Your experience of metronidazole

Prescribed it on sat for a dental infection and I feel totally exhausted today. Also keep feeling a bit dizzy when I stand up for too long.

Planning to get in touch with the dentist in the morning to see if I can change antibiotics but not sure if I can do anything else?

Is it normal to feel totally washed out? Last time I felt like this I'd had the flu. Its worrying me a bit but have health anxiety anyway so I'm not sure if I'm freaking out over nothing!

Thanks!

Yes it's a nasty antibiotic. I had a horrid taste in my mouth, ringing in my ears and generally feeling like I'd been hit by a train.

It's usually the first a/b of choice for dental infections though.

Designerenvy · 04/02/2019 19:09

Yeah, was on it a few months ago for dental infection. Slept around the clock. Felt awful on it .

QuestionableMouse · 04/02/2019 19:10

Okay that make me feel a bit better. I read the side effects and have scared myself silly 😕

It's rank but effective!

Made me feel like shite. But it worked and very quickly, infection a lot better in under 24 hours. I'd say continue with it now so your bug doesn't become resistant to them.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 04/02/2019 19:11

Yes I have had this too. Made me feel really sick.

NamelessEnsign · 04/02/2019 19:15

Last time I had it, I’d had a wisdom tooth extraction. I developed an allergy to (some) ABs and spent the first 24 hours after the surgery vomiting uncontrollably. So that was fun! My surgeon told me to stop taking them in the end.

I hope you feel better soon OP.

user1496259972 · 04/02/2019 19:17

Had a horrendous allergic reaction to this when prescribed it after having a wisdom tooth out. I was unable to get off the floor I felt so dreadful and struggling to breath properly.

ethelfleda · 04/02/2019 19:18

Yep. They’re awful - made me feel incredibly nauseous and generally unwell. And presumably you know about the ‘not one drop of alcohol to be consumed’ part?
I would carry on taking them though - they will get rid of the infection and I doubt your dentist will want to switch you on to a different one now.

Teddyreddy · 04/02/2019 19:20

I had it post birth, it definitely made me feel ill. Also, you really really don't want to have anything with any alcohol in it while you're on it, DH had got as far as pouring me the post birth glass of sparkly before we looked it up and realised it would make me feel really really ill....

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 04/02/2019 19:20

I've only ever had it intravenously and it affected my eyesight, thankfully only temporarily. I would never, ever take it again. My last dentist said she would still prescribe it if I needed antibiotics as I'm not actually allergic so I told my new dentist I have an allergy.

MeetMeInMontauk · 04/02/2019 19:22

My dentist took great theatrical delight in prescribing me metronidazole a few years back for a wisdom tooth infection prior to ultimately getting them removed. I think he was most disappointed when I reported back a week later to inform him that I had suffered no side effects whatsoever. Just the genetic luck of the draw, I guess.

Notgotajarofglue · 04/02/2019 19:22

Turned me into a raving psycho

troubleswillbeoutofsight · 04/02/2019 19:23

Had a course a few weeks ago for dental abscess. No side effects whatsoever and worked very quickly

fuckweasel · 04/02/2019 19:24

I managed two doses when I had cholecystitis. Threw up so violently I wet myself. I subsequently had to wear a red wrist band when I eventually had surgery to warn doctors not to give me it again! Evil stuff.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 04/02/2019 19:27

I was given it for pancreatitis caused by gallstones fuckweasel. The medical staff wouldn't believe my eyesight had been affected, apparently it was nothing to do with the metronidazole, it was because I was upset! Yes, I was upset because I couldn't see properly! My lovely GP was the only person who believed me.

NannyR · 04/02/2019 19:27

I've had it twice (dental abscess and quinsy) and I haven't had any side effects at all - I feel pretty lucky after reading some of these horror stories.

whiteroseredrose · 04/02/2019 19:27

I didn't feel too bad on it day to day but with a tiny drop of alcohol.... Omg I felt like I would die!

EthelHornsby · 04/02/2019 19:29

I’ve had it for a dental abscess felt really sick, with a metallic taste in my mouth, but it got rid of the abscess. DEFINITELY do not mix it with alcohol, though

QuestionableMouse · 04/02/2019 19:29

I don't drink full stop so that's not a problem. Just so damn tired and wiped out constantly.

I had this for a dental infection years ago. I ended up having a full blown panic attack and begged my Mum to phone me an ambulance. She didn't, but I couldn't finish the course of tablets.

Howvery · 04/02/2019 19:33

It is a horrible antibiotic (I say this as a nurse and someone who had to take it after being bitten by a cat) however it is very effective and particularly so in dental use. Unless you are having severe side effects or allergy reactions (full rash, swelling, effecting breathing etc) then keep up with the course and you will soon be feeling much better. The first two days on it are the worst!

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 04/02/2019 19:33

And presumably you know about the ‘not one drop of alcohol to be consumed’ part?
I was prescribed this for an awful gallbladder infection once. It worked brilliantly and quickly and luckily for me with no side effects. But I was prescribed it a week before Christmas and the GP didn’t mention the alcohol thing! Fortunately I always read the insert in detail on any medication or else I could have been in trouble.

LittleCandle · 04/02/2019 19:34

I was once given a megadose of several tablets in one go instead of several days worth. Luckily, I waited until after work to take it, because I have never been so ill in my life. And it didn't sort out my problem, so I had to go back to the GP and get more, but this time in the usual manner. I hate them, as they make me queasy and leave me with a vicious taste in my mouth and indigestion.

LakieLady · 04/02/2019 19:37

It makes me vomit, and feel like shit. Which is possibly worse than the other way round.

SubparOwl · 04/02/2019 19:44

I had an unforgettable experience with this in Ghana as a naïve student.

No doctor available, typo in the Lonely Planet led to me taking TEN TIMES the correct dose. I was pissing blood for days.

Possibly not what you were asking OP.

On the plus side, it cleared up my problem VERY handily. Grin
