so we've put some absolutely lovely tenants in for a couple of years until the market picks up. They've been brilliant - perfect tenants!

Apart from...

They keep breaking the toilet seats. They've been there 10 months and we've had to put five new seats in already. Apparently one of the couple likes to do a "courtesy flush" while sitting on the loo and this twisting motion is snapping the seats at the screws and down the middle. We've asked them not to do this but I've just had another call that it's broken again - how many broken seats is too many? Do we start charging them for the callouts / seats (we're currently covering this as well as the new seats every time)

I don't want to make them mad as they really are lovely but it's getting a bit much now... or do we just suck it up as an expense of letting the property?

Thanks...

WTF did I just read? Tell to to replace it. This is just ridiculous. And disgusting.

Girlicorne · 06/02/2019 18:34

We are tenants and we have always replaced the toilet seat if broken, I thought stuff like that was quite standard as tenants? I wouldn't dream of bothering my landlord for some thing that costs a fiver from wilkos!!! They are being unreasonable.

bullyingadvice2017 · 06/02/2019 18:34

I think they are squatting too.

DeathyMcDeathStarFace · 06/02/2019 18:36

They replace it, and have a water meter installed.

GoddamnCars · 06/02/2019 18:39

We replaced our own toilet seat. Too much effort to bother the landlord about it. They’re taking the piss.

KittyCrackers · 06/02/2019 18:40

Thanks all - highly doubt they're standing on the seat, culturally speaking, iyswim, but may well be using as a bidet... bleurgh... DH is going there this week armed with new seat and instructions to replace any future ones themselves. You've been amazing - thanks so much!

So they're "courteous" when it comes to not subjecting each other to nasty smells, but they're not being very courteous when it comes to looking after your property OP!

BlueJag · 06/02/2019 19:00

I've been a landlord for 16 years I've never had to purchase a new toilet seat. Very strange situation.
I'll let them know they have to replace it from now on.

mogtheexcellent · 06/02/2019 19:12

I wouldn't even replace the current broken one tbh. It's not your problem.

Warpdrive · 06/02/2019 19:20

No, don’t do it. You’re only supposed to replace if it breaks due to wear and tear. If they’ve damaged it, they replace it.

thenightsky · 06/02/2019 19:27

I don't think reaching around behind you to flush the lever is going to break a toilet seat. More likely they are standing/squatting on it, although why they don't lift it up and stand/squat on the porcelain instead I do not know. Daft buggers.

thequeenoftarts · 06/02/2019 19:42

4 years in one house not broken a toilet seat here yet.
6 years in other one, yes, one broke ( as they do) and paid for and replaced it myself.
It's wear and tear and ffs they aren't expensive from Argos, under 20 euros
So that's a fiver each if 2 couples in house

Juells · 06/02/2019 20:32

Put in two new bathrooms 17 years ago, and both toilets still have the original seats.

One daughter had a flat-share with a lovely woman who was rather large, and the toilet seat kept splitting at the front :( It was a weird arrangement where the toilet jutted out from the wall, with invisible tank and fittings, section of wall had to be removed to replace the seat. It got very expensive, and it was a relief when the flat-mate moved out and toilet seats stopped breaking.

theSnuffster · 06/02/2019 20:48

I'd never ask my landlord to replace a toilet seat!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 06/02/2019 21:21

Hope they're now more respectful of the bathroom facilities!

When I was a tenant, the loo seat broke because it was old and the hinges had disintegrated. I didn't even think of asking the landlord to replace it - not least because I knew they'd buy the cheapest one they could find (and I wouldn't have put it past them to 'recycle' one from one of the empty flats... ) - I just toddled down to the shops and bought a new (decent) one myself.

swampytiggaa · 07/02/2019 08:05

We’ve been in our house for 9 years. Six of us in total. In that time we have had one broken loo seat which was when the plumber stood on it 😂😂😂 he went and got a replacement and fitted it because he broke it (although we were perfectly happy to replace it ourselves as it was an accident)

Sorry, I know this is a bit late but I've just seen this advert for a thing called a shower toilet - apparently it also controls the odour so there wouldn't be any need for them to do anything as ridiculous as a courtesy flush (I'm guessing these cost a bazillion quid though !)
