To enquire about your water bill?

We are two adults in a three bed house. DD is at university but is home during the holidays. Both out all day, two days per week neither of us is home until 10pm. Both term time only.
Water bill was £35pm but has now increased to £55. Seems rather a jump.
Can I ask how much similar families pay?
We're in the south.

We're in the Thames Water area and our last bill was £120 for 6 months which included the summer dry season (therefore quite a lot of gardening watering).

On a meter, 2 people. Daily showers, 2-3 washing machine loads a week and 3 dishwasher cycles.

I always thought it was pretty reasonable and now I know it is! Some of these prices for the same commodity are crazy!

Hotterthanahotthing · 05/02/2019 23:54

Ours is £22pcm,only 2 of us,no dishwasher and showers only.It did go up to £30 and I checked buyer were using no more water,a bit of a closer look at the bill and I found we had been put down as detached and the prices are higher for that,we are a semi.4 months later and we are back to £21.As most people say the opportunity to save is small as the standing charges and sewerage are fixed.

stinkypoo · 05/02/2019 23:59

My and DD5 (she's here half time), washing machine x2/wk and similar for half size dishwasher.
We are on a meter & pay £19/month

Cornishclio · 06/02/2019 00:01

2 adults and £60 per month. We are in the south west which is extortionate

waterandlemonjuice · 06/02/2019 00:02

South east, £83 a month

snozzlemaid · 06/02/2019 00:05

Another one from Cornwall here. We pay £90 a month - no meter.

NobodyKnowsTiddlyPom · 06/02/2019 00:12

Ours is about £20 a month. We are on a meter but we don't pay drainage as we have a septic tank. 3 kids, several large animals in the fields with drinking troughs, washing machine on once or twice daily, dishwasher on daily and one or two showers (between us, not each!) daily.

romany4 · 06/02/2019 00:12

I live in a HA house and its added into my rent. Mine is £45 a month
I'm in Yorkshire

JasperKarat · 06/02/2019 00:19

We used to have a one bed flat with no garden, two adults , no bath just a shower, 3-4 loads of washing a week , water meter -£57 per month, now have a three bed house, big garden (use more water in summer), two loads of washing a day. 2 adults 1 DC rates £60 a month I think the whole metered is cheaper thing is nonsense.

JasperKarat · 06/02/2019 00:19

We're in Essex

KeptTheBeachesShipwreckFree · 06/02/2019 01:04

Yorkshire Water, £40 a month for 12 months on a non-metered supply. 3 bed semi with a large garden.

BriennetheBeauty · 06/02/2019 09:07

2 adults 2 primary age children 3 bed home
counties with meter - £20/month

BitchQueen90 · 06/02/2019 09:13

Just me and DS in a 2 bedroom flat (no garden, no dishwasher) in the Midlands. I am not on a meter.

I pay £12pm. I don't know anyone with a lower water bill than me.

TescoValue · 06/02/2019 09:16

I'm in the south west and pay £25 a month for 2 adults and a baby in a 2 bed house. We have those stupid storage heaters that heat a tank of water at night so we can only use hot water of 1 tank a day.

Chunny04 · 06/02/2019 09:17

Blimey ours is £81 a month. 2 adults 3 kids. Daily showers dishwasher and washing machine. But we are in Devon so notoriously expensive.

ChampooPapi · 06/02/2019 09:17

Oh my god ours is only 28 pounds a month, 3 bedroom house in Bristol. No meter and we have 2 children so lots of washing ect. Everyone's seems so expensive!

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 06/02/2019 09:17

Ors is horrendous....we pay a total of around £150 a month with sewerage costs. We are in a water meter and DS is autistic and won’t use the shower.

Because we claim no other benefits we are not entitled to any special tariff.

So am now trying to claim Universal Credit which I really don’t want to do but is the only way I can address the water bills evidently. Just had another one in from Anglian Water for the past six months which is nearly £400. Along with the fact that tax credits say they overpaid me by £350 last year when I was claiming I am currently stressing.

Biker47 · 06/02/2019 09:24

£19 a month on meter, 2 adults, plus a dishwasher.

Ollivander84 · 06/02/2019 09:25

£22 for me (alone) on a meter

DancingintheSpoonlight · 06/02/2019 09:32

If your habits haven't changed but your "usage" has there must be an issue. Your meter is most likely in the footpath outside your house under a small lid. Take a reading, don't use any water for at least an hour and then take another. If there's movement turn off the inside stop tap and do the same.
You don't pay more by paying monthly...it all evens itself out. Most companies provide a DD discount.
The water company can't tell your habits unless your particular one is ahead of the game on smart meters...mostly they come out every 6 months and read your meter providing you with a bill of what you've used.
Everyone who thinks they're paying too high on a meter- if you're physically able, do the check I've suggested. It's what your water company will tell you to do anyway and will save you a phone call. The average usage for 3 people is 120m3 a year.
Also most water company websites will have a usage calculator to fill in. This will give you a better idea of what impact your actual usage has on a bill.

DancingintheSpoonlight · 06/02/2019 09:37

Dolores If you claim any means tested benefit and get a letter from your GP, there's a fairly good chance you can be put onto a capped tariff which could save you hundreds.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/02/2019 09:40

Crikey! Not metered, £147.50 a year or £12/month.

Severn Trent are, and I quote ...super proud to say that we have the lowest combined bill across the whole of Great Britain

Huntawaymama · 06/02/2019 09:43

This is crazy! We pay £20 a quarter! I'm currently wondering how as we have daily showers and my washing machine is on atleast once every day.

bellabasset · 06/02/2019 09:53

Cornwall here so SWW. My bill on rateable value would be around £800 annually. As a widow I now have a meter and my bill is around £180. I shower, use a washing machine, dishwasher.

If you said that with 4 people it quadrupled that would be over £700, but if people used baths daily that would be considerably more. One of my neighbours is on a meter and they only have quick showers. The rest of my neighbours pay on rateable value.

I changed to a meter several years ago when the bill exceeded £550 annually.

PettyContractor · 06/02/2019 09:54

I have a meter, which I read myself and supply readings to Thames water. I have a spreadsheet where I track my exact usage. Every single year Thames Water try to put my direct debit up by a huge amount, based on their "estimate" of my future usage, and every year I have to phone them and tell them to put it back to what it should be.

My estimates of what I should pay are 98% accurate, their's are out by something like 40%, in their favour.

I don't know how the fuck their computer estimates future water bills, but apparently using the actual meter readings of my past usage has nothing to do with it.

I suspect they don't actually make any calculation at all, they just try to charge me what they would charge if I didn't have a meter.
