Cleaning out my bedroom. Although I've thoroughly cleaned and dusted it, the room is still missing that fresh smell. I'm washing all the fabrics and have had the window open for 4 hours+. aibu to ask your top tips to freshen the smell in bedrooms.

I use a plug in vanilla air freshener, I love it. It seems to work as everyone mentions how nice it smells. You can set it at different strengths too. I have mine on the lowest because I get migraines if it's too strong but you still smell it without it being overpowering.

RabbityMcRabbit · 04/02/2019 13:25

Incense sticks. You can get them cheaply on Amazon and are ideal because they are pet-friendly and environmentally-friendly (neither of which sadly applies to plug-ins)

LuckyLou7 · 04/02/2019 13:27

Clean cotton scented candles work for me. Not overly perfumed nor sweet, just fresh.

essex42 · 04/02/2019 13:28

Good quality plug ins. Love them! I also use incense and scented candles but plus ins give a better background scent. People often say how lovely the house smells as they come in the hall. Opening the window and "airing" the room - as you do - is also important.

badlydrawnperson · 04/02/2019 13:28

Open the window.

Air "fresheners" are just adding a smell generated in a chemical factory to whatever's already there - horrible.

00100001 · 04/02/2019 13:31

We open the window every morning, no matter the weather.
Also "air" the bed by pulling back covers every day. And remake the bed in the afternoon/evening/just before bed.

WordsAndWorlds · 04/02/2019 13:32

Zoflora!! Love it :)

Do a load of washing using a nice fabric conditioner, then hang it to dry above the radiators while they're on.

I love coming home to the house smelling of Lenor Fresh Meadow.

livingthegoodlife · 04/02/2019 13:34

Open windows, clean bedding, dusting - you're already doing everything!

Wash windows? Dust the radiator.

DaedricLordSlayer · 04/02/2019 13:34

shake n vac, it takes the stale smell out of the carpet. my favourite it the lemon one.

AmoraObscura · 04/02/2019 13:34

Essential oils

PickAChew · 04/02/2019 13:35

Bicarb freshens up a carpet, nicely.

cutthegraa · 04/02/2019 13:37

Open the windows every day.

Maybe try sprinkling bicarbonate of soda on the carpet, leave for a while and then hoover up.

All those plug in things or febreeze just artificially mask smells rather than actually eradicating the smell.

Make sure your window vents are open too

Raffleeight · 04/02/2019 13:37

ambi pur 3volution - you can get some lovely scents and they alternate so you don't get used to it. My favourite is thai orchid but you can also get ones such as cotton fresh, blossom, lavender, vanilla etc.

LadyKalila · 04/02/2019 13:43

Regularly open windows, need to do it every day

caperplips · 04/02/2019 13:45

I think making sure that there is no musty old clothing lying around, washing all bedding, bedspreads, pillow cases, cushion covers, throws etc regularly. Keeping is as dust free as you can and opening windows.
I am also fond of fresh flowers and nice, good quality scented candles, even unlit they give off a great scent.

JennyHolzersGhost · 04/02/2019 13:47

Air the room and air the bed every morning, vacuum the carpets, sprinkle some lavender essential oil, wash the dirty laundry.

JustThePerson · 04/02/2019 13:48

I really like shake n vac! Grin

I have to second opening the windows every day though. It does make a difference.

thecatsthecats · 04/02/2019 13:48

My routine is:

  • Air the house the day before the cleaner
  • Cleaner adds all sorts of lovely clean smells
  • Air again at the weekend
  • Use scented candles until the day before the cleaner
KatherinaMinola · 04/02/2019 13:49

Track down the source of the smell. There'll be something musting up the room - old laundry basket? Mould/mildew? Sweat-stained clothing, or just too much clothing hanging close together in a wardrobe. Old carpet that needs to go?

Dry bedding outside if possible. Open windows daily.

Try to empty drawers and clean them out occasionally (easier said than done, I know...).

SandAndSea · 04/02/2019 13:49

I would stay clear of any chemical or artificial products. Maybe try a few things, eg:

Wash bedding regularly.

Sprinkle bicarb around, leave it for a bit and then vacuum up.

Put some essential oil onto a cotton wool ball into your vacuum cleaner. It will scent the room.

Launder curtains, throws, rugs, bedding etc.

Make sure everything is properly dry before you put it back.

Vacuum and air the mattress.

Clean out cupboards and drawers - air them well.

Beebumble2 · 04/02/2019 13:57

Despite a rigorous cleaning regime, I had a similar problem, until I threw out and replaced my pillows. They were not that old, but had obviously absorbed more than I knew!

Lucisky · 04/02/2019 13:58

Stale smells are usually sitting in the fabrics, especially if you are still getting a pong after cleaning/opening windows etc. Clean bedding, wash curtains if you have them, and consider shampooing the carpet as well. I find sleeping with a window cracked open also prevents that stale morning smell.
PersonallyI don't like plug ins and the like, I would rather my house smelt of nothing!

SandAndSea · 04/02/2019 14:04

Thought of another one: check the furniture. I had a mouldy cupboard which really affected the smell of the whole room. It made a big difference getting rid of it. (BTW, not everyone can smell it.)
