Your experience of metronidazole

Prescribed it on sat for a dental infection and I feel totally exhausted today. Also keep feeling a bit dizzy when I stand up for too long.

Planning to get in touch with the dentist in the morning to see if I can change antibiotics but not sure if I can do anything else?

Is it normal to feel totally washed out? Last time I felt like this I'd had the flu. Its worrying me a bit but have health anxiety anyway so I'm not sure if I'm freaking out over nothing!

Thanks!

It gave me terrible stomach cramp.

Absolutely never ever have alcohol with it.

donajimena · 04/02/2019 22:53

I have had a few courses. On one occasion it turned my tongue black but since that time no ill effects. I also used to drink too much in my youth and managed to drink on them quite happily too Blush don't try it though people. I was probably lucky.

FiveRedBricks · 04/02/2019 22:54

Flagyl. Awful bastard of an antibiotic. Does it taste like youre chewing a penny yet?

LonelyAmongUs · 04/02/2019 22:58

Gives me the absolute shits.

Mother87 · 04/02/2019 22:58

Another one here... vile but effective... felt like death-warmed-up when taking it... just felt generally 'disgusting'... nicknamed Metro-Dies-In-Hell - but the tooth infection would NOT go after a month and only this antibiotic shifted it... necessary evil...Confused

megletthesecond · 04/02/2019 23:01

Horrible stuff.
I had to take it after a bowel op a year ago. I was nauseous, dizzy and tearful and it was a struggle looking after the dc's for a week or so. Took a while to get it out of my system.
If it hadn't of been so essential (didn't want another bowel op) I'd have finished it early.

Mother87 · 04/02/2019 23:04

Sorry fuckweasel - when i read your post, I thought you meant you had to wear a red wristband because you wet yourselfGrinGrin

megletthesecond · 04/02/2019 23:04

Oh, and it may have been a coincidence but I also ended up with horrendous thrush for the first time in my life.
All I did was go to medical appointments last winter.

hatethinkingofusernames · 04/02/2019 23:06

It is strong but the best for dental problems. Make sure you take it on a full stomach because that can make you feel awful if you don't eat with it and absolutely no alcohol

Twiggywinkle13 · 04/02/2019 23:07

I am actually in a way glad to hear others have had such issues with this. I had to take a course last year for a nasty skin infection. I thought I was having some sort of breakdown. I was hysterically crying (I never ever cry) I was on holiday at the time, adamant that I was coming home, couldn’t stop crying it was honestly awful.

Aqua25 · 04/02/2019 23:16

Awful antibiotic! After a misscairrage i was given Metronidozle and flucoxcillin, i felt so so sick, i suffered bad hallucinations from Metronidozle, i refuse to take that again so its been added to my allergen list

CaptainCabinets · 04/02/2019 23:22

It’s one of the only antibiotics that doesn’t have any side effects for me Shock lucky really because I have to take it around every 4-6 weeks for a recurring issue Sad

QuestionableMouse · 04/02/2019 23:27

Yep, metallic taste in my mouth but I can cope with that. It's the horrible exhaustion and vague dizziness I can't deal with. Also the fucking anxiety... I feel like I'm losing my mind.

No side effects, I was prescribed this antibiotics for tooth infection.
The toothache was horrendous and the first antibiotics prescribed didn't help me. Eventually the dentist prescribed metronidazole that helped a lot. It's a very effective antibiotic for dental abscess.
If it's just dizziness and nausea than perhaps you could carry on (depends how bad you feel.).
For me getting rid of the toothache was a priority as I couldn't take it, I was in pain 24/7 for many days and my face was swollen. Nothing compares to bad toothache.

QuestionableMouse · 05/02/2019 00:19

I don't feel sick at all, just dizzy and exhausted (and stupidly anxious).

Like I need to go to the loo but the thought of walking down the stairs is making me feel like I want to cry. It's freaking me out because I literally feel like I'm going to fall over.

I was on this and (I think) cephalexin after my hysterectomy and I'm convinced one or both of them contributed to triggering the worst episode of anxiety and mental distress I've ever experienced in my life.

There were other factors at play obviously but I would be very wary of taking either again unless there was no other option. Thankfully I am fine with penicillin so opted for that when I had a dental infection.

Pretty sure I've had metronidazole in the past with no ill effects though, maybe being younger and in more robust health in general helped.

Both my adult sons have had it and been completely fine.

brittabot · 05/02/2019 00:33

I’m allergic to penicillin so have had it quite a few times. Has been OK apart from when I ignored the no alcohol advice aged 18 - was vomiting bile for a day.

ChasedByBees · 05/02/2019 00:33

I take t regularly (ish) and I’ve always been absolutely fine on it.

Magicstar1 · 05/02/2019 00:44

Hopefully the doctor can give you something else instead.

The worst part for me was that it turned out I never had an abscess, so didn’t need the Flagyl....the GP’s locum misdiagnosed me - the dentist was baffled.

Magicstar1 · 05/02/2019 00:46

I meant to say, it’s good that you know what’s causing the anxiety...that it’s just due to the medication. Can you try to tell yourself what it is, and calm down?

ethelfleda · 05/02/2019 09:07

OP - do you use mouthwash with alcohol in or anything like that? Because I’ve read that even that can mess with this drug and cause you to feel ill.

QuestionableMouse · 05/02/2019 09:12

Nope, nothing like that.

I accidentally missed a dose last night (fell asleep) and haven't taken any yet today and I already feel so much better.

JingleJake · 05/02/2019 09:16

I had it and couldn’t believe the side effects. Felt spaced out, dizzy, depressed, generally unwell and sick!

MinesaPinot · 05/02/2019 09:31

I've had it for dental infections (I'm allergic to penicillin).

Thankfully I've never had any side effects, although it was forceably drummed into me by the dentist about NO ALCOHOL (and yes, I did mean the capital letters...)

Also, thankfully, I've never had any ill effects when I have drunk alcohol as soon as I've finished my course either, although to be fair I have always left it a clear 24 hours following my last tablet before I've had a drink.

pumpastrotter · 05/02/2019 09:54

I...erm....shat myself at work after one day of taking them. I was awfully sick and dizzy, had the sweats, all that good stuff. I was given them for a tooth infection and only lasted 24 hours on them.
