So, for context. I work in an admin office, in a school...

... my boss' wife has swine flu... he is poorly himself (cough/sniffles etc...so probably has swine flu as well - came in yesterday... and he wants to come into the office as he's "fine"... I've said that's ridiculous, we have kids here, pregnant people... and ME all of which, could catch this, he still says he's coming into work...

...would IBU to go to his line manger and tell tales?

Perfectly possible to get a mild case of swine flu (or any other flu). Of course, anyone who catches it from you may not be so lucky.

Then again, lots of people with flu do carry on because they think they just have a cold. I think you can only go by how you feel.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/02/2019 13:24

I doubt he has any type of flu at all if he can even lift his head off the pillow

Belenus · 05/02/2019 13:27

You can have a mild case of flu. If you've had flu in the past, subsequent bouts of similar strains are likely to be mild. if you think about it, it's how inoculation works.

wife is diagnosed with swine flu... boss is type to drag his body into work even if he was on his last legs... he was rough yesterday, coughing and sniffling and sore throats and all that... so i would be fairly confident he had something contagious...

wife was seen by doctor who prescribed antibitoics

Why is a doctor prescribing antibiotics for a virus?

Quartz2208 · 05/02/2019 15:46

What do you expect his line manager to do - honestly I would imagine nothing

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 05/02/2019 15:49

Don't you normally get antivirals like Tamiflu for swine flu? Surely antibiotics would be useless?

donajimena · 05/02/2019 15:55

Antibiotics?

Quartz2208 · 05/02/2019 15:55

Unless the swine flu has lead to a secondary bacterial infection antibiotics would be useless

Omgineedanamechange · 05/02/2019 15:57

Antibiotics???? Not swine flu then.

ThanksItHasPockets · 05/02/2019 15:59

No. Antibiotics don’t treat viruses.

MargoLovebutter · 05/02/2019 16:04

Flu is a virus and cannot be treated with antibiotics.

Bringbackthestripes · 05/02/2019 16:16

I know someone who had (diagnosed) swine flu in the outbreak a few years ago; she didn't even know, was still going to school, only felt slightly under the weather, but went to be tested because everyone did.

Similar story here. One of DC school friends was positive for swine flu. Shortly after, myself and DC and were quite unwell, but DH was then hospitalised which was how we were tested and found out we didn’t just have a stinking cold.

marmitegirl01 · 05/02/2019 16:16

OP works in a school. Am sure 50% of cohort have cough/ cold/ flu at any given time anyway 🤷‍♀️

twattymctwatterson · 05/02/2019 16:26

I had a "mild" case of swine flu about 10 years ago when we had the big outbreak. The dr didn't think it was bad enough for Tamiflu and said it'd probably make me feel worse. I literally wanted to die for a fortnight, it was the most horrendous experience I've ever had. He wouldn't be able to work with swine flu.

IAmWonderWoman · 05/02/2019 16:28

You don’t get antibiotics for swine flu.

KillITWithFire · 05/02/2019 16:54

Oh... well maybe she doesn't have swine flue then? I wonder what it is...

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 05/02/2019 16:56

But you can’t expect him to stay away from work because his wife is ill. Confused

ThanksItHasPockets · 05/02/2019 16:58

Aren’t you glad you didn’t go to his boss?

MargoLovebutter · 05/02/2019 16:59

Oh... well maybe she doesn't have swine flue then? I wonder what it is... which is exactly why you don't go to the boss of the boss because you don't have all the facts and you will end up looking like a speculating trouble maker.
